Aside from advertisers desperately looking for a new angle on "buy our stuff please", and local newspapers looking for a new angle on "cute pictures of old people with young children waving flags" Is anyone ACTUALLY bothered about the queen bit?

Days off ar nice, nostalgia never really hurt anyone, street parties are lovely, obviously, but if it was a big party for something else national, would it make any difference?

I'm just a bit skeptical that anyone really cares how long the queen has been queening for. Maybe old people, and the odd royalty obsessive, but not normal people, surely?

I am pleased that halfterm has moved or I would be struggling to write my final essay with dc at home.

But I couldn't care less about the queen's anniversary just as she won't do anything for mine. Hmm

lionsgorawr · 26/05/2012 22:16

I don't really care about it at all (I'm Scottish, what do you expect? lol) I don't agree with the royal family. I'll be too busy celebrating my friends birthday to care about it all.

Noqontrol it would be hilarious watching people make the mental calculations: time spent making cakes/putting up bunting vs dignity or lack thereof in 'keeping calm and carrying on' regardless. Grin

FeministPixie · 26/05/2012 22:45

Urgh, I am wicked pissed off about the Jubilee and the Olympics, all that money being spent when we are in a double-dip recession and cuts are being made to essential services.

I shall start off the day playing "God Save The Queen" by the Sex Pistols.

However, I don't think we should get rid of the monarchy completely because having a constitutional monarchy means we can prosecute the PM for any crimes committed whilst they are in power. And that is the ONLY reason I like living in a constitutional monarchy Vs a republic.

ofuk, I just got on my political high horse AGAIN.

shockers · 26/05/2012 23:00

We live in a small-ish town. The Jubilee celebrations here have more than a whiff of the home-made...

It's lovely Smile.

EmmaNemms · 26/05/2012 23:40

We're out in the country and it's a big thing round here. I'm really looking forward to it, we're having a party on the village green, barbecue, cream teas and beer tent etc. It's a historic occasion.... One of our village schools has had their party and it was lovely, brought a lump to my throat. My 4 year old is very excited too.

lionsgorawr · 27/05/2012 01:00

Unfortunately, yes, she is the Queen of Scotland too! But I don't want to suffer!! :( I shall get drunk and sing Flower of Scotland in protest :D

ravenAK · 27/05/2012 01:06

Ghastly, all of it.

I'm letting it wash over me. Although did briefly think a corgi costume might be fun for dc's 'dress as a member of the royal family' thing at school, given that swastika armbands or zombie Queen Mum would only offend.

lionsgorawr · 27/05/2012 01:17

ravenAK Please please PLEASE do this!

Earthymama · 27/05/2012 01:20

I really don't feel it's relevant to my life at all. The last time I did anything vaguely Royal was Prince of Wales investiture when the bloody school made us line the streets to wave to the stranger who drove past in his Bentley or Rolls. Convinced me then that they are an irrelevance and outside my interest.

I'm dick of the hijacking of national identity by Royalists, can't they have their own flag while those of us who like this country have ours?

I want a rainbow with a Welsh Dragon and Glastonbury Tor rampant on it.

Here in Wales there is much tat in shops, lots of flag-waving T shirt wearing around for the Olympic Torch yesterday .

I am however producing bunting for the first week on June, for DP and I are celebrating our CP Grin

ravenAK · 27/05/2012 01:25

Not sure I can run to £60 each!

corgi

lionsgorawr · 27/05/2012 01:29

Awww :( I say we all have a "Anti-Jubilee" Celebration, just to spite the stuck up old sod. Never understood what she actually does for the country. That maybe due to the fact that I'm fairly young (Well, I like to still think that 22 is fairly young) and never got taught anything about her in school (Possibly a Scottish thing?)

ravenAK · 27/05/2012 01:42

I didn't either, & I'm 41 & remember having to wear red, white & blue for the Silver Jubilee (which my parents weren't especially happy about, as I recall).

I bear her no personal illwill at all, although I'm a republican & would retire the lot of 'em, pronto.

To be honest, I just think we don't have much, as a country, to get the bunting out for at the moment.

