Yes yes to security guard who told a bare chested guy he could not come in without a shirt on

No no to the reason he gave 'It's health and safety'

Confused

Please don't come into this shop bare chested or with a bikini top on. Others don't find it particularly attractive.
Despite what you might think.
That should do it.

MaisyMooCow · 26/05/2012 11:08

Many years ago when I worked for an airline we wouldn't allow male passengers to board unless they had their tops on. Bare chests were definitely a no no.

carabos · 26/05/2012 16:23

Seen in our Tesco today:
Woman in bikini and flip flops.
Teenage girl in bikini top, shorts, socks Confused.
Woman in a jersey dress over jeans, trainers - must have been melting in the heat.
Old lady in hat, tweed coat, tights, brogues.

Didn't see any bare- chested men.

carabos · 26/05/2012 16:26

And also saw a fascinating sight - tiny little girl (as in tiny enough to be in the trolley seat) reading out the shopping list to her dad. She read and talked like an adult . I couldn't work out her age, but she looked about 2!

slowestwildebeast · 26/05/2012 16:56

Tesco telling people what to wear makes me laugh.
Morally hideous Tesco saying people with tops off is offensive.
Might troop down now in my bikini.

LeeCoakley · 26/05/2012 17:12

Absolutely agree MsKitty. I'm sure they don't mind buff men coming in but how can they then stop middle-aged men coming in with massive saggy boobs and stomachs that reach their knees? Ditto women. Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 26/05/2012 17:33

I went to Tesco with DD today -she spent most of the time uttering, in a very dramatic fashion, "My eyes! My eyes! I've been scarred for life" at some of the sights.

HerBigChance · 26/05/2012 17:38

They should just say that Tesco has a dress code, imposed by the management, if you don't meet it you can't come in. And if you don't like it, feel free to write in and complain.

I completely agree. They shouldn't have to spout any nonsense about health and safety either. It's just good manners not to amble about in a supermarket or shopping centre without a top on.

marriedinwhite · 26/05/2012 17:56

It's about sex discrimination. If you let in bare chested men you have to let in bare chested women and they might not conform to the fruit counter rules for perfectly sized melons

TheUnMember · 26/05/2012 18:58

They say it's health and safety because it passes the buck on responsibility to a unchallengeable concept rather than an actual person.

Lueji · 26/05/2012 19:49

What if it was the diet coke guy?

Surely he should be allowed in. Wink

oshuk · 26/05/2012 19:57

We had a self-catering apartment in Hawaii and therefore used the local supermarket on a daily basis, I felt overdressed as everyone shopped in bikinis and bare feet. I think the UK gets a bit precious sometimes.

bunnybabylon · 26/05/2012 20:09

i think they should ban maxi dresses too, they're very ugly. that and bare chested men. there must be standards.

PrideOfChanur · 26/05/2012 20:57

I was going to say who cares, but obviously loads of you do.Bare chested blokes? Women in bikini tops? It's not as if it's an uncommon sight generally, what's so special about Tesco that it should be kept bare chest etc free? It's a supermarket for heavens sake, not the Ritz. Ditto for bare feet - what is the problem with that?
(Disclaimer - I myself am very staid and boring and wouldn't go anywhere in a bikini top...)

slowestwildebeast · 26/05/2012 21:50

bunnybabylon you clearly haven't seen any nice maxi dresses!

YABU don't shop in Tesco!

eurochick · 26/05/2012 21:52

I'm sure it was elf and safety. He could have caught his death in there. Those open fridges make supermarkets bloody freezing.

AmIthatbad · 26/05/2012 21:57

"elf and safety". Have I wandered onto the Mail Online by mistake?

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 26/05/2012 22:06

He should have just said store policy if that's what they want from their customers.

Mia4 · 26/05/2012 22:44

Hmmm Frostbitten nipples if you lean over the chest freezers too long?

scarletmacaw · 27/06/2012 17:24

Oh for goodness sake are we going back to the Victorian ages? Bikinis are not rude. Shirtless men are not rude. No nipples or genitalia showing and you are not naked. Ok really hairy or fat people could be classed as painful to look at, but otherwise who cares? It's a supermarket, not a posh restaurant.

scarletmacaw · 27/06/2012 17:27

I saw two young women in Asda once wearing only underwear! They were also a bit tipsy and looked like they'd come from a party. No Asda staff said or did anything, although a few customers took photos.

SusanneLinder · 27/06/2012 17:30

I think I should be employed by Tesco to check the torsos of any bare chested men. :o If they are fit, they can get in for eye candy for the ladies,if they have a beer belly, I will politely hand them a tee shirt to cover up :o

Quenelle · 27/06/2012 17:32

They say it's health and safety because it passes the buck on responsibility to a unchallengeable concept rather than an actual person.

This. Well said UnMember.

This is what has given actual health and safety at work (something we wouldn't want to be without) a bad name.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/06/2012 17:33

I'm having visions of very hairy chested/backed/shouldered men sweating and leaning over the unpackaged fruit and veg...

scarletmacaw · 27/06/2012 17:42

@Quenelle - we certainly would want to be without H&S at work. It's a nuisance. We always managed without it before. Everyone should look out for themselves and stop trying to blame others. It's very childish.

@TitsalinaBumSquash - that would be the same as coming in covered in mud - unhygienic. But since the most you will touch food with is your hands or arms, who cares what the rest of you is wearing? I've never seen a woman chucked out for wearing a sleeveless (but otherwise conservative) top.
