To get annoyed when job descriptions don't refer to salary

Why can't they state what the bloody salary is going to be or even if it's going to be on a scale between x and y.

It's not like I'm looking for a job with Goldman Sachs pondering if they're going to start me off on £5 million or £20 million. I just don't want to waste a couple of days on an application only to find out at the interview that the salary is five bob and a ball of string.

Annoying.

Yes well there are still ALOT of companies that do not have HR departments...let alone a HR person. So although calling an HR department may work when applying for a large organisation in certain professions many of the jobs you apply for do not have them.

I used to work in HR and in recruitment. They are sometimes cagey about salary because they are very flexible for the right person. I agree it's irritating though. Unless you are in a public sector job with a very rigid grade/pay structure there is almost always scope for negotiation if they like you enough.

YANBU. Get this all the time with nannying when looking for ad hoc work. I've started telling people what I expect in the first contact now as too many of them are saying "Oh we'll discuss that when we meet you" and it turns out they want to pay £4/5 an hour Angry

Didn't realise it was a common problem in other fields of work!

bibbitybobbitybunny · 22/05/2012 19:43

Yanbu. Its completely unreasonable not to put a salary (or narrow range) on a job advert.

A very long time ago when I was young and naieve I applied for a job that I thought, realistically, would have a salary of about £18,000. Turns out they were offering £11,000! What a colossal waste of everyone's time that was Hmm.

I would not even consider applying for a job that was not up front about the salary nowadays.

YANBU

I so agree. In fact I think there should be a list of legal requirements when it comes to advertising jobs, I think there are for public sector jobs but these should apply to all jobs.

Another bugbear is they say it's part time, but don't say what hours they want or sometimes don't even say how many hours in total.

Also hate all the Kleeneze/Betterware ads in the way - especially the ones that are not honest about it being Kleeneze."4,000 jobs" Yes, 3000 of them are Kleeneze, 500 are "How to retrain as a stockbroker" and 499 are Avon.

I have just popped here to say.....

Fuck fuck fuck fuckity bollock fucking hell arse. FUCK. Bastards. Shitty shit shit.

I have just crafted the most perfect job application letter and managed to shut down the tab on my iPad. Of couse, it wasnt saved. It is for a catholic school, so I don't feel I could swear on that tab.

And it is paying about.... Hmmmm half of what I was on before. And I bet I won't be able to swear there or bitch or gossip there.

I am currently job hunting and I hate it! So much guess work and cloak and bloody daggers. I got an email for a job recently via an agency which outlined general managerial duties (leading a team, paperwork, working to KPI's etc) then said passion for the product was absolutely vital. Without saying what the product was. Or the company name. Or any clue about the sector. Maybe psychic abilities is one of the skills you're expected to have too.

Ragwort · 24/05/2012 13:41

It can work the other way - my last salaried position (15 years ago Grin) paid very generously - when I was applying for something recently and they asked me what my last salary was I actually lied as I knew there wasn't a chance in a million that the new job would pay anything like my old salary - it was a local authority job and the range had been advertised.

I thought I would look poncey if I actually said what I had been earning Grin.

Footnote - I was offered the job but turned it down, for reasons not related to money Smile.

Frontpaw · 24/05/2012 13:49

I know - I was earning a good whack but the market is truly dire now! Went they ask I just say XXX (so the part time total) and not the pro rata salary. They wouldn't touch me with a barge pole otherwise!

Oh and don't send your Cv anywhere where they offer to have a look at it for you. They then tell you that it is crap, and that it will be getting automatically rejected by the special spftware that employers use - and for £199 will fix it for you and can guarantee interviews. Then call you every fecking day, keep you on the line for ages (I never knew it was possible to speak for that long without drawing breath).
