To report this shop?

Called in at a local shop today, it's a family run one- a bit grotty but generally ok. I bought a drink and some tic tacs. Later I got the tic tacs out of my bag and I noticed it said "win x factor tickets" on the front. I thought god that's a old competition, best check the date... Quite clearly there were scratch marks on the back where the date should be no where else just there! I could only make out a number 2. I know it's only trivial and I'm not that bothered it was out of date but I'm pissed off that they scratched it off rather than just leave it, AIBU to want to report the shop? No idea who too tho!

Wow Shock That's not good! I've no idea who you'd complain to either, but think you probably need to. Pretty certain the dates are legally meant to be there..

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2012 20:59

I wouldn't.

But I don't care about out of date Minty freshness.

And I also overly care about small shopkeepers making feck all money.

Feel free too if you want to obviously.

FeakAndWeeble · 18/05/2012 21:04

Check the bacon. Our local grotty shop was selling bacon last year with an expiry date of November 09 Shock

It was bright green. We took it up to the counter and they were totally disinterested. We reported. They were raided and closed down for this and for selling bootleg alcohol after a final warning. (We reported to Trading Standards by the way).

So anyway. Tic Tacs won't kill you but next time you're in there, have a squizz, check they're not selling anything else that could possibly give you botulism.

thisisyesterday · 18/05/2012 21:06

wow

i think i would report actually

there is a big difference between having out of date goods on the shelf because they don't sell and you just accidentally didn't notice, and deliberately obscuring the date in order to sell things that are out of date

like feakandweeble says, if they do it with tic tacs goodness only knows what else they do it with

juveen · 18/05/2012 21:13

It will only be a best before date not a use by date. The difference being something with an expired use by date eg meat or dairy could injure you the mints may be past their best but will cause you no harm. It's not even a criminal offence but it would be your local Environmental Health Dept not Trading Standards.

ragged · 18/05/2012 21:18

I wouldn't, not over a pack of tictacs.

hmc · 18/05/2012 21:21

I would report. You don't mess with use by / best before dates

Oh God it was horrible. Put me off bacon for at least half an hour ages.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 18/05/2012 21:39

It's clearly something they knew they were doing rather than an oversight. I wouldn't be too upset about tic tags but I'd be keeping an eye on absolutely everything else I bought from them.

DH bought some dilute juice from our local shop and it was absolutely foul when I had a taste. It was 10 months out of date. He went back and complained and they said that that was why they were selling it at a reduced price Hmm We didn't report them though.

Darkling · 18/05/2012 21:39

I would report it, you don't know what else they are up to, the corner shop where I used to live was caught switching off their fridges at night time to save electricity money, the fridges where all the milk and stuff they sold was Envy.

TiggyD · 18/05/2012 23:38

Sorry about your green bacon.
Was it real or just a fake-un?
Did you try to eat it green?
Was it fatty? Was it lean?
To test it you should have got some boys in
To see if it was full of poison.
It might be OK when you fry it.
Don't say you hate it until you try it!
Eat it up, give it a go.
If you die,
Don't reply
then we will all know.

BuntyPenfold · 18/05/2012 23:45

I don't think sell-by is reliable anyway, because a friend had a job in a Mr Kipling factory, and she was really shocked - they had a re-boxing area, where cakes not sent out soon enough are re-boxed into new boxes with a longer date on.
My friend was Shock but the staff just laughed at her and said they always do it.
So the dates don't mean a lot in any case.

thisisyesterday · 19/05/2012 09:56

it isn't really about wherther or not the dates mean anything though is it, or if out of date tic tacs are edible

the fact is this shop is deliberately destroying dates in order to sell old goods.
and if they are doing it with things other than sweets it could potentially be dangerous!

Grannylipstick · 19/05/2012 10:21

Why don't you just take them back to the shop. There may be a simple explanation.

flixy102 · 19/05/2012 10:25

Our local shop sells good past the BB date and makes sure there is a sign saying that and they are usualy mega cheap (BB dates mean just that, they are still safe to eat).

I would only report them if they are knowingly selling stuff that is past the use by date and that could make you ill if you eat it.

Definitely keep an eye out as this time it may just be a genuine mistake.

CrispyCod · 19/05/2012 11:10

I would report them to Environmental Health. EH will go and check them out and if anything it will give the shopkeeper a scare. If they're not doing anything dodgy then they have nothing to fear do they? Let EH have a poke round, that's what they're there for.

kid · 19/05/2012 11:11

I wouldn't care about the tictacs as I don't really think they could go stale. I wouldn't be happy about certain foods being out of date so I would check everything I bought from them.

PooPooInMyToes · 19/05/2012 11:25

If they do that with tictacs it makes you wonder what else they do! Its a deliberately act so i would report for that reason.

AmberLeaf · 19/05/2012 11:29

Out of date tic tacs wont make you ill, out of date bacon would.

I just made that judgement with a bit of knowledge and common sense.

I assume thats what the shopkeepers did too.

kid · 19/05/2012 11:34

I don't think they are allowed to sell out of date products, especially without informing the customer. Some shops will have a 'bargain bucket' or something with items that are almost of out date. I thought they had to be removed from sale once they are out of date though.

Loshad · 19/05/2012 11:37

It's the deliberateness of the act that is concerning.
