Getting Asked for ID When Buying ALCOHOL FREE BEER!

Right.

Before andyone suggests that the till lady was "just doing her job", I totally understand that she was just doing her job (although she could've been nicer), I understand that she was just doing her job. This is not a moan at checkout staff, but at the morons who imposed this rule.

I am 27 weeks pregnant and the weather is super hot. So, I went out with my husband to do the weekly shop and decided to buy some Becks Blue (as it has to be the best AF beer ever). We got to the checkout and she put through all our shopping (veg, meat, cereal...all good sensible stuff) and then she put through the alcohol free beer (we weren't buying any real alcohol, just the Becks Blue). She looked at DH(24) and asked for ID, I snickered to myself as it was AF beer, she then said "I don't know what you're laughing about, I need to see some for you too". I'm 25. Only problem was that although DH had ID (and passed this age test), I didn't have any on me as I didn't think I would need it FOR BUYING ALCOHOL FREE BEER. Well...she wouldn't let us buy it! Neither would her manager.

Needless to say I was pretty pissed off. Apparently it has 0.01% alcohol in which is why they ask for ID. Of course that makes sense because I'm going to get toatlly hammered on a 6 pack of Becks Blue, aren't I .

Seriously. Who are the nitwits that decided to impose such a stupid rule? I bet they don't ID people when buying aftershave which, most likely, has more alcohol in than 0.01%!

Moan over.

Asking for i.d. for calpol is because it is a paracetamol product. Paracetamol tablets are also age restricted. You have to be over 16 years old and if you look younger you get asked as well.

Crackers and party poppers are over 16 as well due to the small amount of gunpowder in them.

I have worked in an off licence and it is so bloody wearing listening to endless people preaching on about how stupid it is that they need id. Just carry id people and if you want to change the world then spare the poor cashier your tantrums. I am 41 and look very weary and never get ID'd!

McHappyPants2012 · 29/05/2012 19:08

i would be fuming with the calpol one and the cashier would have an earfull, i would be very pissed off that i left my sick child at home to get medication to come home without it and my child suffering longer than needed

SPsFanjoHarboursTRex · 29/05/2012 19:13

McHappy luckily I had my ID on me. I couldn't believe it as I haven't been ID'd for it before.

McHappyPants2012 · 29/05/2012 19:19

i would be the only time i don't carry id, i have been know to go to tesco in my PJ in the early hours to get calpol

misslinnet · 29/05/2012 19:32

I got ID'd once trying to buy a diet coke at a bowling alley.

No amount of arguing could convince the staff member concerned that diet coke is non-alcoholic and perfectly legal to sell to anyone, regardless of age. I was nearly 30 at the time as well.

JeezyPeeps · 29/05/2012 19:40

Shocked at the poor maths on here. FTR, 5 x 0.05 is 0.25.

JeezyPeeps · 29/05/2012 19:41

And now, instead of being shocked, I am embarrassed at the fact I totally misread the sum. Move on, nothing to see here!

SPsFanjoHarboursTRex · 29/05/2012 19:43

jeezy Grin

Been ID'd for duet coke is stupidest thing I've heard! Did the staff member believe it wad alcohol?! Confused

FioFio · 29/05/2012 20:15

I think anyone going into supermarkets in pyjamas should be asked for id anyway
it's juvenille

DeathMetalMum · 29/05/2012 21:18

If you were buying it at the bar in the bowling alley it may have been that the bar has no liscence for under 18's on the premises. (our bowling alley has a mini pub inside that also has a separate entrance) I have worked in pubs that dont have this liscence and have many times had to refuse to serve soft drinks due to no id as it carries the same risk of a fine that I would have to pay. I take my id everywhere I am quite young though. Supermarkets imo are the harshest in regards to id but the end of the day its against the law to serve alcohol to under 18's. Police and trading standards regularly do spot checks in regards to this and quite often send people who are a lot older than they look to try to purchase the alcohol.

McHappyPants2012 · 29/05/2012 21:28

fiofio, wouldn't do it for a normal shop but to get medication asap i couldn't care less what i am wearing at the time.

generally i do have a well stocked first aid box

FioFio · 29/05/2012 21:44

but not wardrobe obviously

TeenageKids · 02/07/2018 14:13

I hope the previous posters see this new message. Well, I had a problem with drinking. Starting with the pregnancies, childbirth, husband always away-time.
But anyway: Becks Blue: noted, sorry to hear this idiotic story.

Today I picked up a big box of 12 bottles (Morrisons £9). I went to self-checkout, expecting someone to maybe come over to say I am old enough (51!).

But that did not happen. The til totalled up, I paid and left the shop with 9 items.

The Becks Blue wasn't on the receipt. It was free !! :-)

Apollo440 · 02/07/2018 14:23

I'd enquire to head office. It might be that they have mis-categorized alcohol free products. It happens. It might of course be policy but it might make them review it. I got asked for ID for buying teaspoons which had obviously been put in the same category as kitchen knives.
