I'm 33 and it seems a tad harsh
I know there are much worse things but AIBU to really really not want to wear sensible shoes for the rest of my life?

HecateTrivia · 29/05/2012 19:35

ouch. poor you. they're quite painful, aren't they.

My mum's got them - from years of forcing her feet into ridiculous shoes! now her feet are wrecked. Bunions, corns and hammer toes.

MrAliTheCat · 29/05/2012 19:36

I'm 29 and have had a bunion on my right foot since I was 21. I used to work in retail and was on my feet all day every day, thats the only thing I can think of which may have caused them. I agree, it sucks! My feet are so ugly the only thing I can do is come to terms with them and get over it slips on granny shufflers :D

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:37

Yep I have corns and hammer toes too (although I was born with the hammer toes) Thanks for the sympathy. This year has been a long list of (minor)health issues, and it's like I just aged 10 yrs overnight. I'm finding it quite unsettling.

Google Charcot Marie Tooth and be happy your feet don't look like mine Sad

I have heard bunions are very painful so I do feel for you

MrAliTheCat · 29/05/2012 19:41

Shit always hits all at once, you have my sympathy! Keep on the bright side :)

BlueEyedPeas · 29/05/2012 19:43

I had bunions for as long as I can remember, not due to wearing bad shoes. I had them both removed when I was 27, very, very painful. I then had to go back about 3 years later to have the pins removed. Still can't wear nice shoes :(

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:44

Oh teacakes that's awful. You poor love! My bunions are firmly in perspective.

OP posts:
Iggly · 29/05/2012 19:45

I got one from a pair of shoes from next. Fuckers.

So I started massaging it and doing some toe exercises which seemed to have made it less painful (the bunion sprung about 7 years ago). read this
I now only wear decent shoes, rarely wear heels et. I don't want surgery!

McHappyPants2012 · 29/05/2012 19:45

can you ask your GP for a referal to a podiatrist

SpottyTeacakes · 29/05/2012 19:46

It's ok in used to it Smile at least I can walk and I always got to wear trainers at school Grin

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:46

Oh gosh Blue I can imagine the surgery is painful. My mum had her hammer toes straightened when she was a kid and they broke them but reset them wonky. I guess I've just taken my feet for granted.

BatmanLovesRobin · 29/05/2012 19:48

Also 33, with bunions and corns. What really bites is I don't wear silly shoes Sad
My nanny (as in grandmother!) has them and she's never worn heels, so I'm blaming a shallow gene pool on her side Grin

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:48

Happypants I think you self refer for podiatry so I shall trot along to Gateway (no pun intended)
Iggly Thanks for that link. I also don't want surgery so will be doing tose exercises religiously - thank you.

amillionyears · 29/05/2012 19:48

I always change pairs of shoes three times a day,to keep feet healthy.
Else I get rubs, itcy feet etc.
Worked up to now,I am a fair bit older than the op.

ithastobeNAICEham · 29/05/2012 19:48

I'm 27 and I've had them since I was about 17, for many a year they weren't painful unless I was in stupidly high heels, now they really hurt! Even in my flats!!

I can't even have them removed as I'm PG and its an op under general :(

Tbh, I'd rather have to wear sensible shoes for the rest of my life if it meant I no longer have this pain!!

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:49

Hey Batman - yes dodgy feet run in my family too, and whilst I have worn heels, I'd say only once a week.

OP posts:
tyler80 · 29/05/2012 19:50

I always thought bunions were genetic related more than shoe related

Certainly I know a few men with them and I'm pretty sure they're not wearing high heels or pointy shoes Grin

ameliameerkat · 29/05/2012 19:51

I had varicose veins from the age of 17 to 32 when I had them removed! Sometimes we get ailments before our time....

My friend had her bunion operated on and said it wasn't nearly as painful as folk had made out to her.

BBMs · 29/05/2012 19:52

Im 27 and my bunions starter appearing a year ago... Have stopped them growing by only using fitflop shoes, sandals, boots... Anything that has the fitflop cushioning! Tbh, I tried every other product in the market and the only that worked was wearing fitflops all the time...
I used to be so so proud of my beautiful feet :( sniff sniff

BlueEyedPeas · 29/05/2012 19:54

I think it can be either, genetic or bad shoes. I can remeber my brother putting a marble in his sock and taking the rip out of me, I was about 7 at the time so mine is definately genetic (after grandmother I think)

ithastobeNAICEham, I had mine done under local.

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:55

tyler you never know
amelia that's encouraging, thanks
BBMs nooooooooooooo, not fitflops! Tell me I won't have to wear MBTs for the rest of my life?!

OP posts:
BatmanLovesRobin · 29/05/2012 19:56

At least we know we are not the only dodgy-gened sad-feeted people on MN, I suppose madmomma !

madmomma · 29/05/2012 19:57

yes naiceham you are absolutely right. I just haven't come to terms with it yet, and they're not hurting so far.

OP posts:
BBMs · 29/05/2012 19:59

I hated mbts! I have a new pair, that I only wore twice, gathering dust in my wardrobe!
I LOVE fitflops, they have improved a lot looks wise and they are the comfiest shoes ever! I have every color of sandals, boots and shoes lol
There's another brand(much more expensive) called earth shoes that does fab shoes and you wouldn't even think they've goy extra padding inside :)

AdoraBell · 29/05/2012 20:02

Well, I had them as a new born baby, and so did my DD.
