To think having a Kindle makes you much less tolerant of duff books?

Just something DH said last night - I was moaning that I deleted three books yesterday (not all free ones) because I just 'couldn't get into them'. He says I'm always doing this (true) and that when I used to read paperbacks I would soldier on and read them through to the end, even if I didn't like them much.

So now I'm wondering why that is. And is it just me?

I think so, I don't delete but will stop reading them because it's so easy to get another one, rather than having to wait and go to the shops.

Tillyscoutsmum · 24/05/2012 11:31

Not just you... Stopping reading a "real" book always seemed a bit more wasteful really - just the actual physical act of putting it in the bin/charity box whereas its just a few buttons to press on the kindle. I also find myself flicking between books more than I ever did with paper copies...

Don't use a kindle but I can sort of understand this. If you don't finish a book - and I know what you mean about struggling on - you feel it's always there waiting for you to finish. Whereas with a kindle, you (presumably) press a button, and it doesn't sit there gloating at you forever!

Must think about investing in one! Grin

BonkeyMollocks · 24/05/2012 11:31

I can't do that!

I start a book, I have to finish it even if it is crap!

I have this weird compulsion to find out what happens. Be it on the kindle or a book.

ZacharyQuack · 24/05/2012 11:32

Were the books that you deleted ones that you would have purchased in paperback? I find with a kindle that you have easy access to a lot of crap books, and because it is so easy to download them that I end up with a lot of books that I would never buy from a bookshop, or borrow from the library. Then, because the kindle book was free, if it's crap I delete it.

DiscoDaisy · 24/05/2012 11:34

I'm the same BonkeyMollocks. I always have to finish a book in the hope that it gets better. I do find that I have to be really fussy about which books I download and unless the description really grips me I won't choose it.

ElectricSoftParade · 24/05/2012 11:35

I am on an economy drive atm and have been getting quite a few free books.

When I read a real book I tend to plow on and try to finish it but with the Kindle, if I'm not enjoying it it gets deleted pronto.

Mind you, if I have bought the book on the Kindle it stays just in case I fancy going back to it.

There now, clear as mud!

BonkeyMollocks · 24/05/2012 11:37

I can't friggin delete on mine anyway!

It gets 'archived' Hmm

which means I could never let anyone see my kindle for fear of being outed as having shite taste in books and the odd norty one Wink

Fireandashes · 24/05/2012 11:44

I used to be like BonkeyMollocks but I decided life is too short to read bad books. I don't want to lie on my deathbed thinking "if only I hadn't wasted so much time reading Rachel Cusk."

I'm a real cheapskate with my Kindle, I only download books that are free or a couple of pounds (really want to read the new Hilary Mantel but baulking at £11.99) so I don't get too stressed if something turns out to be rubbish. I do read the blurb and any reviews and work on the principle that if I'm not sure, I'll download it if it's free and not bother if it's not so I haven't had too many duds so far. Sample chapters help too.

badtasteflump · 24/05/2012 11:45

Bonkey If I remember rightly you can delete them. Not on the Kindle itself though, you have to go into Amazons website, then 'Manage your Kindle', then a list of all your books will come up, including ones that you've 'archived'. You can delete the archived ones from there, then when you next sync your Kindle they will be gone forever Smile

Ooo thanks for that, will try! :)

cocolepew · 24/05/2012 12:05

Another poster has a thread about a Jubilee sale on Kindle today, some good bargins on it.

LemonTurd · 24/05/2012 12:08

No, if I've paid I still plough through Smile

If It's a free one that's crap, I'll happily delete.
