AIBU to pick up litter?

I have decided to pick up a piece of litter every day. If everyone did this then there would be about 60 million fewer pieces of litter on the ground tomorrow than there are today Smile

There are lots of picnickers in my local park, which is fab, but some of them get up and leave their wrappers and rubbish behind. Haven't they appreciated the beauty of the place and don't they want others to do so? They must realise they arrived somewhere lovely, enjoyed it and then left it looking shabby.... Perhaps if they find their mum or their best friend is picking litter UP then it would make them think twice about dropping it in the first place? This seems more constructive than berating them. Anyone care to join me in picking up a piece today and every day? Or AIBU?

Yanbu.

The bloody litter droppers are though.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/05/2012 15:11

YANBU.

Just be careful what you're picking up, or get one of those grabby things.

My mum and dad take plastic bags with them when they go walking and always get a bagful. My mum will also go after people if she sees them dropping it - with an "excuse me, you dropped this". I am not brave enough to do this.

relativity · 23/05/2012 15:12

endoplasm I like your mum and dad already Smile.

YANBU but as endoplasmic said, be careful what you are picking up, and maybe use gloves.

I live in Scotland where we are sooooo patriotic - yeah right. Until it comes to litter, imo Scotland is the most litter strewn country in the world, scruffy gits.

Greatauntirene · 24/05/2012 02:45

It's the stuff chucked by long-distance lorry drivers that annoys me, they should know better, anything to avoid having to stop.

Grumpla · 24/05/2012 03:32

My DH often gathers a bagful of glass bottles from the bench on the hill near us. I can totally understand why the yoof hang out and drink / smoke there, it's a lovely spot and I'd probably join in if I thought I could get away with it but it fucking ENRAGES me that they don't pick up after themselves in a park where little kids play.

When I was a teenager I used to regularly hang out in parks drinking smoking socializing but I always put my rubbish in the bin after!

We do too. DCs (older two are 4.5 and 2.5) and I take the dog out every day and they pick up anything they see. We've had some very funny looks from people. We also go out en masse with our grabbers and a big bag and pick loads up, particularly by the road/river. It's so sad, especially when you think that the people littering are those supposedly out enjoying the lovely countryside around here Confused

On the last litter picking walk we did, DH told me of a scheme he'd heard being discussed. Every wrapper/bottle etc would have be linked to the purchaser via it's barcode. Litter pickers would then scan the rubbish and the purchasers/litterers would face increased tax. Bit big brother but worth it imo. I'd also happily face the risk of paying a bit in error if it sorted out the culprits. Shame dog poo (and cat for that matter!) doesn't have a barcode.

Emmielu · 24/05/2012 05:48

Its 2nd nature isn't it to be putting rubbish in the bin. Unfortunately some of the rubbish on paths here are broken glass bottles. Sad

YANBU
We are organising a 'spring clean' of our street over the bank holiday weekend. Council are helping with equipment. The local Uni students also go out on organised litter picking evenings.
Keep up the good work.

I live in an AONB. Every Monday I take a bag out with me when walking to collect bits of crapola from MY hills and restore them to their proper state.

I have found a HUGE pizza box about 20 minutes climb up the hill. WHY would anyone do that?

Every other day of the week, there is nothing there, no litter at all, because the weekday walkers know the hill belongs to them.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 24/05/2012 07:23

Oh, but dog-poo does have a barcode - DNA.

If I was in charge......

Magneto · 24/05/2012 07:30

Yanbu even my 21 month old ds knows that rubbish goes in the bin. The last time we went to the park he kept trying to put litter in the bin, I'm trying to teach him to point it out to me rather than him doing it himself because of the safety risks as he doesn't know that you don't pick up certain types of rubbish! Envy < vom face

SqueezeMeBakingPowder · 24/05/2012 07:33

When me and DH were at the Grand Canyon, a car drove away leaving their MacDonalds lunch empties at the side of the road! We were completely amazed and immediately picked it up and binned it!

I often pick up litter round where I live, I think it's a great idea!

IvanaHumpalot · 24/05/2012 07:47

Norks, I too live in an AONB - I tend to stop by the cars I see parked up and ask them what shit they are dumping on the back lanes! Last two times it's actually been youngsters putting the crap into their cars, for their Duke of Edinb. award. My gast was flabbered and faith restored.

Won't stop me asking though. Tyres, builders rubbish, white goods and mattresses are not part of the countryside. I will get my arse kicked one day...

Abra1d · 24/05/2012 07:50

One day i am going to take the bin bags of Macdonalds wrappers and Costa cups i collect from our lane into the various outlets and tell them they can deal with it.

AmberLeaf · 24/05/2012 07:53

I hate litterbugs!

I just cant drop litter and neither do my children.

BUT!

My mum used to do the whole picking up litter thing and now she does it with my children but as shes old she makes them do it~!

They are as mortified as I was all those years ago, embarrassing!

That said good on you.

mrsscoob · 24/05/2012 08:17

YANBU. If your interested Surfers against Sewage organise regular beach cleans, it is amazing when you do one and see how much litter there is on the beach and what could end up in the sea.

Good for you! I'm going to join you and pick up some litter today
