Nail polish on babies?

handbagCrab · 23/05/2012 12:14

Not sure if AIBU but I saw a baby being pushed around with bright pink painted toenails and I thought it was a bit ott.

Is it a bit much to paint a baby's toenails or is it the done thing for little dds?

I do this with DD. it never even crossed my mind that it would be harmful or damaging.

IAmNotACowbag · 23/05/2012 12:40

Have you smelt nail varnish? Have you seen what it can do if you just leave it on? Have you smelt the remover? Have you seen what it can do to your nails let alone a baby's? ARE YOU THINKING OF THE CHILDREN AT ALL?!

MustControlFistOfDiplodocus · 23/05/2012 12:41

Panda Grin yes but probably due to the nailvarnish and pink dress he's wearing today

Katiepoes · 23/05/2012 12:42

We've gone from nail polish to fake tan and makeup in one leap? My Jordan-in-training is doomed so.

ReindeerBollocks · 23/05/2012 12:42

But cowbag, my DC's look so pwetty with it on.

Especially when DS used to wear it, he has such slender hands... Shame he got big and thought it too uncool to wear it anymore.

KellyElly · 23/05/2012 12:43

IAmNotACowbag there is special peel off nail varnish for kids so very different than adult nail varnish and no remover needed. I would imagine the majority of parents who let their little ones play dress up would use this.

BarredfromhavingStella · 23/05/2012 12:43

I don't like it myself & wouldn't paint DD's nails, her little friend has her toenails painted (they're 2 1/2 btw) & I want t cringe when I see them. Each to thier own though....... Will add that I'm also against the ear piercing thing-leave it until they are old enough to make the decision.

ProfCoxWouldGetIt · 23/05/2012 12:44

I think it depends on the age of the baby. DD is 2,5 and saw me painting my nails at the weekend (a very rare occurence, but I had a girls night out and wanted to make the effort) and she was very keen on having her nails done to.

I eventually did only one nail with a light coat (that actually peeled off in the bath)

But if DD wants to play along when I'm getting ready, I'm not going to stop her, she's just copying what I do, surely that is how we learn

Being stupid, where do you live OP? I wish it had been hot enough round here to justify taking a child out without socks and shoes on!!

ReindeerBollocks · 23/05/2012 12:52

You ok Cowbag?

IAmNotACowbag · 23/05/2012 12:54

I will be if someone loosens these bloody stays and cracks open the smelling salts.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 23/05/2012 12:55

I've painted DD's nails loads since she was about 2 but only when she's asked. I wouldn't paint a babies solely because I would worry about them putting their fingers toes in their mouths before the nail varnish dried.

KateShmate · 23/05/2012 12:55

I have to say that nail varnish doesn't bother me too much - no way near as much as ear piercing babies' etc.
It definitely doesn't help when DC have older siblings!
DD1 is nearly 6 and loves to have her toes painted - DD2 (4) follows and wants hers done, then DDTriplets (3 next month) beg for theirs to be done too. I think even before they were 2 they wanted theirs done aswell. Its easy for everyone to just tell me to say 'no' - but when you have 3 2YO's screaming for a bit of paint on their toes, you realize that the world won't end if you paint them.
Anything for a bit of peace and quiet Grin

susiemumof · 23/05/2012 12:56

My dd has this alot (20 months) it's because she sees her older sisters doing it and sits next to them pointing at her feet saying "me me me" till they give in and paint them for her.

I think it's cute Blush

FWIW, I don't paint finger nails after I found DD2 nibbling the paint off Wink

handbagCrab · 23/05/2012 12:58

I'd say thr baby was 12 months or so.

I'm oop north i think It's not often we get to wear summery clothes so I guess that's why the nails stood out to me!

It didn't look like child's polish but could have been if its changed since the 80s to look more like real polish.

I always thought my nephew looked quite fetching with a bit of pink on his nails - especially when teamed with strings of pearls and shuffling around in my SiL's heels

Could have been this mum...
www.cafemom.com/group/babies/forums/read/11306120/Nail_polish_on_babies_fingers_toes_update_pg_5_picture
I don't think I like the idea of it for babies but then I spend so much time on Pinterest and Mumsnet that I never have time to cut paint my own nails, let alone get started on the kids and the cat.

RubyFakeNails · 23/05/2012 13:05

I used to let DD1 paint DD2s nails all the time, kept them both quiet and both happy so whats the problem, its harmless fun.

I don't like this suggestion that sounds very "nail polish on a baby implies she's called little chardonnay and probably finishes off her mums fags"

Take the judgey pants off, its nail varnish FFS, you'd think she was toting a crack pipe.

pumpkinsweetie · 23/05/2012 13:15

Imo babies so young shouldn't be wearing it but i do see where peeps are coming from on the sibling thing, and nail varnish is removable after all , unlike hairdye which isnt. Each to their own, wouldn't really anger me to see it on a child whereas eye-up and hairdye would

5madthings · 23/05/2012 13:23

my boys all used to love getting their toe nails painted as i always paint mine, probably from 18mths to 2ish they started asking, it was only every now and then and they were just playing, ds3 and ds4 who are 7 and 4 still ask for theirs to be painted occasionaly :)

my dd is 17mths i imagine this summer if she wants her nails painted when i am painting mine i will put a little pale polish on her toe nails :)

FrothyOM · 23/05/2012 13:31

YABU I won't hurt her. I admire anyone who can paint the tiny nails of a wriggly baby without making a mess!

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 23/05/2012 14:02

it can be useful.....
I once worked with a set of newborn triplets - 2 were identical. One of them had her toe nails painted so that everyone could tell the babies apart.
