P&G Olympian mothers advert

I quite like this advert, sentimental but it thought it was nice.

A friend of mine thinks that in this day and age it is awful that such an advert was ever made and that it portrays an offensive view of a mother's role sitting on the sidelines and doing laundry.

I am interested in your opinions and have name changed so I can crawl away and hide if it is similarly slated here.

Apologies for typos, I'm on my phone.

I agree with you about the advert being sentimental but it made me well up too.

The whole "P&G - proud sponsor of Mums" schtick irritates me though. What about the Dads? They too sit on the sidelines - oh, but of course THEY don't do laundry so no point honouring them if you are trying to flog washing powder....

NoraFatimaBuffet · 16/05/2012 13:55

Hmm. The utter bollocks at the end about 'proud sponsor of Mums' had me gnashing my teeth. They don't 'sponsor' mums, they sell household products! Otherwise I would be ringing up asking where to apply for my fat wad of sponsorship money! :) And any advert that reinforces the Mum= sole responsibility for chores message is a Bad Thing. I would be pissed off if I was a father who does these things for his family.
I'm not sure, even with all this, why it enrages me. Probably because 'the hardest job in the world' acknowledgement is patronising marketing nonsense that will make absolutely no positive difference to the way 'women's work' is perceived when the whole ad just reinforce the stereotype. And now I'm going to have a lie down and wipe the froth from my lips Grin

x-posted with oranges there, too busy frothing to post quicker! Grin

I think that the mothers (rather then fathers) thing is something to do with the build up to Mothers' Day in the States but do agree that fathers should be included too.

Yes, as a commercial it is obviously trying to give vibes of positivity about their products too and assumes mothers are the shoppers ...... I feel I'm digging myself a hole now.

Well I'm a Mum

So if they're claiming to sponsor me, I'll expect the sponsorship money to be paid directly into my bank account Wink

Amiteallystupid · 16/05/2012 14:14

Unfortunately it appears they mostly sponsor the moms of American Olympians; they are giving them all money so they can come to London and watch their children compete.

Laundry detergent ads and cleaning ads frequently piss me off as they're all aimed at the female of the species generally speaking.

I also noticed that according to advertisers it's only us females who get constipated!

AWomanCalledHorse · 16/05/2012 14:23

P&G - proud sponsor of Mums...and not so proud testers of animals.
Sentimental tosh shite.

I like what Norma wrote!
