to feel rather unsettled by this conman?

Yesterday a man appeared on my doorstep, addressed me by name and told me that we were in arrears with one of the utilities companies, and that he was here to collect as little or as much as I could pay, and would be back the same time every week. No shame involved, I was just one of 70 houses in the area he visits on this basis.

Tbh, it's not the sort of thing I would know off the top of my head, so I asked him for some paperwork - he said he couldnt give me anyway, but did give me a postcard on which he handwrote what he said we owed - over £400. the card had a nice logo of the utility company he said he represented, and a message about looking out for bogus callers.

The man was scarily plausible and very persistent. Eventually I had to say that I couldnt pay anything til I'd spoken to my husband, so he left. (Obv I wouldnt have paid anything anyway, just wanted to get rid of him).

So I called the company and surprise surprise, we dont owe them anything. I've told the police about the conman and they want to come and see me although they cant say when that would be (was supposed to be within an hour yesterday - now they say not til next week).

The thing is, we are quite isolated - house is down a track, there are neighbours along the track but once you get here no one could see you. I've always mostly left the front door open so the dog could wander in and out at will, but am going to keep it locked now.

DH says bloke will not come back, his scam didnt work and not to worry, but I just feel on edge, and maybe he was casing the joint for a burglary or something? The man has discovered that I am here alone during the day and that the dog is not exactly burglar-eating material...

So AIBU to feel a bit anxious, am I just being a wuss?

spoke to company, we are definitely not in arrears and they are sending me a cheque for the amount we are in credit (result!)

they DO use the company named on man's nametag but they have not instructed them in our case. the woman I spoke to is referring the details to their internal fraud collections dept.

I think it is a scam rather than a mistake... I think he may be either retired/redundant and has pinched a lot of names and addresses before leaving, or its a fiddle on the side.

if it was legit, he would have had paperwork with him, and I would have received some through the post and had to sign an agreement to pay like this - but it wouldnt have got that far of course, because we are in CREDIT.

how weird

OddBoots · 14/06/2012 17:03

How scary for you.

I do have a camera at the door which takes pictures when it senses movement, that probably seems over the top but it has made me feel more secure and also helps me see who it is before I go to the door.

noblegiraffe · 14/06/2012 20:29

I'd ask for his name, say 'excuse me while I phone your company to check you're legit' then leave him on the doorstep while I googled the number and phoned.

If they're a scammer, they'd clear off at that point I expect.

Pixieonthemoor · 15/06/2012 16:51

Next time he pitches up, you need to say very firmly "I am sorry but I have checked up on our account with X company you say you are from. We are NOT in arrears so either you have been misinformed or are trying to con me. Please leave my property NOW as I am going to shut the door and call the police immediately.". Make sure you have bouncy lab at your side. Bloody cheek!!

NicNocJnr · 15/06/2012 17:48

oh goodness Boschy, what a pair he has to come back so brazenly!

You are 100% correct thought this is a scam - he just has balls. Do not doubt yourself!! I'm slightly concerned at the number of pps querying his con status just down to a photoshopped ID badge and some faked postcards this is why it's worth having another go.

V impressed at your presence of mind getting name/reg plate etc and spreading the word! You never know, you may have just saved some poor, vulnerable person from being harrassed into handing over money they can't spare and being left scared and confused at how they will cope paying this 'debt' off. If you think about how much he could gain from this it absolutely is worth it for him.
I hope the police can give you an update for your piece of mind.

On a slight tangent both my dogs are trained so that they bark/bodyslam the door and then block a 'visitor' until I tell them to quiet and go to the lounge/kids/bed whatever. I'm not a weak and feeble woman that needs a man around to feel safe but I have had people trying to force their way into the house or pressure me into handing money or card details over - one occasion bigger dog ran full tilt through the house and met the bugger that was trying to open my french windows very quietly- 12 stone of rapidly travelling canine persuaded him not to more eloquently than I probably could have tbh.. Neither dog would hurt a fly (unless some fool laid a hand on the kids) but no-one else needs to know it's just a load of noise and they prefer to be in a heap getting belly rubs. I'm sure people won't approve but I've had close enough calls for it to be worth it.

Thanks Sorry for you it is very frightening especially when isolated.

shewhowines · 15/06/2012 20:15

any more info from the police?

Shutupanddrive · 15/06/2012 20:48

Oh my god how scary. I live in a similar set up and don't always lock my doors. I will from now on though

Hyperballad · 15/06/2012 20:56

I think you need what Old Boots has, you can set this up to email/text you the photo the camera takes, most the time we see the end of a cats tail, or fox but its handy when there is someone at the door!!

Glad you had the dog with you, they are brilliant arn't they Smile

RightBuggerforit · 15/06/2012 21:21

What a cheeky (and thick) sod! Well done for getting all that info reported, they should definately be able to get him for it now.
