am I going to look like a crazy-weird stalker?

A favourite lecturer of mine is launching a new book.

He signed my book at uni and led my seminars so 'knows' my face - well not quite.

Anyway he has an event that I already have tickets for about the book, but have just stumbled across another event at a smaller venue about 4 days later.

Am I going to look like a nutty-groupie (albeit a geeky one).

I probably am, but I really just enjoy hearing him talk and the subject is fascinating.

It depends. Are you going with friends? If so, you could say (if you have the chance) that you enjoyed it so much you brought your friends along.

Are your intentions towards this person strictly honourable? Truth, please!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/05/2012 14:52

I am going with a friend to the first one, but can't think of anyone to come to the second.

This is assuming that he actually has any idea who I am anyway.

Honourable - absolutely. I am engaged by his passion for his subject and may have a tiny crush, but my intentions are absolutely honourable Grin

I wonder if DH would come with me, it wont last more than an hour I imagine.

At the 'big' event he's unlikely to notice you (unless you ask questions and draw attention to yourself!) and at the smaller venue he might be glad of your presence if only a few people turn up! :o

Psammead · 26/05/2012 14:57

What's his subject?

Is the second one going to be a repeat of the first? I might stick to just one, tbh.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/05/2012 15:01

I actually dont know how big the big event will be, but the second is at a bookshop. I might just go to th bigger and see how big it is.

He is likely going to be promoting the book at both events so they will be similar. I only need to go to one, but I just want to go to them all frankly.

Pssamead - Russian History.

I think you should get a T shirt printed with his face on it SmileWink

But no... go for it. Life is for enjoying the good moments.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/05/2012 15:27

Hahaha - at the T-shirt idea. I don't really need the encouragement.

Ooh I love the fact someone else gets starry eyed over academics!

I went to a conference and got sat next to a respected professor in my field at lunch and couldn't speak! She turned me into a blithering idiot!

aldiwhore · 26/05/2012 15:33

Go for it, he may think you're a groupie, or he may just be super chuffed that his subject has affected you so deeply.

Of course, he may feel a little awkward about it, but you not actually sending him knickers in the post or tailing him through town taking photos are you... are you?

I suppose if you flipped the roles here, how would you feel? I'd feel deeply flattered in a mildly awkward shy way... and there's nothing wrong in that.

Dprince · 26/05/2012 15:44

Going to both may give the 'groupie' impression. But going to one probably won't surprise him. I am sure there are at least a few people who have been to few of his events or he has previously signed books for. Its not unusual for someone who has written books (then has the amount of interest to hold a few seminars about it) to have fans. I would say that you may be starting in I behaviour if you think you're the only fan and get upset on the day when you find you are not. But I don't think you would do that, hopefully.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 26/05/2012 16:47

Haha... I realise I am not his only fan. He is renowned for an ego the size of, well possibly Russia so he will not be threatened by presence that is for sure.

Rhonajean - I am equally enthralled by his female colleagues ability to speak so movingly about Italy, but sadly lack the interest in Italian history to follow her around. And academics are so much more worthy of a fan base than this ridiculous celebrity worship. It took me the whole academic year to get my book signed.
