I had the contraceptive implant in my arm 7 months ago. I have had no end of problems. I have been emotional to the point of depression (suffered one with dd and it was like that) can't loose weight but worst of all I had a swelling in my breast and had to have a scan. Thankfully it was clear, but the consultant put these things down to the implant. So tonight I am going to Drs to have it removes. It hurt like fuck when they put it in, I am imagining its going to be painful to have it removed? Anyone had one removed and it was a wonderful psi free experience?

I had one removed, If I remember correctly, them numbed my arm and it was fine, no where near as bad as it going in.

McHappyPants2012 · 14/05/2012 18:00

For me the injection was the worst part it stung like hell, after that it was ok.

EmpireBiscuit · 14/05/2012 18:00

I had one removed a couple of years ago. Tbh I was that pleased to get rid of it they could have cut my arm off if required.

Seriously though, it wasn't sore that I remember but takes marginally longer than getting it put in.

NicNocJnr · 14/05/2012 18:02

I haven't had one so can't comment. But if you had problems with pain when it was inserted can you request topical anaesthetic, like Emla cream, before they remove it. I imagine they would be using something topical as it isn't like the quick large bore needle used for insertion.

I'm sorry it's caused so many issues. I would focus on how much better you will feel with it gone though.

I had a coil fitted as I have problems with hormonal contraception, been so much better than other options for me. I hope you find something that suits you and doesn't make you feel rubbish x

NicNocJnr · 14/05/2012 18:03

Injection? You get a proper local then so no worries!

NicNocJnr · 14/05/2012 18:04

Oh, btw asking them to warm the local before injection can reduce the stinging a little bit rather than just room temp. We always hold it in our hot little hands for a minute or two.

blapbird · 14/05/2012 18:06

My sister threatened to cut hers out her self if they didn't remove it straight away, she turned into a wreck, hormonal contraception isn't for sensitive souls.

I hope you feel better soon, condoms aren't so bad good luck Smile

DPrince, although you're going through this it gives me a sense of validation. I got mine inserted years ago while with a particularly nasty partner, and it turned me loopy, for want of a better word. I would be out having a nice evening, then one thing would affect me and I would be in tears. I was down and miserable all the time. He made me feel unstable and irrational, but deep down I knew it was the bloody implant! I also couldn't shift any weight and I actually put a load on.

I had mine taken out and went onto the injection. It;s not perfect, but a lot better.

Unfortunately it does hurt a little getting taken out, you know it does....but only the injection, after that it's numb. And it's worth it!

Dh is having the snip next month. Yay - his idea. Thanks I can't wait to have it out which is why I am not chickening out. :)

I have an appt to get mine out on Wed. Sid the pain I just want the thing out. Tried to be all reasonable and give it the 6-12 months they say it can take to settle, 18 months later it's still ruling my life! Roll on Wednesday!

DPrince · 14/05/2012 19:25

My appointment was at 7.10. Still sat waiting and phone battery low. Just want it out, sitting here thinking about is making it worse.

FermezLaBouche · 15/05/2012 18:53

So how did it go? Hope it was fine and you are happy with your choice!

DPrince · 15/05/2012 19:04

Hi. It wasn't to bad actually. She was really good. Although my I didn't get home til 10pm. They were running behind and said they didn't have time unless I waited until they had finished. So I sat until 9.15. I wasn't going home untill it was out. I feel already, don't know if the effects are subsiding or just the relief of having it out. I suspect the latter.

Fermez your feelings are how I was. The tiniest thing would set me into a downward spiral. The first nurse that saw told me she had one for 3 years. When it was out, she realised how bad she had felt. She couldn't believe how much better she felt without it.

Glittertwins · 15/05/2012 19:40

I had one after having the twins. It was bloody awful. I didn't realise how much of it was to do with it rather than having children as I'd never had children before either. DH said I was a nightmare to be with. How he stuck it out for 3 years like that I have no idea! All gone now and never ever again.

NicNocJnr · 15/05/2012 19:54

Glad you are already feeling better!

Showmethemhappyfeet · 15/05/2012 20:10

Ohh this all sounds v promising! Got my appt to get it removed tomorrow 2.50. Fingers crossed il get rid of this bloody big cloud I have following me at the moment!

DPrince · 15/05/2012 20:18

show good luck. It was fine and really worth. I am so happy that its bloody gone.

I had one about 7 years ago for 6 months. DH still talks about that period while "you had that thing in your arm".

I was so much happier without it.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 16/05/2012 15:39

It's gone!! And it was totally fine, didn't hurt at all!!! So relieved it's gone! Grin

Showmethemhappyfeet · 16/05/2012 15:40

Aberdeen good to know I'm not the only one whos DP hated 'that thing in your arm!'

wishiwasonholiday · 16/05/2012 15:40

My sil has been trying to have hers out for 6 months! She's awaiting an MRI now as they can't find it in her arm! I had none out cos it was causing me loads of problems and it was fine.

DPrince · 16/05/2012 17:32
