yes, and it should be left on for hours until someone notices half an hour like he does.

What do you do?

Left on. Its to get rid of condensation.

Your DH is right. Smile

Bunbaker · 22/05/2012 08:06

Leave it on or open the window. You don't want mould in your bathroom.

I don't have a bathroom fan or a mouldy bathroom. So on that evidence YANBU.

greenbananas · 22/05/2012 08:11

He's right - it should be left on, or a window whould be left open. Mould happens when the steam left in the room condenses on the cold walls and tiles. You need to get rid of the steam before it condenses.

Callisto, I am guessing that your bathroom is beautifully well ventilated Smile

sugarice · 22/05/2012 08:11

I always turn ours off and open a window otherwise the males in my house would leave it on all morning and all night.

valiumredhead · 22/05/2012 08:23

Open the window!

skrullandcrossbones · 22/05/2012 08:45

I don't open the window for two reasons - they are very low down and we have young children, plus they open on to the street and don't want to be flashing people...

So how long is a while? DH leaves the fan on for hours and hours, which seems a bit of a waste.

HandMadeTail · 22/05/2012 08:48

Get a fan with a timer? Ours all cut out after a while (10 mins?).

ProcrastinationEatsTime · 22/05/2012 08:49

Yeah, y' need some sort of ventilation after a shower. 'tis obvious.

HeathRobinson · 22/05/2012 08:52

Dh is right. You should leave it on and half an hour sounds about right.

sashh · 22/05/2012 09:21

My bathroom has no window, the fan is on all the time (specially designed to be like that) then it does a boost thing when it is switched on

booomchikkawowow · 22/05/2012 09:24

ours turns off when you switch the light off. not bothered about mould since it#'s a rented place for 1 year and the mangment company are VILE

fruitysummer · 22/05/2012 09:26

ours is 'attached' to the light.......it drives me mad, can't have a peaceful bath unless I have it in the dark must go buy candles for bathroom

DH insists on turning lights off all the time, but funnily enough has no problem leaving the bathroom one on Hmm

I just open the window and close the door Grin

MousyMouse · 22/05/2012 09:40

dh is right, get a timer and leave it on for an hour after the shower. 10 mins really isn't enough.

skrullandcrossbones · 22/05/2012 09:47

A timer sounds like a good idea. Do you need an electrician to fit that?

Is the consensus that an hour is a good time limit?

OP posts:
skrullandcrossbones · 22/05/2012 09:49

Yes, I hate the fact it's connected to the light too - don't need the light on this time of year, and don't want the fan coming on when I'm going in at night to brush my teeth...

TheCunnyFunt · 22/05/2012 10:21

MIL has 2 bathrooms, the teeny weeny tiny family shower room has a fan which is connected to the light, it switches on and off when the light goes on and off. The shower room is in the centre of the bungalow so no window.
The MAHOOOOOSIVE master ensuite with jacuzzi bath has a fan which is also connected to the light, this room is at the edge of the house so it has a window, but this fan has a timer of about 5-10 minutes.

Confused go figure!

TheCunnyFunt · 22/05/2012 10:22

Oh forgot, your DH is right, sorry! Try and get a timer installed though, so neither of you have to worry about leaving it on :)

McHappyPants2012 · 22/05/2012 10:34

Mine is connected to the light but there is also a switch so it can be turned off

HecateTrivia · 22/05/2012 10:35

Yes, he's right. It should be left on for a good while. Although probably not 'hours and hours'

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 22/05/2012 10:36

I turn mine off and then open the window....def need some air to get in somewhere or you'll get mould.

Jins · 22/05/2012 11:05

We've got a fancy fan that has a timer. When you switch the light off the fan stays on for half an hour afterwards. It cost a whole pound more than the ordinary one.

Try one of them

eurochick · 22/05/2012 11:12

It should be left on until most of the steam has cleared. That's what it is for.

JoanOfNark · 22/05/2012 11:41

I turn mine off straight away, as the noise drives me bonkers. No mould here.
