DS and I nearly died today. Thats the long and short of it. We were travelling down a local A road that i use very frequently. Travelling behind an open back builders type lorry carrying some timber legnths.... Which it turns out weren't secured Angry duly got caught by the crosswind and flew off directly towards my windscreen, thank the lord I managed to pull into the next lane (safely) as it would of hit my windscreen and more than likely come through, and at the very least caused me to crash. Im so proud of myself as ive not been driving long but Angry at the irresponsible idiot. I managed to catch his plate and called the police but doubt much will happen to the idiot. When i got off of the A road i was shaking and stopped and had a bloody big cry!

WIBU to go to the police? There was likely no malice intended but there was also a wheel barrow in the back ... I wonder if that had been secured?
Im pregnant and hormonal but cant help think anyone would of been angry!

YANBU. If he's carrying an unsecured or badly secured load he's committing a traffic offence. It's pretty serious stuff. Sorry you've had a scare.

CailinDana · 18/05/2012 12:48

Dear lord, I feel queasy just reading about that you poor thing. Yes, definitely go to the police. Did the timber fall on the road?

3teenhell · 18/05/2012 12:48

Yanbu to go to police what they were doing is dangerous and they need to be pulled about it.
Well done for avoiding and glad you and Ds are ok, you did well.
Its normal to be shaken up, even the smallest ding can shake you up

CogitoErgoSometimes · 18/05/2012 12:50

An unsecured load is classed as 'dangerous driving'... up there with driving on the wrong side of the road or having defective brakes. Really, report it because he shouldn't be on the road.

Empusa · 18/05/2012 12:51

Did he not realise and stop then? Shock

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 12:52

Ive already called the police given the licence plate, i then suddenly wondered if I'd over reacted, glad I've not! The idiot just left the timber in the road too! Didn't even stop! I really hope he gets done!

Glad you are both OK, YANBU to report it, a friend was in a similar situation and they were really shaken up. Don't let it put you off driving.

GnomeDePlume · 18/05/2012 12:55

Agree with all the others. I heard of a lorry driver losing a foot because the yard manager had decided to save time and money by only securing a heavy load with ropes rather than chains. First time the driver braked the load slipped forward through the cab.

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 12:57

Thanks glad it isnt my hormones Grin i promptly got out of the car and was sick! Envy luckily DS was fast asleep! I felt ok
Driving home but i did take a non Aroad route!
People just beggar belief!

Oh God, I hate driving behind those sort of trucks with stuff stacked up in the back. Horrible.

dixiechick1975 · 18/05/2012 13:24

Maybe try and contact health and safety executive aswell? Builders will have committed various health and safety at work offences - HSE can take action/prosecute even if police don't.

dixiechick1975 · 18/05/2012 13:25

hse.gov.uk

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 13:30

Oh thanks dixie i may give it a go, would i need to know the brand of builder as i didn't catch the sign writing?

OMg, I think I honestly would have needed clean pants if that had happened to me. You should report it, god knows that could have eneded so badly!

LadyBeagleEyes · 18/05/2012 13:37

Good on you for having the presence of mind to get the number plate.
I'm sure the police will look into to it.

dixiechick1975 · 18/05/2012 18:51

They should be able to trace them from the registration. The website info on the local offices - i'd be tempted to ring your nearest one.

Hope you are feeling ok now.

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 19:09

Thanks im ok now, yes i think i will as it could of been much worse

LRDtheFeministDragon · 18/05/2012 19:30

Oh, wow, that's terrifying! Sad

Well done you for pulling over - that is impressive. I would be still shaking now.

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 20:06

I have to thank the guy in the next lane, he saw what was happening whacked the hazards on and slowed for me, its fair to say i owe him my life however dramatic that sounds. To be honest I'm just thankful to put my DS to bed safe and happy, and to go to bed still pregnant.

AnneTwacky · 18/05/2012 20:18

YANBU. You've done the right thing.

As it's a lorry, I'm guessing VOSA will get involved so more will probably come of your call then you'd think.

Glad you and DS are ok.

SCOTCHandWRY · 18/05/2012 20:23

Go to the police. Years ago I worked with my parents haulage company, and had to learn a lot of legal stuff - I can assure you that proper securing of the load was very serious stuff - huge fines can be levied against both drivers and their employer for improperly secured materials - precisely because people can and do die as a result.

You had a lucky escape, hope you are feeling ok now, it must have been a real shock.

SCOTCHandWRY · 18/05/2012 20:25

Whoops, read the rest of the thread and I see you already went to the police!

BBisTitanium · 18/05/2012 20:29

Thanks it wasnt a large lorry as such more of an open backed van? Like you see in american cowboy films... Pr outback murder-ey ones!! Its the type they use for scrap lorries round here. The wood was actually too long so was balanced diagonally on the drivers cab down to the tail gate.. Like the sloping side of a triangle? Id say they were amateur at best.. May even of been a private vehicle i suppose! But given the stuff in the back id imagine a small builders firm or handyman.

I just hope it was an accident not negligent laziness!
