To feel that having nearly half of your salary taken away is just not right?

I don't earn enough to pay tax & NI but my DH has a pretty good job & salary for which he works BLOODY hard. I was horrified to work out after last pay day that for EVERY £1 he earned, he only kept 60 pence. This is due to a combination of paying very high income tax and NI, as well losing all of his personal allowance because he might get a bonus at the end of the year! It just seems that if you work hard to get paid well and you are a PAYE taxpayer, the Government & HMRC will just shaft you from all angles. It just makes me wonder why we bother? So... AM I BEING UNREASONABLE? Confused

Did Warren say that she claimed benefits? I must've missed that bit Confused

If a flat tax rate is brought in at higher than what we are paying now, we are fucked financially, on the bright side our house will go up for sale, so all of of those who will end up paying less could buy it, charge us exortionate rent and make even more money. Oh, wait, that's already happened to most of the council house stock Hmm And people still wonder why benefits are so high.

We don't claim housing benefit, fwiw. I don't begrudge those that have to at all. Not one bit. Having to rely on benefits is not a nice place to be.

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 15:28

I am a sahm so bllody well yes. No i dont claim cb and if I did I would soon loose it and after all it is only a small rebate towards the ££££££££££ Dh pays in tax.

tinkerbel72 · 27/05/2012 15:28

Oops while the self employed may have legit ways of paying less tax, they also often have less job security. Swings and roundabouts. After all- nothing to stop you starting your own business.

Don't you get CB willyou?

TheUnMember · 27/05/2012 15:29

An example of why the system is so flawed:
I know of someone whose DH works half the year out of the country and as a result does not have to pay income tax. He earns a similar salary to my DH and his family all benefit from the services that this country provides - education, health, policing. It's all legal and he is allowed, by this country's ridiculous tax system to do this.
How in anyone's book can that be considered a fair system?

Because he will be paying tax in the country he is domiciled in. Taxing someone twice on the same earnings would be unfair.

ComposHat · 27/05/2012 15:29

I know what a fucking liberty.

Your husband's salary bring taxed to pay for the schools, hospitals and transport infrastructure that YOU use along with the rest of society.

Plrase don't pull the 'but he works very hard bollocks' people work very hard in minimum wage jobs - but don't receive the over inflated salary your husband 'earns'

tinkerbel72 · 27/05/2012 15:29

Btw that should have been pressure not pressie in post upthread!

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 15:30

Sorry x-post on the CB

But you don't earn an income?

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 15:30

I don't claim CB. catgirl

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 15:32

I don't need to do paid work.

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 15:32

Did you not want your NI contributions protecting?

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 15:32

Whats your point catgirl?

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 15:33

"I don't need to do paid work."

Well that's your choice, but I think calling someone else a scounger is a little rich.

Just saying

tinkerbel72 · 27/05/2012 15:35

'I don't need to do paid work' is the funniest thing on the thread

Anyone who says that (unless they have generated so much income by themself already that they never need to work again - hmm unlikely!) clearly needs OTHER people to be doing paid work so they don't have to!

not going down the sahm do actually work route HTH

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 15:37

Well, as long as there is record high unemployment in this country, and it does not appear to be getting any better, having jobs is a privilege.

What do you suggest the unemployed or those on disability benefit do to feed themselves and their children?

Maybe do like in Spain, build shanty towns for them to move into, when they are kicked out of their homes for non-payment of mortgage or rent.

We can build a camp in the New Forest. Plenty of room.

Personally I think it is a disgusting attitude, sitting there on high horses, with jobs and all, begrudging paying taxes because other people benefit from this....

bumbleymummy · 27/05/2012 15:38

D0oin, you would end up better off. NIC would be scrapped and your personal allowance would increase.

Compos - she is not complaining about paying tax in general, just the proportion.

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 15:38

Yes wilyou that's right I was. You clearly know me well and have read my posts

Also -wasn't implying SAHPs dont do work. My point, was that if Warren was on benefits and bringing up children full time, she is in exactly the same situation as you in that you both rely on a third party for your financial support, so calling her a "scounger" is really out of order and rather ironic.

willyoustillloveme · 27/05/2012 15:40

A third party? Confused You mean my DH, my childrens dad?

catgirl1976 · 27/05/2012 15:41

Yes. A third party - eg someone else, someone other than yourself.

This is starting to veer into SAHM vs WOHM territory....

SauvignonBlanche · 27/05/2012 15:43

bumbley your response to my comment about disposable income was ridiculous. People choose to have a high mortgage by living in a large house or an expensive area.
It is not forced upon them.
