I'm bored with my job
I don't know what I'd rather be doing
Think I'd quite like to chuck it all in and have the summer off

AIBU to think come September I'll be able to get another job?

Dunno. Depends what you do for a living, how much you need to earn come September, what explanation you will be able to give for having the summer off (and whether this is likely to matter in your profession/line of work), what area you live in etc...

It isn't easy getting a job these days - certainly it's harder than it was 10 years ago in my experience. Can you get another job now and tell them you want to start in September? Many jobs have a 3 month notice period so that might be possible.

youarehere · 22/05/2012 18:54

I wouldn't say don't. But unless you have been living in a cave for the last 4 years or are at the very top of your field and people are fighting to employ you, surely you know finding a job at the moment is not easy

If you can afford to support yourself while you don't work (with a bit extra in case you can't walk into a new job in sept) then go for it!
Would be great to have the summer off, wish I was in a position to do it.

mummymeister · 22/05/2012 18:56

Its a recession. i hope you can find a job but if greece goes toes up then things are going to get a lot worse. Not sure as an employer how i would feel about asking the question "so why did you leave your last job" to get the answer "i was bored" this needs a lot of thought, financial planning and the realisation that you may not get a job by Sept 2013 let alone this sept. good luck with your decision.

TheGreatScootini · 22/05/2012 18:56

If you dont desperately need the money and could manage and you genuinely hate it then why not? But if you do need to work to be financially alright I wouldnt right now-job market is not too great generally-although without knowing what you do its hard to say :)

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/05/2012 18:59

Well, do YOU think you'll be able to get another job in September?

What do you do, where are you in the country, are there a lot of jobs going in your area right now? How are your finances, can you afford the drop in income? Can you afford for it to be permanent if you don't get another job? Is boredom really a good enough reason to risk it?

Destiny065 · 22/05/2012 19:00

On one hand there is no point in doing a job that you don't want to be in trust me i done it for years but in another sense if you cant afford not to work then am afraid sometimes we have to do things we don't want to to provideSmile

Debeezandbirds · 22/05/2012 19:00

YANBU. Long as you can support yourself and are aware you may not walk into a job in Sept go for it.

I've just packed my job in so DP can go do his dream job, one income instead of two while I find something else and a massive move. Part of my reasoning outside of wanting to support DP was boredom, nothing ventured nothing gained, you don't have life adventures in the office. :o

lardylump · 22/05/2012 19:01

dont do it. its always easier to get a job once you are in a job. Even a crap job is better than no job. think about paying the school for a weeks dinner money, in 5p peices because the inlaws 'dont need them' (thank you MIL you are a star)

sugarice · 22/05/2012 19:07

How old are you and what do you do? I want to return to work in 9-5 hours but I'm considered too old for my chosen profession, I'm 44. Don't leave on a whim.

Chubfuddler · 22/05/2012 19:08

You are aware you can't claim JSA aren't you?

CremeEggThief · 22/05/2012 19:11

I think you need to think things through in more detail before you hand your notice in.
You do come across as not realising just how hard it is for most people now to get any job. So please look into things bow, not after you've quit.

CremeEggThief · 22/05/2012 19:12

Sorry, now, not bow!

Chubfuddler · 22/05/2012 19:13

I only say that because Dh used to employ a young woman who decided to jack in her job so she could spend the summer with her mates back from uni. However she had been under the misapprehension she could claim JSA. when she realised she couldn't she asked him to say he had fired her. Hmm

Mayisout · 22/05/2012 20:09

Start seriously looking for a job then when you have a new one tell them you are available from X date giving yourself a couple of weeks off after finishing at the present one.

Sallyingforth · 22/05/2012 20:12

If you are bored with your job, leave it.
Let one of the thousands who desperately want to work have it instead.

Fozzleyplum · 22/05/2012 20:13

Don't give notice on your current job until you have a new one lined up. It's always harder to get a job when you're not in work. The last thing you need in the current climate is a gap in your cv to explain away.

SkiBumMum · 22/05/2012 20:16

My colleague just did this. She left the office this afternoon and boarded a plane to South America this evening! Respect her in many ways. She was miserable at work. No dependants, mortgage etc. For her, why not?

1412 · 22/05/2012 20:16

Can I have your job please? I'm happy to take anything on, at any salary. After three years of looking for a job after being made redundant, and dozens of interviews where the job went to someone else (usually internally, or someone younger, or someone cheaper, or someone without childcare commitments...) I am beyond frustrated.
If you really hate your job, look for a new one but don't just walk out!

misslinnet · 22/05/2012 20:20

It's easier to get a job when you're in one.

If you're bored with your job, you might be better having a good think about what you want to do, then trying to find a job in that area.

If you want some time off inbetween, then you could try negotiating a start date that would let you take holiday between finishing the old job and starting the new one.

StetsonsAreCool · 22/05/2012 20:30

Well, it's just taken me 4 months to get a job after being made redundant (not just walking out because I was bored).

I literally got my first offer a few days ago.

So if you think you'll be less bored spending the summer job hunting so that you can get a new job for September, then go for it.
