to want to lose my baby weight?

kat1885 · 29/05/2012 10:38

This is my first aibu but I am ready for it.

I had ds2 4 weeks ago and yesterday I started using my fitness pal which puts my daily calories to lose 1lb per week at 1400 ish. I am not bf due to ds poor suck reflex.

Yesterday I did really well and stayed within my allowance, however I made the mistake of not having carbs with my dinner so was really hungry. I won't do that again in a hurry and had a Muller rice to tie me over until morning (still within allowance).

I have been discussing with friends and dh and they are all concerned its too soon after having ds2 and that I shouldn't have reduced my calorie intake so dramatically. The only reason it is so dramatic is due to.me cutting out all crap (i was a chocoholic).

Background - I'm 5'7 currently weigh 11st 12 and would like to get to 9st 7 and keep it off. I will start to properly exercise after my 6 week check and adjust my calorie intake accordingly. I have had issues with my weight before which could be why they're worried but I am clearly not currently a healthy weight (or size) for my height and build.

Please let me know if I am bu and I will rethink.

I'd speak to a health professional befor emaking drastic cuts in the number of calories you are eating. Remember that you need energy even if you are not breastfeeding, and it is very early days.

onetiredmummy · 29/05/2012 10:53

Its not unreasonable no, but probably a bit soon to be worrying over it. Your baby needs your focus now & if you miss out carbs etc you'll have less energy at a time when you need all you can get :)

Leave it a couple more weeks til its 6 weeks as your body will have recovered a little more. I understand not being happy with your weight post childbirth but really you have more important things to think about at the min, no offence :)

kat1885 · 29/05/2012 11:05

Its not consuming me iykwim but if more people think 6 weeks is better will rethink and do more then.

Just cut out as much crap as you can and drink lots of water.

Exercise if you're up to it and walk rather than taking the car/bus.

If you do that, I don't really think it will matter whether you wait for the 6wk check up or not.

kat1885 · 29/05/2012 11:17

WL - that's basically what I've done. This is why I'm asking here. Will keep an eye and go with the majority lol.

It's not really though is it?

You say you've reduced your calorie intake dramatically.

Unless you were eating all manner of shite when you were pregnant, it sounds as though you're doing more than just cutting out the crap and drinking water etc?

Hi kat, I am your exact measurements (5ft 7, same weight as you!) and I have a 2-month old baby, and have just started doing the Shred DVD yesterday. It's a hard workout!! I didn't push myself as hard as I could have, because I don't want to hurt my lower back/knee. but it's a start! I have been walking 30mins most days since DS was 2weeks old (had no choice, doing school run with fifteen ton double buggy too) [grin} and just generally tightening stomach/pelvic floor whenever I remember and keeping active, trying to improve my posture from post preg slouching etc.

So I would recommend starting slowly, and after 6-8wks picking it up in pace if you wish. No point in killing yourself to get fit at what is a very early post-pregnancy stage, I think allowing a year to get back in shape is wise because it lets you do it slowly and it took you 9months to grow a baby, takes a while to get trim again too Smile

Echo another posters wise advice about cutting out sugary/fattening junk food, and drinking water etc. BUT I always allow myself a few moderate treats a week, otherwise I'd find it dull and relentless.

I'm looking into starting the NHS couch-to 5k running thing, google it, looks achievable Smile

Tiddlyompompom · 29/05/2012 11:28

What Worra said.

I do think it's a bit daft to be actually dieting at 4wks pp as your body's still adjusting, but there's certainly no harm in sticking to a healthy diet and saying no to crappy snacks.
Some people do think that you being pregnant/having a newborn gives them a licence to shove cake down your throat, and take great offence if you say no.

If I were you I'd leave the calorie counting off for a few weeks, but stick to your guns re sugary/fatty snacks - you'll prob see an improvement just with that, then when you start up again you'll have a head start!

TwoPeasOnePod · 29/05/2012 11:29

oh, and on myfitnesspal it suggested I stick to 1560 cals a day to lose weight, bearing in mind I'm same measurements as you I reckon 1400 cals is too low, you need to help your body recover after all, aim for being strong/active rather than concentrating fully on calories, in my own experience when I've tried 'too hard' I've given up or been disappointed, be good to yourself Smile

bobbledunk · 29/05/2012 13:00

Don't starve yourself, if you need a bit of extra carbs, eat them, just avoid junk and whatever you do ignore people who try to sabotage you. For some reason certain people want everybody around them to be fat and feel uncomfortable with others taking control of their lives and being healthy.

Weight gain can be very depressing as well as unhealthy so I think you're being very sensible to deal with it now before it becomes an issue. Focus on being as healthy and when you're ready, as active as possible. It will keep your mood up and give you confidence so you can feel good and enjoy your baby.

BambieO · 29/05/2012 13:04

I definitey do not think YABU. I am 27 weeks pregnant and am sick to the back teeth of people telling me off for actually daring to be careful with what I eat. I am not on a diet as such but am definitely making a conscious effort to only have healthy snacks on a regular basis as oppose to the cakes, crisps etc people seem to think I have a licence to eat now!

Don't get me wrong I do have a bit of whatever I fancy on weekends etc but just not every single day. As long as I have my three balanced meals a day and some helathy snacks throughout I am sure my baby is just fine and probably getting more than enough nutrients etc from my diet.

I will be doing the same as you once the baby arrives and cutting down in a healthy manner.

Not wanting to be uncomfortable in yourself is hardly cause for concern as long as you feel fit and well. Only you know your body and how you feel eating certain amounts, you will soon know if it is too little.

BambieO · 29/05/2012 13:05

well said Bobbledunk!
