To eat a strangers dinner

The PIL came over yesterday with a bunch of frozen food. Their "across the road" neighbour had a freezer breakdown and was just going to throw away the lot and buy a huge new one which wasnt coming until next week.
PIL said they would take some of it off her hands. So they brought us some. I have a turkey crown, lots of frozen fish and some packaged up pre prepared bolognaise.
WIBU to defrost and eat a total stranger's meal? Or should I bin it?

Is it me or is it a bit odd to 'take it off their hands' rather than offer to store it in their freezer until the new one arrives?! Confused

BertieBotts · 20/05/2012 18:14

Okay, I get the 6 month + thing, even though personally I would still eat it. But a month isn't bad, is it? What's the point of a freezer if you're not going to keep stuff in it beyond a couple of weeks?

Imnotbatman · 20/05/2012 18:15

Sorry, they did offer but she said no, she wanted to start fresh (and was insured). (god, now I do sound like Im drip feeding)

Their own freezer might be full.

What's the problem?

Just make sure you heat it up properly, though.

Imnotbatman · 20/05/2012 18:17

Or something like that. Obviously i wasnt privvy to the conversation but they said she declined their offer to store it.

DaisySteiner · 20/05/2012 18:18

Oh, OK Grin

Yeah, I'd eat it.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 20/05/2012 18:30

What Bertie botts said... What exactly is wrong with month old frozen bol? I never know how long to keep stuff in my freezer.....

Oh but I probably wouldn't eat random people's cooking without knowing them! Seems odd.

slowestwildebeast · 20/05/2012 18:32

I was joking about the drip feed. I hate waste and when I say I eat anything I do. I ate cooked chicken breaded thing after I'd let it sit on the bench all night. yuck. And now I am easting 3day old mince that has been in the fridge.
I am clearly odd. Eat the spag bol.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/05/2012 19:18

I'd eat the spag bol, after heating it up properly. I think if you ever eat out, or even prepared ready meals etc. you probably don't want to be too fussy about other people's cooking.

BackforGood · 20/05/2012 19:29

If they definitely didn't want it back, then of course I'd eat it - why wouldn't you ? Confused

2rebecca · 20/05/2012 22:45

Some folk keep stuff in their freezer for far longer than you should so no I wouldn't eat it. If the people whose food it was didn't fancy it then I'd be put off it largely due to that. If it was a relative or friend of mine and everything had dates on and I trusted them yes I'd eat it, but some random neighbour I don't know, no thanks

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 20/05/2012 22:48

I take it you don't have a dog that would appreciate the spag Bol?

slowestwildebeast · 20/05/2012 23:53

dogs do not eat spag bol. that is awful.

squeakytoy · 20/05/2012 23:59

My dog loves a nice spag bol!

tazzle22 · 21/05/2012 00:02

It they are concientious enought to date the spag bol and its only been in there a month I see no issue at all with eating it .... usual rules applying as making sure its hot in the middle. ( over 73 degrees centigrade is you feel the need to check it Wink and all bugs will be dealt with).

Hebiegebies · 21/05/2012 00:06

Ah, but April of which year.........!

I'd eat it having just signed the SCF petition and been reminded of what I have that others dont

Hebiegebies · 21/05/2012 00:07

Oh, and my dogs love spaghetti Bol too

ravenAK · 21/05/2012 00:16

I'd definitely eat it. Simmering it for a half hour should kill off anything dubious about it. Presumably if someone serves you spag bol at their house you don't gack over it, so what's the difference - unless you actually know they are Life of Grime types who can't be trusted with a freezer!

(Actually being veggie, I'd give it to the cats, who'd be jolly grateful Grin)

slowestwildebeast · 21/05/2012 00:17

ridiculous letting your dog est spag bol.
how on earth do they twist the pasta in the spoon?

BonnieBumble · 21/05/2012 00:20

I would eat it because I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings not that they would know but I'm a little odd like that.

DaenerysTargaryen · 21/05/2012 00:30

God if theyre organised enough to date their frozen food then I'd say theyre nice clean people.

I always mean to date my freezer stuff (usually whilst trying and failing to remember when that particular piece of meat was frozen) but I never do.

People that organized simply must be hygienic

ravenAK · 21/05/2012 00:31

I reckon the dogs would manage.

bellissima

Hebiegebies · 21/05/2012 00:55

You can get electric forks that twist the pasta.....
