to be surprised to see this in our cosy little local gift shop?

Local high street has a nice little giftshop that sells candles, scarves, pottery etc. Passed by this morning to see the new window display prominently featured a couple of "quirky" posters, one of which said "If a lady says no,she means perhaps. If she says perhaps, she means yes. If she says yes,she ain't no lady!" Am I being a bit over-sensitive to find it inappropriate?

YANBU. It's horrible.

Glitterkitten24 · 16/05/2012 15:19

YANBU that's horrible!

CommunistLegoBloc · 16/05/2012 15:20

What the actual jeff?

WTF is the point of trying to explain that no means no when stupid things like this perpetuate a myth that actually women probably mean something else and it's therefore okay to have sex with them?

Oh and if they do consent to sex then they're just slags. Brilliant. Hmm

medievalgirl · 16/05/2012 15:21

I don't suppose most rape victims would find it very funny.

Annunziata · 16/05/2012 15:21

Definitely not over-sensitive!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 16/05/2012 15:22

It's vile....and I am pretty laid back about most things! talk about trivialise a really important matter.....I would be in there asking them to take it down!

CommunistLegoBloc · 16/05/2012 15:25

Yes, I think you should go in there and tell them exactly why that's not the sort of image they should want to be promoting, and to take it down. I'd march in there in a heartbeat.

MordecaiAndTheRigbys · 16/05/2012 15:27

Isnt that the "joke" about the lady and the diplomat?

Either way, its not fucking funny. If you can, get in there and tell them take it down. Otherwise a letter maybe?

sue52 · 16/05/2012 15:30

Horrible. I'd go in and loudly point out the error of their ways. Not in any way shape or form is this remotely funny.

Clawdy · 16/05/2012 15:32

Was wondering if it was a quote or "joke" Mordecai. Feel as if I might go in tomorrow and say something now. Wonder what the response would be? Oddly, the owner is a mum in her thirties.

QueenOfF1amingEverything · 16/05/2012 15:33

God that is vile.

I'd go and say something.

medievalgirl · 16/05/2012 15:34

And who on earth would buy this poster??

I can't believe someone sat in an office somewhere and thought 'Hey, I've got a great idea for another poster. I'll design one that trivialises rape and implies consenting women are sluts.'

ThatGhastlyWoman · 16/05/2012 15:35

If they won't remove it, report to the local paper, and pose for a 'Disgusted Local Resident' photo for the front page. That's truly, truly vile.

Atreegrowsinbrooklyn · 16/05/2012 15:39

Have you spoken to them about it?

rustygusset · 16/05/2012 15:40
Shock
LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/05/2012 15:52

That is horrible!

I suppose they think it's 'just' a bit of old-fashioned sexism ('just' Hmm). I hope they're mortified when they realize that, to most of us, it immediately reads as a rape myth. Sad

Clawdy · 17/05/2012 12:59

Went in this morning and had word with the assistant. Oddly enough the entire shop is owned and staffed by women. Another customer was listening and she agreed with me,as did the assistant when she looked at it. She removed it at once. Result!

OP posts:
CrispyCod · 17/05/2012 13:02

If you read it in context to perhaps shopping or eating cake etc is could be humourous but as a stand alone sign which could refer to anything then it's pretty out of order imo and like other posters have said, gives out the wrong message.

Frontpaw · 17/05/2012 13:07

Good for you for actually speaking to them about it! I am glad they listened to you.

savoycabbage · 17/05/2012 13:22

Well done Clawdy.
