to be hacked off with the new parking policy at our ASDA

It costs 50p to park there for 3 hours, money returned with your receipt etc etc... But now the machines no longer take 10 or 5ps, so basically you have to have a 50p coin or overpay, which is blatantly what they're aiming for. Moneygrabbing bastards

Wish they'd introduce this at my local Sainsburys. It's a nightmare to find parking as people park there for free parking and hop across the road to the shopping centre. I'd welcome it

sockmonkey · 15/05/2012 11:26

it's £1 at our adsa for 2 hours, which you get back off your shopping.
Although no-one patrols at night so if I don't have a £1 coin I just risk it.
It's a pain!

klaxon · 15/05/2012 11:32

Actually OP you should write to the council. They will have had as part of the planning permission a requirement that they provide free parking to users of the store and they are not doing it. Personally I would park, not pay and then ask them to identify where you can park for free when they fine you as that is what they agreed to when they built the store and anything else would be an infringement of the planning rules.

ineedabodytransplant · 15/05/2012 15:28

Our local Asda tries to charge at least a £1 to park. I have never ever paid this. What are they going to do? They can't force you to pay unless they fit barriers. If they deign to send a parking invoice(not a fine by the way) just ignore it.

OrmIrian · 15/05/2012 15:30

Ours is a pound, but the same principle. Although Asda's car park is much bigger than the one it replaced and it was always a pay and display, so in fact it's a better system.

LaTristesse · 15/05/2012 15:37

Interesting Klaxon thanks!

I think they have folk wandering about checking you've displayed the ticket. I assumed as it was private land this was still legally enforceable...?

It's not the charge I object to, it is reasonable after all, it's the stealth tactic of not accepting some coins so many people will have to overpay. Yes now I'll need a £1 for the trolley and 50p for the carpark. Roll on the end of mat leave then I can go back to Ocado

it's just all sorts of wrong isn't it. imagine having to plan ahead and organise yourself so that you have 50p. i mean who has time for that. nobody i tell you. everyone will boycott. teh shop will shut down in a month.

or they'll just get 50p and keep it in the car and whinge about more important things.

porcamiseria · 15/05/2012 16:58

I just went to a Tesco rght by the sea

and 2 days before I paid 50P to parl elsewhere, not knowing I could have parked for free in the Tesco

you live and learn

EssexGurl · 15/05/2012 16:58

It is £3 at our Sainsburys which you get back when you spend £5. They will take it off the bill when you pay or if you take your receipt to customer services you get the cash. I go to CS every time and keep the £3 in the car so I always have it there. Makes life so much easier!

UnChartered · 15/05/2012 17:00

at our out of town retail park it's free to park and there's an asda AND matalan

no river or ocean though

i'd pay £3 to park at the ocean

Quenelle · 15/05/2012 17:02

One near us is £3. Who has £3 in change?

UnChartered · 15/05/2012 17:03

me, i do!

Quenelle · 15/05/2012 17:13

Ooh, ta.

UnChartered · 15/05/2012 17:18
porcamiseria · 15/05/2012 17:19

go to Isle of Sheppey, beachside parking for free!

its a fucking shithole though

UnChartered · 15/05/2012 17:20

excuse me, i was counting then porca
starts again

Quenelle · 15/05/2012 17:21
HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 15/05/2012 17:23

I have no Asda but I do have a lake
The lake has no parking, well unless you are an Alpaca, you can park an Alpaca there. And I assume for free as I haven't seen one with a clamp on yet.

AmandinePoulain · 15/05/2012 17:29

I have to pay £1.05 to park at work, the machine doesn't give change and discriminates against the wrong sort of 5ps. It doesn't like the new ones and sometimes randomly spits out old ones too. It also prefers me to put in the 5p before the £1 otherwise refuses to accept anything. And it hates 50p coins. Whoever thought that £1.05 was a good amount to charge me for the pleasure of using an unmanned, unsecured car park with lights that only come on in the day time deserves someone to come and try inserting 5ps into them.

smokinaces · 15/05/2012 17:50

Are you by any chance in Nw Kent? In which case I saw this the other day, stuck my 10p in and Lo and behold it accepted it fine.......

BigHairyFlowers · 15/05/2012 20:28

I am now worried that I am living in the Wrong Postcode, as all the supermarkets here have free parking Confused

wildspinning · 15/05/2012 21:05

"Paying for the asda is pure wrong"

Am in near-hysterics about this quote. I've had a long and difficult day Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/05/2012 21:07

I keep 10p and 20p coins in a jar to pay for parking .I won't use a 50p or higher because that's real money not change.
And as for the Dartford Crossing/Dartford Bridge...it was £1 until they paid off the construction bill. Now it's £1.50 Confused Utter con but cheaper than driving right round the m25.

ScaredyDog · 15/05/2012 21:15

I think I can explain this.

The royal mint has recently changed the way they make 5ps and 10ps.

The new ones are thicker - so all machines (including parking ticket machines) need to be recalibrated. This may be why the machines at your store no longer accept these coins.

I would write to them and ask why, and when they are going to get it sorted.

As for planning permission having to include free parking - Klaxon I've never heard of that.

Don't know if it's a new thing, but all of the car parks near our local supermarket you have to pay for as they belong to the council, not the store.

LaTristesse · 15/05/2012 21:26

Thanks Scaredy, mystery solved! I take back the assumption they were trying to cream off a little more cash...
