To feed my family this?

Just discovered that the beef in my fridge was best before yesterday. If I make a stew then put it in a tub in the fridge, do you reckon it'll be ok to feed the family tomorrow evening? The beef looked and smelled fine to me...

Yes

bronze · 22/05/2012 11:31

Oh no I mean

bronze · 22/05/2012 11:31

I mean feed them it.

WorraLiberty · 22/05/2012 11:31

Of course it'll be fine

We were given noses before best before dates.

ScarlettInSpace · 22/05/2012 11:32

If hasn't got a grey tinge or a funny smell then go for it.

BrianButterfield · 22/05/2012 11:33

Yes, beef lasts for ages.

DairyNips · 22/05/2012 11:33

I'd use it. I'm not a meat rinser usually but if I'm ever unsure then I give it a quick wash for peace of mind. Sure it'll be fine once thoroughly cooked.

ScarlettInSpace · 22/05/2012 11:33

lol @ bronze for the concise and direct advice Grin

bronze · 22/05/2012 11:34

It's putting it in aibu wot confused me

vess · 22/05/2012 11:35

Er, no. Best before yesterday and you want to feed it to them tomorrow?
I wouldn't personally. Not worth the risk.

JoanOfNark · 22/05/2012 11:37

How will washing it help, other than if there is anything on it, to splash it all over your kitchen making for fare more likelihood of illness?

Pandemoniaa · 22/05/2012 11:39

I'd cook it and eat it today. Provided it smells OK. I'd not cook it and keep it hanging around in the fridge until tomorrow.

JoanOfNark · 22/05/2012 11:39

and to answer the question, of course I would use it. Use by dates are arbitrary and fairly meaningless, use your eyes and nose instead. The amount of perfectly good food thrown out by people who are slaves to dates printed on packets is obscene.

fuck Blush

sugarice · 22/05/2012 11:39

If it looks and smells normal then it should be fine, it's only 2 days over the use by date.

loopyluna · 22/05/2012 11:39

Sorry. I thought I'd get a quick response here and it could ve construed as unreasonable to feed my kids on out of date meat.
Or unreasonable to throw away food.

Vess, I'd be cooking it today so only one day out really...

Or maybe we should eat it this evening (usually it's pizza night on Tuesday as dds have gymnastics straight from school til 9pm.)

I wouldn't personally, but then I am super paranoid about stuff like that. Everyone else is probably being much more sensible.

bronze · 22/05/2012 11:42

What the would people who wouldn't do about meat from the butcher. That doesn't come with a date

McHappyPants2012 · 22/05/2012 11:42

That's when slow cookers come in handy :) But personally I wouldn't but don't listen to me as I am fussy about use by dates

TheUnMember · 22/05/2012 11:43

I'd cook it and eat a month week after it's best before if it looked and smelled ok. We ain't dead yet.

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 22/05/2012 11:43

Chicken, I wouldn't.
But beef - if it smells and looks fine, I'd go for it. :)

Lizcat · 22/05/2012 11:45

It's supermarket beef probably only hung for 14 days at best. If you had bought it from a butcher it probably would have been hung for at least 28 days. By my reckoning it will still be good for around 7 days after best before date.
