to think it's outrageous to not put suncream on your child in this weather

a little girl aged 3/4 was playing out front this afternoon wearing barely any clothes, no parent in sight and was bright red everywhere. SHe was out there for a good while. her poor little face was glowing with the heat.

i'm sooo angry. had it been remotely appropriate, i'd have slathered my suncream all over her.

AIBU to think it's really not that fucking hard to cover your child in suncream before they go outside, especially when it's this hot?

Fleurdebleurgh · 25/05/2012 20:51

Both my kids went bright red today despite being slathered in suncream. YABU.

NellyTheElephant · 25/05/2012 20:55

I agree with you if it was her arms / body that were bright red (you say bright red everywhere), but if it was just her face then there's every chance it wasn't sunburn - my DS is constantly bright red at the moment however much sun screen he has on - it's the heat, not sunburn, after half an hour back inside it fades. In your position I might have offered her a squirt of sun screen (not started rubbing it in for her but at 3 /4 she can easily do that herself)

onemoreminute · 25/05/2012 20:56

Then Fleurdebleurgh you didn't do it right.

dawnpreview · 25/05/2012 20:56

Mine had red legs by the end of the day, and I was constantly slapping the suncream on. YAB a bit U.

MsKittyFane · 25/05/2012 20:59

YABU. How do you know she didn't have suncream on? Both DD and I go bright red, sweat I come out in an attractive heatrash when out in hot sun.
YANBU to expect parents to put suncream on DC but in this case you have no idea if she was wearing it or not.

fuckarama · 25/05/2012 20:59

My kids have been outside all day and they've both had suncream on. DD2 is bright red in her face but it's because she's been running about - not because she's sunburnt.

dawnpreview · 25/05/2012 20:59

I have to add that I do feel terrible that my kids have red legs, I really thought I had put enough cream on and topped it up frequently.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/05/2012 20:59

Yup YABU to judge the parents without knowing (but as a whole YANBU, of course people should use sunscreen in this weather.) How do you know she didnt have it on. DD goes red, even when slathered top to toe in F50. And yes. I do it right onemoreminute. Hmm

Rubirosa · 25/05/2012 21:00

There is no excuse to allow small children to get sunburnt - it's neglectful imo.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/05/2012 21:00

Ha xpost MsKitty.
I'm such aslow typer...

MsKittyFane · 25/05/2012 21:00

To add, we go red everywhere : arms, legs and beatroot face!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 25/05/2012 21:02

Yup. Me and ds both went very pink in the heat today but are now back to our pasty white selves.

However yanbu if she's still red tomorrow

MsKittyFane · 25/05/2012 21:02

Beetroot? Beatroot? Need to learn to spell!!

BornSicky · 25/05/2012 21:02

her face, arms, legs and tummy/back were completely red. her face was especially bad. definitely burnt, rather than a heat rash or similar.

i wish i had asked if wanted some cream, but daren't bring down the wrath of her parents (who i know won't have bothered with suncream).

I saw a very badly burnt baby when I was in Spain
By baby I mean 9 months
FFs
Baby brutish btw, not span ish
Didn't really know what I could do, as baby was still in full sum at 1pm I told the hotel management Sad
No exuse

Guitargirl · 25/05/2012 21:05

Oh FGS, DS and I have both been bright red today despite suncream - not burnt just hot. Fine once we got home and cooled down. If you can see a child's skin is red in bright sunlight it's unlikely to be sunburn (not from today anyway), the burn would come out later this evening.

AThingInYourLife · 25/05/2012 21:07

Putting suncream on is not the end of your responsibility to make sure your small child doesn't get sunburn/sunstroke.

They should also have a hat on, and not be out in the direct sun for hours in the middle of the day.

MsKittyFane · 25/05/2012 21:07

So you examined her closely OP?
As I said, my pasty skin and DD's go red. We look burnt.
As someone else said, if she is still red tomorrow morning you are right.

onemoreminute · 25/05/2012 21:07

There is a different between a burnt red face and a heat rash/sweaty hot red face.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 25/05/2012 21:08

Grin at the Brutish typo.

ginmakesitallok · 25/05/2012 21:09

YANBU - I've read loads of threads on here in the past where people have said that you don't need suncream in the UK - bollocks.

RillaBlythe · 25/05/2012 21:11

I saw a little girl this evening - she's in my DDs nursery class so 3/4 - who was sunburnt. Definitely burnt as she had the strap marks.

BornSicky · 25/05/2012 21:11

mskittyfane yup, i did have a very good look, seeing as she was playing in my front garden and I went out to go and see why.

she was burnt, properly burnt, not red from a bit of sun, or had heat rash, but burnt. she will be burnt tomorrow too, i can guarantee it.

I took my two to a playground yesterday and some nursery workers brought out about 15 kids from the nearby nursery. I heard one of the adults say to another, "did you bring the suncream?" and the other said "Nah, but we won't be out long". They were there for 45 mins and it was BOILING! I'd have been fuming if I was a parent of one of those kids! Confused

ShowOfHands · 25/05/2012 21:12

I almost never use suncream. Would you like to come and sit on my sofa and judge me? I have minstrels... Grin

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for anybody to suffer sunburn. My mother has paid a hard price for not protecting herself adequately. But I agree that perhaps you don't know in this case.
