I am currently nil by mouth, meant to go in for an op this morning at the hospital. Have seen anaesthetist, surgeon, had bloods taken. No beds. Asked to come back in two hours, went back at 10.30 (bn there from 8) No beds. they have taken my number and going to call me when there is a bed. Saw surgeon who says I can wait around next day or two or have another op booked but will be a month. Don't kniw if can wait that long though (is partial small bowel obstruction). It's so stressful. I do appreciate they have emergencies but the surgeon said he could do the op but just that there were no beds. I felt like saying well I'll just walk into the theatre then. Surely they'd have a bed there!

does that mean that you arent allowed to eat until a bed becomes available?

Mharhi · 23/05/2012 14:30

Wishing I'd eaten more yesterday, just a roll watching the torch go by. Thought would be this morning. Wonder if bit of juice mixed with water would be ok?

Yes NBM (nil by mouth). there were others in the waiting room seems to be this happens a lot. One said had been back twice, similar.

Just rang the SAU and they said I could have a glass of water or two. Hoping to ring me in an hour or two.

Water takes 2 hours to leave your stomach, so if you had some now you wouldn't be NBM until 16:20. If you haven't heard anything by now though I would be starting to think surgery today was unlikely unless the operating list is planned to go into the evening.

The best thing to do is have a glass of water as soon as a delay becomes apparant. That way you will be starved again when it's your turn.

I would give them a call. It's not fair to make you wait starved all day, especially if it's hot.

Ithinkitsjustme · 23/05/2012 14:41

No advice but hope they ring soon, good luck

anniemcphee · 23/05/2012 14:42

stick to water, don't have juice. If you do and they find you a bed you will delay your surgery further.
It is common that beds are not available I am affraid.

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 23/05/2012 14:43

You poor thing...waiting around is horrible. Especially when it's for something so major.

I agree it's worth giving them a call to see what's happening.

BTW, "bed" doesn't mean physical bed, it means space on the appropriate ward (i.e. staff available to nurse you)!

Mharhi · 23/05/2012 14:45

I think they go into the evening about 8pm. Wondered whether to say will give up today and go back in the morning. Yes I do understand if there are emergencies...

Thanks outrageous! Maybe they could have rang me before if they were full. That doesn't seem to happen though.

When my op was delayed they kept me sat on the ward and attached me to a drip to prevent dehydration. Poor you, you must be feeling pretty rotten by now.