More important things to get wound up about, but I'm certainly not buying into it.

Latara · 27/05/2012 05:17

I would celebrate... The Queen may seem like a harmless old Granny but isn't she still the official C-in-C of the Armed Forces? & she DID look very pissed orf after David Cameron gave her 'the shortest ever Queen's Speech' @ the Opening of Parliament...
She may decide to actually use her Parliament-Dissolving powers - then after allowing Philip & those vicious Corgis to finish off the Cabinet - she'll come looking for those who didn't party at the Jubilee.... She does own the Tower of London & that place has a BAD reputation :(

exoticfruits · 27/05/2012 07:01

There is one, lionsgorawr- on 3rd held by republicans. I don't know why they are bothering because the contrast will be huge.
You have a whole thread full on here and yet it will be hugely successful with masses of people celebrating.

BrittaPerry · 27/05/2012 23:07

Well, we have plenty of local celebrations round here... statues of miners being unveiled, local (mostly mining) heritage weekends (including marquees, banners, bunting, local school children singing, cake stalls, etc) a japanese kite/american links festival thing, again with the bunting, tents, banners, school kids etc. Then of course out of walking distance we have things like the great north run, the (amazing) miners gala and so on.

There isn't really much need for us to celebrate a load of posh people living miles away. I just don't really care which one is in charge, apart from being vaguely interested in whether anyone unusual will happen re things like succession.

DH likes to remind me that Versailles makes far more money from tourists than our lot do...

ravenAK · 28/05/2012 00:59

Tbh, exoticfruits, I think the celebrations will be a bit limp - Charles & Diana's wedding was a bit more of an event than William & thingy's, no? I think 'hugely successful' might be a bit hopeful.

Agree with you that it's a waste of effort by Republicans to have an anti day - polite indifference is a more telling response for those who feel there's a point to be made, & probably a more honest one for those of us who'd rather not have a royal family but don't find they impinge too much these days.

exoticfruits · 28/05/2012 07:22

Time will tell ravenAK- I know which I would put my money on- but then I wouldn't call William and Kate's wedding a bit limp!

chipmunksex · 28/05/2012 13:21

Zombie Queen Mum Grin

I really like it, but it probably wouldn't go down well.

People can be so touchy.Hmm

RevoltingPeasant · 28/05/2012 13:34

I think I live in some parallel universe Devon as I have not seen any preparations whatsoever for this besides a display of biscuits in Sainsbury's Confused

There was stuff up for the torch relay as that passed quite near here but nothing specifically for the jubilee as far as I can see. No evidence that neighbours are planning mass festivities - maybe they just haven't invited us!!

We are having ILs over and imagine we will be at the beach that day, weather permitting - ho hum!

albertcamus · 28/05/2012 14:53

Glad to say we are escaping to France, that splendid Republic, to avoid the wall-to-wall nonsense, hope it's all over when we return after Half Term.

Queenie will not have to die in agony at the age of 88 for want of morphine in an NHS bed like my Dad who spent 5 years in a WW2 Prisoner of War camp (I'm pleased for her btw).

Her offspring and huge extended family will not face the daily danger and grind eg my DTDs who are social workers in London - their jobs are far more onerous eg opening art galleries, pretending to read the weather forecast etc.

Her idiot eldest son expects to eventually put the crown on the head of the horse he is married to ...

While we are paying for it, surrounded by made in China bunting.

Am already well advanced for our exit strategy when the dear old lady passes on. No way do we wish to live in the UK under a man who wants to 'be your tampon'. Good luck to all who do :)

MarysBeard · 28/05/2012 14:57

I am mildly Royalist but just excited at the prospect of a party - any excuse. Especially in rather depressing times. Quite excited about the Olympics, although I'm not going - yet. DH is taking DD1 to a footy match.

quirrelquarrel · 28/05/2012 15:47

Well, I don't really know what it is! and I don't care enough to find out. I'm not British anyway.

ravenAK · 30/05/2012 22:56

Ds's costume is now sorted. Tight white jeans, eyeliner pencil moustache & t-shirt.
