AIBU? Am I overreacting? Cheryl Cole interview on radio (possible rant)

FeedingTheBirds · 17/05/2012 20:23

Am not a prolific poster but just heard this interview with her on local radio and it is eating away at me.

Local radio station but I think they have many other "local" radio stations around the country, her interview can apparently be heard at www.indemand.fm. Don't know how to link - sorry.

She was discussing an upcoming possible duet with Rhianna and they got onto the subject of Chris Brown. Cheryl said that because Rhianna had publicly (sp?) forgiven Chris B that the rest of "us" should also. She went onto say that him being in the public eye made it harder for him and that through "her charity" she had met lots of reformed characters who had done "bad things and been in prison" and they were now upstanding members of the community.

I can't help thinking quite ferociously that she has said something quite silly. I know that 10 years ago when I was plucking up the courage to leave violent ex husband that hearing something like that might have made me think, hang on maybe he CAN reform and be a lovely pillar of the community and stayed and suffered for it. At that time I wouldn't have thought to myself I wonder how many violent men actually DO change their ways. I still do not know the statistics but I am betting it is fairly low.

Am I overthinking this? I am more than tempted to write to the radio station or in fact the company who own the various radio stations because I think she has said something stupid and potentially dangerous for many many vulnerable women. (Not sure what response I would expect if I even did contact them). Very unsure and as I have said, possibly overthinking.

I think Cheryl Cole is a terrible role model for young girls.

FeedingTheBirds · 17/05/2012 21:04

I am crap at AIBU aren't I! Have agreed with everyone and been super polite to those I disagree with.

If you are in a dilemma with someone you think you love, of course you will be influenced by the culture around you.

These slebs should just fuck off and take their idiotic views with them.

Heyyyho · 17/05/2012 21:07

I think
You Are bang on actually.
She just said it because she is violent herself.

2shoes · 17/05/2012 21:09

i do wonder why that air head is taken seriously by anyone

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 17/05/2012 21:13

I realise that she is likely to influence people, but I don't think we can censor every thick celebrity just in case someone somewhere is going to take them seriously and make descisons that have a negative impact on their lives because of a few minutes worth of interview.

It comes back to free speech. We all have that right in this country, whether or not we talk drivel is irrelevant.

manicbmc · 17/05/2012 21:15

Can we just censor her then? She's an idiot and, living where I do, I get a bit fed up with the idol status she has here.

FeedingTheBirds · 17/05/2012 21:18

Have to go to work now. Am glad I appear to be not COMPLETELY fucked up and OTT about everything that I see or hear. Or am i?! Confused.

Maybe post my ranty email tomorrow and get flamed for each and every badly spelled word!

Thanks all.

agree with you OP, but I too think it's because she can hardly criticise soemone else for violence.
And I don't think it's regularly dragged up by the media at all - she's the nations sweetheart, everyone loves her. The only place I see it mentioned any more is on MN, and a lot less since UQD left :o

FeedingTheBirds · 17/05/2012 21:19

Would like to censor all these gobshites idiots but I don't think I will be allowed. Smile

LineRunner · 17/05/2012 21:21

I know that freedom of speech is sacrosanct. But why the fuck do media shows book these awful people? Is it that cynical, that the shows will exploit their very stupidity?

And in turn potentially damage others?

Well, what we can do is object. That's our freedom of speech.

JojoLapin · 17/05/2012 21:25

What she refers to as "her charity" is the Prince's Trust... The mind boggles!!!

L'Oreal Paris is associated with the charity. She is a UK spokesperson for the company and they got her to chose the shade of ONE lipstick. Some of the proceeds from the sale of that product goes (went?) to the PT. It does not make it "her charity"... Time for a reality check.

The sad thing is that while we may all agree that she is a very poor role model, the reality is that she makes cosmetic products fly off the shelves. She'll be around until it dries out...

AnyFucker · 17/05/2012 22:16

The Big haired Batterer who is a violent thug herself is sticking up for domestic abusers ?

No shit

Rhinestone · 17/05/2012 22:48

Do not call our sweetheart a racist though, ooh no. She merely called the nightclub attendant a 'bitch' as she (Cheryl) repeatedly punched her in the face. She absolutely categorcally denied calling her a 'black bitch'. So that's ok then.

How she avoided a prison term I do not know.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 17/05/2012 22:55

Were you in court during the trial Rhinestone?

PropertyNightmare · 17/05/2012 23:01

I think she has her own criminal conviction so probably has a vested interest in advising that we are quick to forgive offenders. Nice Hmm

wannabeamillionaire · 17/05/2012 23:29

oh for fucks sake really !!!!! she is in celeb life hopefully you are in the real one. Get a grip why would you even worry about this, there is nothing you can do about it. why do a AIBU on a celeb ????????

wannabeamillionaire · 17/05/2012 23:31

rhinestone: repeatedly punched her in the face... I dont think so love

JosephineCD · 17/05/2012 23:50

I heard she called her a word beginning with J.

manicbmc · 18/05/2012 00:57

She is a talentless chav who has some money now. But money can't buy you class.

If she hadn't got into Girls Aloud she'd be JK fodder.

SodoffBaldrick · 18/05/2012 08:21

YANBU.

And as an aside, I am extraordinarily wary of anyone who accuses other people of 'over-thinking' something. People who don't question and think about things, and actively discourage others from doing so are weird, IMO.

AnnaFender · 18/05/2012 08:30

I saw an advert on TV yesterday that had a voiceover lady talking about celebrity gossip and in amongst other things, in a cheerful tone, she said "Should Rihanna get back with Chris Brown?". It really annoyed me because it was so flippant. Add to that opinions like Cheryl Cole's being spouted on the radio and a few months back when Natalie Cassidy went on this morning to talk publicly about how she was taking back her partner after a DV incident, what message is being sent out to young people?

YANBU, it is such a serious issue and needs to be portrayed as such in the media where possible.

StealthPolarBear · 18/05/2012 08:37

Completely agree AF

knowotumean · 18/05/2012 08:41

OP you're not fucked up and ranty. It takes a lot if courage sometimes to speak up and challenge something you think is unjust- its especially difficult to find the words when you've been through a related experience and the emotions are still raw. Its difficult to get the words down without "beating yourself up"--about being too this- too that- too emotional. Its too easy to censor ourselves when we believe passionately about something and should be speaking out. SO GOOD ON YOU.

knowotumean · 18/05/2012 08:43

SodoffBaldrick-I didn't see your post before but that is exactly what I think when I hear people who dismiss with the words "I think you're over-thinking it".
