Jacket Potato Help Needed!!

Orangeyouabanana · 27/05/2012 18:14

After forgetting to go and get jacket potatoes today for dinner (I was busy in the garden with my wine and a book) i looked and found some jacket potatoes in the cupboard but the use by date was yesterday and they have started sprouting a little

Are they safe to use or am i about to give me and my partner food poisoning?
(if it helps i was planning to put them in the microwave and then oven then)

I usually just cut those bits off and whack them in the microwave. I'm still alive. I think you're not supposed to eat them if they are green, sprouting is OK as long as it's a little, I think.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 27/05/2012 18:16

Yes they'll be absolutely fine, just dig the sprouts out. I always completely ignore use by dates on fresh fruit and veg.

McHappyPants2012 · 27/05/2012 18:18

I wouldn't risk it would dial a Chinese instead :)

BumpingFuglies · 27/05/2012 18:20

They'll be fine, just nick off the sprouting bits. Unless the actual potatoes are green, there's no problem.

AllYoursBabooshka · 27/05/2012 18:21

Of course you won't get food poisoning!

Dig out the sprouts and enjoy. :)

OhNoMyFanjo · 27/05/2012 18:21

Cut those bits off and use, lots of us won't have a choice and haven't snuffed it yet Grin

Rilson · 27/05/2012 18:22

I just knock the sprouting bits off and lob them in the oven for a few hours. You wont get food poisoning :)

Sparks1 · 27/05/2012 18:23

No, microwave them first, then put them into the oven. Wink

picnicbasketcase · 27/05/2012 18:24

Cut all the sprouting bits off, chuck them in oven. Microwaved jacket potatoes are an abomination

McHappyPants2012 · 27/05/2012 18:25

Spark I just thought of the butter advert lurpack

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/05/2012 18:25

Microwave is OK to get them started while the oven heats up but then they need a good long time in the oven so the skins get crunchy - though I'm buggered if my oven would be going on today - it's far too hot!!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/05/2012 18:27

Oh and I have not once, in my entire life, paid any attention to a 'use by' date on fruit or veg - you can see if they are OK or not!! I actually can't believe that things like potatoes have UBD's!!

Orangeyouabanana · 27/05/2012 18:28

The potatoes are in the microwave and then planning to go into the oven to get all crispy on the outside like good potatoes do

Topping is cheese and beans with bacon

Seriously, nuke them in the microwave, then put them into a hot oven so that the edges crisp up. Yum!

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 27/05/2012 18:53

potatoes can be used months after they came out of the ground if stored correctly. we are just using up the last of the pears picked off the tree last september. 8 months on.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 27/05/2012 19:27

I keep reading this title as Jacket Potato Head Needed Confused sigh

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 19:34

I didn't even know potatoes had a use by date.

Cut the sprouty bits off they will be fine

VikingVagine · 27/05/2012 19:36

Trust me, if a potato was off, you'd know about it !

Blacksquirrel · 27/05/2012 19:36

Can you actually get food poisoning from a potato?
I'd have thought even a six month old potato would only taste disgusting but not do you any real harm.
I've never considered following a use by date on fruit & veg.

VikingVagine · 27/05/2012 19:42

Rotten potatoes smell of gone of fish. Fact.

MarySA · 27/05/2012 19:44

I got told not to eat potatoes that had gone a bit green. I never think potatoes that have sprouted taste very nice.

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 20:58

Did you know there's a National Potato Council? Confused
