to not mow the lawn?

summerintherosegarden · 21/05/2012 13:56

I like the dandelions and daisies that pop up everywhere

The cats love prowling in the long grass and eating it then coughing it up all over the house

Petrol is expensive/bad for the environment (perhaps clutching at straws)

AIBU? Is there a "good" reason to mow the lawn besides tutting neighbours?

It smells nice?

gomowthelawn · 21/05/2012 14:15

YANBU ignore the sodding lawn. I am Wink

curiositykitten · 21/05/2012 14:17

It looks nice.

You can hang the washing without getting lost.

The cats won't have as much to cough up Wink

You won't look as lazy as you do when it's long.

AmnesiaCustard · 21/05/2012 14:18

If you don't mow it, it's not a lawn, it's a paddock.

Yesterday my husband bought a Landroid. Never again will I have to cut the grass.

...

Except the bastard thing won't feckin start. Angry

Mice (and rats.)

Overgrown gardens= nesting material and food sources. Plus it offers cover for them to get closer to the house.

More likely to run the mower over something dangerous or disgusting e.g. a frog/snail/poo or wire/stones/twigs. I almost killed my self last week mowing the front lawn when I ran the mower over some wire edging that had been left on the grass by our neighbour, it whizzed past my ear at speed. I did a check of the garden before I started but it was very hard to spot.

Its much harder and longer to do if the grass is around your knees and you are more likely to break the mower. When I did the front lawn I had a little audience because the lawnmower was struggling so much and I broke the strimmer on it first.

We're about to hire someone to mow our lawn. Sorted.

Yabu get and do it, there are loads of people in top floor flats that would love a garden ( like me 3 years a go) used to hate walking past uncared for gardens When I thought the fun me and the kids could have

bigjoeent · 21/05/2012 16:28

Why not chuck some meadow seed on it and then mow some of it and paths through the rest, then its a designer meadow. My cat likes the long grass too.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/05/2012 16:29

If you don't mow the lawn then it'll make things harder if yours and the neighbours kids get shrunk by the shrinking machine you keep in your attic.

HTH.

Tee2072 · 21/05/2012 16:40

Ah but ABF if they do mow it then the kids won't have anywhere to hide!!!

samandi · 21/05/2012 16:41

If you like the grass long, there's no reason to cut it. I fail to see why you have to "grasp at straws" to justify it. But if you do need another reason, it's good for wildlife and biodiversity, encouraging more insect species to visit which benefits pollination, birds etc.

I'm at that stage. I absolutely love gardening but there's no way I can afford one at the moment :-( I can't believe how unappreciative some people are of their gardens.

Thesis my second favourite chore after ironing Blush

Sad I know but I find both very therapeutic!

Nothing better than a fresh cut lawn (with stripes) and a big pile of freshly laundered ironing Grin

Babylon1 · 21/05/2012 17:13

Should say this is, not thesis!!

summerintherosegarden · 21/05/2012 17:33

I take the nice smell and hiding mouse points - though I think these are countered by the insect/biodiversity points.

McHappyPants, please don't misunderstand me, I MASSIVELY appreciate my garden having lived for years in flats and all the flower beds and vegetable beds are well cared for, it's just the paddock (as I will now be calling it, unless Babylon comes to stay...)

In reality I probably will cave and get one of those push mowers, my biceps aren't what they used to be and could probably use it :)

I left mine for a full Summer once.....I called it a min-meadow. It was gorgeous, we spread a wild flower mix and everything (didn't do much but) it looked lovely x

APlanSoCunning · 21/05/2012 18:31

My DM used to mow a strip the width of the lawn mower around the edge of the lawn so that it showed it was being cared for and that the long stuff in the middle was intentional! She is quite 'environmental' and liked the wildlife aspect and couldn't be bothered to do the rest Grin

Babylon1 · 21/05/2012 21:42

Summerintherosegarden, I'll get packing Wink

CaveMum · 21/05/2012 21:56

We live in a small cul de sac of only 8 houses and one of our neighbours (retired chap) passes comment on our lawn if he thinks it's too long Hmm

DH caves to the pressure but if it were up to me I'd tell said neighbour to cut it himself if it bothers him so much Wink
