Do you style your kids hair?

I don't. AIBU?

He's only 18mo but I see loads of other kids his age with gel, mohicans, pointy bits at the front, spikes and what not. Am I doing him a disservice letting him go natural? I brush it and that's it, its even cut by me - not great but def not badly.

Is he going to look back at his baby pics and WTF MUM!!! Why did you let me look like that? (which is what I often say to my mum!) Grin

Didn't we all say that when we looked back on our baby pics? Grin

The difference nowadays is the poor little feckers will be saying "Mum, why did you splash my bad haircuts all over Facebook?"

BunnyLebowski · 15/05/2012 10:22

DD is 3 and the extent of my styling is brushing it and tying it up in a ponytail or plaits.

I can't bear seeing wee babies with 'done' hair. Especially baby girls with <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=baby+girl+ponytail&um=1&hl=en&biw=1680&bih=925&tbm=isch&tbnid=TD085_hhJoOvOM:&imgrefurl=www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/1660R-31081&docid=KAypEQ7mVwzZ9M&imgurl=wwwdelivery.superstock.com/WI/223/1660/PreviewComp/SuperStock_1660R-31081.jpg&w=350&h=350&ei=yB-yT5TpHYe_8gPIkbGdCQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=254&sig=109041736700743700156&page=1&tbnh=130&tbnw=129&start=0&ndsp=49&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:70&tx=59&ty=54" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">onion tops and 5 sparkly pink clips. Vom.

As far as boys go. As long as it's clean and he can see ok what more is needed? Smile

Yankeecandlequeen · 15/05/2012 10:23

No I don't. Its just......there! Girls are not girly but both have long straight hair always in ponytails & will not do anything else with it. DS's hair is short & tidy.......and that is that!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 15/05/2012 10:26

My girls (8 & 5) get their hair brushed, put in plaits for school or have a pretty hair clip or band other times, sometimes a pony tail or bunches. But as for styling it no!

At 18 months how can you style a baby boy's hair anyway, they have such soft lovely hair all you need to do is brush it.

househippo · 15/05/2012 10:27

I don't because I can't
But I have many friends how come to the school gate with their DCs hair all done up.
However by the end of the day most of their good work is ruined. Grin

knittynoodle · 15/05/2012 10:27

I'm pleased with these responses. Feeling more normal now. I don't even use conditioner on him! Shock

DD is 5yo and has her hair braided or in a french plait for school for two reasons: it's out of the way; it reduces the chance of getting nits.

DS is only 8mo but I can't imagine I'll be styling his hair at any point.

ChippyMinton · 15/05/2012 10:30

Never did when they were younger. Now the boys choose their cut (one has short-ish, the other more Justin Beiber) but don't use product. DD wears it long and does it herself - ponytails, plaits, half-up, whatever the latest class craze.

ShatnersBassoon · 15/05/2012 10:33

No, no styling, just a quick comb through.

I cut their hair myself too. What laughs we'll have when they look back at photos and wonder when we stopped being Amish.

knittynoodle · 15/05/2012 10:34

This is how you style a baby boys hair

Or at least that's how my friends do it! Confused

3yo DD has hair like Edward Scissorhands.

Trying to style it is like putting deckchairs out on the Titanic. So no.

MoodyNagoo · 15/05/2012 10:37

My DS has his hair styled.

with bubbles in the bath Wink

I seem to spend longer styling 8yo DDs hair than my own these days.

The latest craze for the girls in her class seem to be complicated twists and plaits that go all round the head.

I'm happy to do it though cos at least it means it gets brushed daily which it didn't before this craze

pictish · 15/05/2012 10:40

I just had my 3 year old daughter's hair from right down her back, to a short sharp bob. I got fed up with the crying over brushing and styling.
She looks very sweet with her little do - and I simply brush through it now, which she barely notices.
The boys have short crops.

I have short hair too.

I guess I cba with hair.

moonbells · 15/05/2012 10:42

Mine just has a simple pudding-bowl/Christopher Robin haircut. Went to a few barbers but they've never got it right - insisted on layering, so back to home hairdos we went. Need the long hair at the sides to cover up his wingnut Prince of Wales ears! But it suits him.

Styling def a non-starter.

pictish · 15/05/2012 10:43

I loved styling dd's hair (nothing elaborate) but she disagreed. At 3 she doesn't care what her hair looks like, and it was more for my benefit than hers.
I don't regret giving her the chop. It looks thicker and better and takes no effort at all.

claireinmodena · 15/05/2012 10:49

I wouldnt bother too much, but onion topa are really cute!

I used to do it to keep hair off my dds' faces as hairclips only lasted a couple of seconds before the were pulled out!

claireinmodena · 15/05/2012 10:49

Tops, not topa

KellyElly · 15/05/2012 11:01

My daughter is 2.5 and I don't bother as she pulls out whatever clips, hairbands etc I put in after about 5 seconds :)

zoflora · 15/05/2012 11:01

No

LolaThePregnantFlyola · 15/05/2012 11:06

onion tops make heave!, DS is 18 months i trim his hair away from his eyes but its curly and gorgeous, my nephew has a comb over as do most people in Essex/east London inflict on small boys along with tight Ralph Lauren and Barbour jackets.

RomyMadison · 15/05/2012 11:10

I wouldn't style a child hair that's under the age of 3 and at that i wouldn't put any product in their hair. I'd use clips or bobbles or a cute hair band and for a boys hair I'd just keep it trimmed and use a brush.

simperingsally · 15/05/2012 11:20

my 3 yo dd usually has an 'onion top'. where im from we call them coconut trees.
Its to keep her long fringe out of her eyes as she dosent have much hair anyway.

DeWe · 15/05/2012 11:24

I do the girls' hair as it's long and they're at school. It's a good day if I remember to comb out ds' hair. He however thinks it's a good day. Grin
