To feel that having nearly half of your salary taken away is just not right?

I don't earn enough to pay tax & NI but my DH has a pretty good job & salary for which he works BLOODY hard. I was horrified to work out after last pay day that for EVERY £1 he earned, he only kept 60 pence. This is due to a combination of paying very high income tax and NI, as well losing all of his personal allowance because he might get a bonus at the end of the year! It just seems that if you work hard to get paid well and you are a PAYE taxpayer, the Government & HMRC will just shaft you from all angles. It just makes me wonder why we bother? So... AM I BEING UNREASONABLE? Confused

Is this a repeat post because I have the OP before word for word.

HillyWallaby · 27/05/2012 13:13

YABU. I work BLOODY hard. 47 hours a week. DP too he sometimes works 55! And we bring home a total of £25k a year between us.

We still get 'shafted'.

When you say 'bring home' do you mean after all taxes? So 25k net to live on? And is that your salaries alone or do you get anything else on top of that like tax credits or HB?

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 13:14

Sigh tantrums, you just don't get it. No one is saying we should lose the things...please read the link or google the 30% tax proposal yourself.

HillyWallaby · 27/05/2012 13:14

Oh sorry, and I meant to ask what do you mean by 'we still get shafted'?

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 13:15

Cash in hand is tax evasion, isnt it?

Krumbum · 27/05/2012 13:16

Op how much does he earn?

VivaLeBeaver · 27/05/2012 13:17

Its not tax evasion if its declared and tax is paid.

hackmum · 27/05/2012 13:18

I love it when people post in AIBU and then get really angry when people say YABU. If you don't like the answer, you shouldn't ask.

usualsuspect · 27/05/2012 13:19

Meh

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 13:20

"
Not wanting to contribute to a civilized society is as bad benefits fraud. In my opinion."

Who is saying that they don't want to contribute quint?

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 13:23

Also tantrums, read karmas post explaining how it is possible for a HE to end up with very little to spend on food each month (and it has nothing to do with going to the hairdresser/beautician/out for meals every week!)

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 13:23

Isnt that what anybody who is begrudging paying tax is saying?

frankie76 · 27/05/2012 13:23

I'm with you Winnie - makes me sad when I see how much is taken every month

klaxon · 27/05/2012 13:24

We pay 60% in tax OP. Because once you get over a certain income level you lose your personal allowance entirely.

But I don't care because compared to most people we are doing amazingly well. Also, we CAN contribute more so we should.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 27/05/2012 13:24

Short answer Winnie. Because after the huge amounts of tax that you earned working bloody hard, you can afford a roof over your head and food on the table.

My SH works bloody hard and was made redundant last month. Since then he's worked bloody hard at trying to find another job. If he doesn't get one this month there will be no roof and no food. The well-paid don't have a monopoly on working bloody hard Hmm

If you listen closely you'll hear me playing you a tune on the world's tiniest violin.

mirry2 · 27/05/2012 13:26

The problem is that some people equate earnings with working hard. This what annoys the rest of us who also work bloody hard for just as many hours but earn diddly squat in comparison.
We also may be just as well or more qualified that the high earners.

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 13:26

No quint, people aren't begrudging paying ANY tax - they are complaining about how much of their income is going towards tax. There is a difference. Very few people have said they don't want to pay tax AT ALL.

WinnieTheWho · 27/05/2012 13:26

Maybe I should have enititled the thread differently, for example "Is the tax system in this country fair?"
I don't disagree with paying tax FGS!
What I feel is totally unacceptable is that the more money you earn, the greater proportion of it you lose to tax & NI if you are on PAYE.
I'm sure most people would rather pay less tax whatever they earn, but if everyone paid say 20 or 30% (including multimillionares who dodge their stamp duty as well) the surely tax revenues would increase across the board and the Government wouldn't have to penalise those on good but not multimillion pound PAYE salaries.

Is Mn only for left wing people with one belief?

In a word: YES.

It's incredibly left-wing here.

My own view is that there's a vast difference between paying enough taxes to ensure that no one ever has to go without food and paying excessive taxes which go towards totally unnecessary things, including (for example) other people's lifestyle choices which cost money.

mirry2 · 27/05/2012 13:27

simple answer op - just get a lower paid job.

WasabiTillyMinto · 27/05/2012 13:28

ShelleyB a really good post.

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 13:29

Gwendoline, if my DH lost his job we'd be in the same position. I'm pretty sure most people would be - regardless of whether they are HE or not.

I hope your DH finds a job soon btw.

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 13:30

VivaLeBeaver

I said "Tax evasion, or not wanting to pay tax is as much scrounging as any other scrounging."

To which Scuzy replied:

"Quint while I agree with you why do people get a "fair play" when they say do they cash in hand jobs but benefit fraud is met with such distain."

and I replied: "Cash in hand is tax evasion, isnt it?"

Who am I to know if the person is declaring it or not? If they are declaring it, then of course it is tax evasion, but clearly it isnt if they declare it.

I have come across people who are refusing to do a job if I want to pay by cheque, or if I ask for a receipt. In those cases, I am pretty sure they are not declaring it.
And I will not be keen to give them work, as I wont have any refress if something goes wrong. NO warranty.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 27/05/2012 13:31

Winnie, so do you think your DH should pay the same rate of tax as someone who earns 15k?

WinnieTheWho · 27/05/2012 13:32

actually mirry2 you might have a point there Grin
