you probably shouldn't set up a sprinkler for your approx 30x50 ft garden at 7am, and then leave it on all fricking day?

bloody neighbours Angry

other neighbours were pressure washing their huge patio the other day, and have sprinklers on for half an hour every morning. Hmm

and people wonder why we're in a drought in the SE...

Personally I'd report them.

MarysBeard · 28/05/2012 14:50

Sprinklers are also banned. Report.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/05/2012 14:50

Phone the water company then.

sereneswan · 28/05/2012 14:52

Report them. With a bit of luck they'll get a thousand pound fine.

Yes the water companies lose a third of the water and pay themselves silly amounts and then expect us to pick up the pieces but the fact remains we're short of water and the rules apply to everyone. How would they like it if everyone left sprinklers on like themand then things got so bad we have standpipes? Hate people like that.

Australia have a great system. hose pipe ban in the winter, spring and autumn you are allowed to use you sprinklers once a week( twice if you have a bore) and in the summer 2 times a week( 3 if you have a bore) you can use it for 15 mins in front garden and 15 mins in back garden. The day you are allowed to water your garden is done by the last number of your house. Ie I live at number 25. All fives can water Wednesday, (bore day Friday) and Sundays. Yes we have a shortage of water but this is a fairer system. The rangers in are area are also very good at fining people who water their gardens o the wrong day or for 2 long

Kveta · 28/05/2012 14:53

I have emailed water company, but no reply, so who knows. (no phone number to report to)

just annoying me as I've been hauling a watering can (filled from the water butt) up and down the garden at 38 weeks pg, and letting the lawn suffer, whilst neighbours ignore the ban.

just seems a bit twattish of them and I wanted to whinge :o

If you come under Southern Water then you need to ring:

0845 278 0845

ShatnersBassoon · 28/05/2012 14:56

Find a customer services phone number and get them to connect you to the right department. If your neighbour is keeping the sprinkler on all day, the water company will want to stop them asap.

Lexie1970 · 28/05/2012 14:59

Several companies relaxed their hosepipe ban a couple of weeks ago - maybe you should check before you go in with all guns a blazin' :)

JamInMyWellies · 28/05/2012 15:00

How irritating, we are in a hosepipe ban and I have been using a watering can to water my allotment and have deliberately cut down on the amount of plants I have this summer. I too have a neighbour who every evening waters her veg patch with the hosepipe. Angry

Kveta · 28/05/2012 15:00

we're veolia central I think. have sent the email, and will be calling once I work out what house number the sprinkler garden is (it's a new house that we diagonally back on to, and the walk to find out the house no. would finish me off just now!!)

veolia do specifically say to email rather than call.

feels so petty to report it though!!

We have a hosepipe ban but are allowed to use ours for next 28 days as we've had turf laid in our garden (new build) and the house builder has a license which allows us to water it. I double checked with the water board and they confirmed it was fine and just logged it ago at our address incase anyone reports us.

naturalbaby · 28/05/2012 15:04

They'll burn the grass if it's being watered in the midday sun.

Kveta · 28/05/2012 15:07

maybe that's it Jo? but still, it's been going for 7 hours now. they'll wash the ruddy garden down the hill at this rate!

YABU to report something like this. Snitching=Wrong unless you got shooting, stabbing, child abuse/neglect or something.

Who'd grass over a sprinkler? Not like you're gonna send anyone to prison.

wasabipeanut · 28/05/2012 15:09

This sort of thing pisses me off. We filled the (small) paddling pool with a hosepipe and have reused that water for watering veg. We felt very naughty for doing it but seeing as we have 2 water butts, water saving devices in loos, shower not bath etc. and are generally water conscious we figured we were doing our bit.

Sprinklers on for hours at a time just seems like contempt really.

iloveberries · 28/05/2012 15:10

i would report them too. twats

Milliways · 28/05/2012 15:33

We reported a burst water main in our road yesterday lunchtime, they said had already been reported and would be out later. 7.30pm was still gushing. Also, went past a huge geyser burst in the next town which at least they were working on.

Makes me mad to see so much water flowing away when we can't use a hosepipe to clean the cars etc (and research shows people use less with a hose than with loads of buckets thrown over cars).

Pekka · 28/05/2012 15:44

I thought hose pipe ban meant you cannot water your garden, full stop. I would let the water company know about those who break the water pipe ban regularly.

Pixieonthemoor · 28/05/2012 16:01

It is absolutely boiling here and it would be great to fill a paddling pool but the hose pipe ban means we can't (large pool, bad back ergo no lugging of heavy watering cans). Or would love to have the sprinkler on as the LO's love leaping through the spray but, again, not possible. We all have to abide by the rules and do our bit so don't feel a bit bad for reporting them!!

Lambzig · 28/05/2012 16:05

Gosh this makes me really cross. People just dont believe it applies to them - so selfish. We really are close to having standpipes in the street in the south east, and no doubt people will be amazed at that when it happens. Another dry winter and we will be in a complete mess with water, and yet people still think their lawn/swimming pool, car is more important.

eurochick · 28/05/2012 16:20

Are you definitely still in a hosepipe ban area? Most bans were lifted (but I think Thames and a couple of other areas still have a ban in place).

Kveta · 28/05/2012 17:54

def a ban here still, I did check - wouldn't be complaining otherwise!! they finally switched it off as the thunderstorm started...

Good grief - mind your own beeswax! All this snitching business is just horrible. What on earth do you think the water company will actually do apart from possibly send a letter?
