to find charging for a cot a bit annoying?

DH was looking for accommodation, and thought the charge for setting up a cot here was a bit cheeky!

Won't be going there then!

Wouldn't bother me. Cheaper than buying a travel cot.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 28/05/2012 09:50

I think it's fair enough if they are nice cots. They have to cover the cost of maintaining them, extra sheets etc, and they may only have a limited number of cots so they have to be booked somehow. If you want to stay there for other reasons just take your own travel cot.

fatmummy35 · 28/05/2012 09:51

Its a standard price. Most hotels charge £10-15.

ShatnersBassoon · 28/05/2012 09:52

I would expect a charge for hiring an item.

Trills · 28/05/2012 09:53

YAB a bit U to expect to get "extra" things (which need to be bought, maintained, cleaned) and not pay.

PrincessOfWails · 28/05/2012 09:55

But I could take my own cot? That's ok then! (Now my only reason for not staying there is that it's just too expensive!)

YAB a bit U. Presumably the cot has sheets etc that need changing so more work for housekeeping?

My MIL is insisting on hiring a cot for us, for a week in October. We have a perfectly serviceable travel cot that I know DS will sleep in. Personally I think she's BU!

delilahlilah · 28/05/2012 10:05

I would imagine (depending on the age of the baby) it includes breakfast as well. Laundry is a cost to the business, as well as paying the member of staff that puts up / takes down and cleans the cot for each use.

delilahlilah · 28/05/2012 10:08

The prices are pretty much what I expected to be honest. 4* accommodation is unlikely to be any cheaper than that. If you want cheaper, you need to look for a lower rating really, or self catering accommodation.

BobbiFleckman · 28/05/2012 10:12

provided it's a proper cot with a real mattress, it wouldn't bother me. We went to Woolley Grange once - supposedly child friendly / family hotel etc etc. The travel cot they provided was so old and knackered that it sagged away from a central leg which was like a spike in the middle. Even with every towel in the bathroom propping the thing up, it was like a wonky hammock. (we left early)

american78 · 28/05/2012 10:14

Wow that cheap. We stayed in a hotel in Italy and it was 20 euros a night. I was horrified.
The cot was beautiful but I would hope so at that price.

CornishKK · 28/05/2012 10:19

YANBU. We've just booked a place that charges a hire fee for the cot and highchair, £15 each - total rip off.

I say this as someone who runs a holiday let business, we provide a highchair, cot, changing mat and selection of books/toys with no charge. Our cottage is graded as 5 star & I would not consider additional charges for these basics.

CaptainKirk · 28/05/2012 10:44

We've booked a holiday cottage in Northumberland for June and they supply a cot and high chair on request at no extra charge.

lollilou · 28/05/2012 10:51

Yab a bit u although I think that's a bit steep. I guess if it's a proper cot and not a travel one it will need to be set up and have clean bedding and stuff then someone needs to be paid for that.
We went on holiday with our dd when she was little and specified she needed a cot when we got to our apartment, no cot. Poor little thing was exhausted but wouldn't settle in the end we had to build a makeshift bed/cot with cushions suitcases and anything else we could find! Even after asking the rep numerous times we never did get the cot so we would have gladly paid a fee for one.

ceeveebee · 28/05/2012 10:57

I have just been asked to pay £25 per child for a "baby pack" in self catering accomm for my DTs which is a cot and high chair ( the nice man knocked £10 when I questioned this)

Sirzy · 28/05/2012 11:50

Perfectly normal. A cot in the room is normally an extra and you pay for extras.

Paying for one is often much easier than trying to fit a travel cot in the car with everything else!

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 11:54

Pretty normal. We had to pay for a bed for ds is a 5 star beach resort type place owned by an international company so assuming its industry standard when putting more than the usual number of bodies in one room.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 11:57

I think self catering accommodation is quite different to a hotel in terms of what is seen as an essential.

TwllBach · 28/05/2012 12:54

I work in a B and B that is rated as 4* and we don't charge for babies/toddlers under three or for using our cots, but they are only travel cots, not fancy ones

bigjoeent · 28/05/2012 13:00

I've never been charged for a cot or high chair, generally stayed in small child friendly hotels and self catering accomodation. Really surprised at that and I don't think it can be that difficult to put up a travel cot. I bet it won't be a proper cot. YANBU

theodorakis · 28/05/2012 13:05

The room has to be bigger to fit a cot and be within fire regulations.
