Trapped nerve. Crying with tiredness and pain. Pain killers not working. Don't know what to do.

I know it's a bit of a stock answer, but could you try NHS Direct?

If you're asking whether your pain is enough to 'bother' them with, you sound at the end of your tether and it's what they're there for Smile

Don't know if a and e on a Friday night will help. If you can cope for a couple more hours and call out of hours number you will get much better service x

Wingedharpy · 19/05/2012 02:57

Either phone NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 and speak to a Nurse who may be able to offer you more advice regarding your pain killers or, phone your GP surgery and listen to the full message on the answer machine and then phone the on-call Doctor service who may be able to offer stronger pain relief.
The last place you would want to be when in agony and feeling wretched is an A and E department on a Friday night with all the drunks in your town.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

How are you getting on alpha?

thatisall · 19/05/2012 03:27

out of hours gp will be better than a and e on a friday night no?

alphabite · 19/05/2012 04:38

Have come downstairs as laying down was making it 10x worse. Am going to ring my chiropractor first thing this morning and will go to out of hours GP for strong painkillers. Have been sick as the pain is making me feel really ill.

Bloody hell you poor thing. It is horrible.

Sometimes I find lying on the floor better than on mattress? Have you doubled up painkillers eg paracetamol and ibuprofen at the same time (this is what I was recommended, it is safe as long as you adhere to the dosage instructions of each separate drug)

Hot and cold? Frozen peas / hand warmer thingy? Shower pointed at your back? Very hot bath with some lavender in it to help you try and relax?

You're nearly through to the morning now, I think A&E will be worse than useless as they won't prioritise you over all the drunks that need seeing back together urgently.

alphabite · 19/05/2012 05:02

Thanks Grumpla. Waiting for some of the stiffness to lesson and will then have a bath. Sadly laying and sitting are hurting me more and I don't have a shower so I'm not sure I'll ever get my skanky hair washed!

I wouldn't wish this kind of pain on anyone.

Ouch. You need a painkiller that targets nerve pain (e.g. amitriptyline or gabapentin). Normal painkillers don't work well for it, even strong ones. The OOH GP will be able to prescribe them.

Mama1980 · 19/05/2012 08:27

Hi I suffer with severe nerve pain in my pelvis and legs. I always find a and e if it gets very bad very sympathetic and they do a nerve block injection for me. Failing that (I've had a MRI etc etc) you need to call a dr and get them to prescribe better pain meds, and maybe anti inflammatory as well, over the counter generally won't work. I hope u feel better soon

CaptainHetty · 19/05/2012 08:31

Hope you managed to get some rest and some stronger painkillers. Poor thing, it sounds awful :(

alphabite · 19/05/2012 18:20

It has got better as the day has gone on and I even got an hours nap. I am dosed up on painkillers and have been eating junk food!

Thanks everyone.
