To think Gateau Diane should be brought back?

My Mum used to make this for our birthday's in the 80's but it seems that it's become just a footnote in the annals of pudding history. It's the most bloody delicious thing ever!

Chocolate pavlova, mmm, mmm, mmm.

Tell me there's someone out there that still makes it?

What other recipes have been unjustly left behind?

I used to like those packets mixes for Saucy Sponge. Yummy!

Olympia2012 · 16/05/2012 17:38

I only remember steak Diane!

CharlieUniformNovemberTango · 16/05/2012 17:40

I used to love those hot crunch puddings that were like a banana of chocolate custard and then crunchy biscuity sprinkles you put on top.

Never had gateau Diane but now I really want some!

Another vote here from the custardy puddings- I tried to create one recently with packet custard and digestives. Not bad, but not as good.

CremeEggThief · 16/05/2012 17:47

Never heard of it. Care to share a recipe?

vixsatis · 16/05/2012 17:49

YANBU- as per the recipe in those 1970s cordon bleu books

Doodlekitty · 16/05/2012 17:49

My ex's mam used to make an amazing gateaux Diane. I loved it! Was the worst part of breaking up with him, knowing I would not have it again

ProcrastinateWildly · 16/05/2012 17:51

looks easy!

squoosh · 16/05/2012 17:51

Thanks for the links. I'm curious about trying this now and it looks as if even I could make it. :o.

suburbandream · 16/05/2012 18:14

oooh yes, Saucy Sponge that was always a treat Grin. I was in Sainsbos the other day and bought some of those Rhubarb and custard sweets, reminded me of childhood puddings when we really did have rhubarb and custard. And those sponge puddings in a tin that used to boil away on the hob for ages - with evaporated milk Smile

ReneandGeorgetteMagritte · 16/05/2012 18:19

there's a very similar pudding in Nigella's domestic goddess gooey chocolate stack but the meringue is chocolate.

It's yummy

bigkidsdidit · 16/05/2012 18:22

My mum used to make it with piped cream blobs around the edge, with a malteser balanced on each blob :)

If we were good and went to sleep when she was having a dinner party we'd have a slice of it for breakfast. It was GREAT

ramblinrose · 16/05/2012 18:35

Thank You so much to those who have mentioned Saucy Sponge
I was thinking about it the other day, but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called.
I think they made a cherry flavour. It was gorgeous!

Was searching for the recipe today, so will add it here!

4 egg white meringue, 2oz of caster sugar to each fluid oz of egg white, make into 3 rounds or rectangles (depending on serving plate shape) of meringue and bake

chocolate cream
8oz of dark chocolate melted into 4 fluid oz of water, leave to cool
lightly whip 1 pint of double cream, fold in the chocolate water when cream nearly at spreading consistency

to assemble
start with a tablespoon of chocolate cream (to anchor meringue) then layer meringue then cream, cover the whole thing with chocolate cream, decorate with chocolate curls or whatever your choice and allow to sit for an hour or 2 (preferably in the fridge), leftovers (haha) can be frozen and eaten like ice cream.

assemble
