to have reported dog in car?

Walking baby round the block today i noticed a little dog in a parked car, windows both open an inch or two. It was quite warm today, varying between overcast and full on sunshine, but everyone in tshirts etc.
Half an hour later i couldnt get this little dog out of my mind, thinking he must have been getting pretty hot pretty quickly in the car, so i drove round the block to check the car had gone.
Well he was still sat there so had been 30mins, plus however long possibly before i saw him the first time.
I called the local police and reported it, feel a bit busy body-ish but couldnt do nothing.
Am recently postnatal and a little unbalanced sensitive, am wondering if i was being ott or does it sound fair enough to have reported it?

YANBU. People never seem to learn, dogs die every year, and even when you think it's not hot, it bloody well is inside a car when the sun comes out.

You did the right thing.

GrimmaTheNome · 19/05/2012 21:26

Much better report it than not. Smile

nellyjelly · 19/05/2012 21:28

God no - definately did the right thing.

Debeez · 19/05/2012 21:28

YANBU. Even a little bit of sun can heat a car very quickly and as dogs don't sweat they pant to cool down, panting doesn't work as well if the air around them is warm. Not busy body-ish at all. You did a good thing.

NicNocJnr · 19/05/2012 21:29

YANBU - I'm a VN and totally agree you did the right thing. It's something people have some kind of blind spot over.

Having had to console many an owner who got to the surgery too late because 'it wasn't that sunny' I always do ring it in. It's better as well to let them be dealt with by the relevent people so you don't get an ear bashing.
It's a horrible death and it's a shame it needs to happen to some people's dogs before they'll listen.
if I never see another dog suffering like that it'll be too soon, sadly the next few months will be the worst. Particulrly if we get so-so weather and people get complacent.
Certainly not something to be feeling like a busy body over!

Can't spell today! This phone has a mind of it's own...I advised a friend to 'make them pee' yesterday instead of pay.

MeconiumHappens · 19/05/2012 21:42

"make them pee!" i like this !

Well done, you should feel proud of yourself. If only more people cared the way you do....

Mishy1234 · 21/05/2012 07:57

YANBU. You may well have saved that dog's life.

Bunbaker · 21/05/2012 08:00

You did the right thing. Although we only managed a maximum of 8 degrees on saturday Sad so it wouldn't have been an issue where we live.

holmesgirl · 21/05/2012 08:48

You did a good deed OP.

Paiviaso · 21/05/2012 08:55

YANBU!

Fireandashes · 21/05/2012 09:05

YADNBU. Good for you. Hope the little dog was okay.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 21/05/2012 09:15

You did the right thing, 30 minutes is far too long.

I'm jealous of your weather though. On the way to school this morning you could see my breath. In May. My breath. [disgusted]

samandi · 21/05/2012 09:18

YANBU. You should never leave a dog alone in a car, and leaving the window open a crack isn't much help against heat building up in a stationary car. The RSPCA advise people to call the police or their own contact number. PETA also advise you to stay at the scene if possible.

jubilucket · 21/05/2012 09:19

The warmth builds up inside a car amazingly fast even on a vaguely grey day. I sometimes have to leave dogs in the car for short periods, but by short I mean five minutes, not half an hour plus+! I'd have reported too.

minnisota · 26/05/2012 21:01

I reported someone today. There was a dog in the boot of a car in full sunlight in a retail park. I rang the RSPCA who asked lots of questions about the car including reg no. They then put a call out to both local RSPCA and the police. The owner came back after a further 10 minutes and drove off so I rang them back and they are going to follow it up with a call to the owner.

devonshiredumpling · 26/05/2012 21:04

good on you ThanksWine

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 26/05/2012 21:05

It has been between 18 and 28 degrees here lately - between 6am and 8pm.
I had to take one of my dogs out at 6 on Friday to Agility, I opened all the windows to try to cool the car down before we left, then had the aircon on to cool it further before she went in it. I was boiling, so she must have been cooking. Oh and outside temp said 26.5, so god knows what it was inside the car, despite the cool air.

Shutupanddrive · 26/05/2012 21:41

YANBU at all, you might have saved that little dogs life

VivaLeBeaver · 26/05/2012 21:47

My stupid mother left her dog in the car today and it's blazing hot. I told her she was stupid but she reckons it was ok as she parked under a tree and left all 4 windows down. I wasn't there but she wouldn't have left the windows fully down. Surprised the dog is still alive.
