Does watching BGT or X factor make you working class - discuss

She is Lueji

They Royal Family is thought to be very naff

MadameMessy · 20/05/2012 15:24

Maybe probably but she's not "working class"

MrsBovary · 20/05/2012 15:29

Agree with toofat.

I find the talent shows very dull, that's all. The Voice (?) is the one everyone seems to be watching at the moment. Is that lower class too? Wink

'Dorothy' (can't recall programme title) was the last of those programmes I remember watching.

Graciescotland · 20/05/2012 15:32

I don't know what BGT is does that make me a toff?

Trestle · 20/05/2012 17:30

Yes

LemonTurd · 20/05/2012 19:58

Is The Voice less WC because it's on the BBC? Ditto Apprentice.

Latara · 20/05/2012 23:52

Nothing to do with social class i'm afraid...

Watching X Factor & BGT means that your Saturday night social life is, er, as rubbish as mine currently is (sob).

snappysnappy · 20/05/2012 23:54

Not but it does make you a time waster

Latara · 20/05/2012 23:55

Ps. I would be careful what you say about the Queen... you do know that she owns the Tower of London with those scary dungeons... don't you???

puffberto · 20/05/2012 23:55

Generally but not exclusively

CrispyCod · 21/05/2012 00:06

Anyone concerned with class is a complete tit IMO and needs to get a life. Why should you be judged by the tv you watch, papers you read etc.

Hebiegebies · 21/05/2012 00:08

Agree with snappy

puffberto · 21/05/2012 00:12

yes - lets make no judgements about others based on the way they live their lives. We're all a great big rainbow family.

SamuelWestsMistress · 21/05/2012 00:15

Oh anyone who ever watches ITV at all is a bit common. My husband and I study various literatures of an evening and encourage our children to do the same. If we feel like something a bit more thrilling we may play a game of billiards or rummikub or we may work on something more constructive like their posture.

Televisual entertainment is generally only permitted over the festive period and it is restricted to non commercial channels only.

startail · 21/05/2012 00:17

Yes, it's on ITV

CrispyCod · 21/05/2012 00:17

Or, we could have a middle class tv channel to which you have to subscribe. Applicants will be thoroughly checked to ensure they are suitably middle class otherwise no access is granted.

The working class channel will get Jeremy Kyle, what do middle class get to watch....Antiques Roadshow?

TheUnsinkableTitanic · 21/05/2012 06:45

lol re working class as being seen as a bad thing by the OP

i feel i am working class ie i work. a colleague thinks i am middle class ie 2 cars, detached house, skiing trip.

if i was middle class i would not be panicking about not being in my car and doing the 1 hour commute to work - hey ho!

and by the way YABU - discuss that :)

QueenEdith · 21/05/2012 06:52

"Anyone concerned with class is a complete tit IMO and needs to get a life"

Agreed, in terms of MN and threads like these.

In political terms, 'class denying' is a different matter, and one I would not support (dull, PO faced interlude, I know). Hazel Blears' comments on why New Labour was wrong to go in for class denial were fascinating.

Is it just me or does anyone else break out in itchy hives when some no mark OP ends their trying-so-hard post with 'discuss'?

swallowedAfly · 21/05/2012 08:18

other way round - being working class makes you watch this shite. basically itv with all it's attendant shite 'family' programming was launched for the working class at the time.

personally i just think it means you need a brain transplant Wink

Noddynomates · 21/05/2012 12:09

Watching probably does not make you working class provided you know it is all contrived

Voting probably makes you working class

However taking part would for certain

OP posts:
Fireandashes · 21/05/2012 12:12

Not strictly true, KitchenTiles - middle classes will admit to watching it "ironically", or call it a "guilty secret".
