My children can never be donors, what do I tell them?

My children are 19, 22, 24, they were all born during the BSE crisis, the other day one of them asked me 'Mum I want to donate my blood when I travel overseas' , I know that this is not possible because all three of my children are banned from doing this in most other countries around the world.
AIBU not tell them exactly why this is, or should I let them find out for themselves, how do you tell your kids that they have potentially been exposed to deadly rogue prions?

I've never hear do this

NimpyWindowmash · 14/05/2012 18:55

Blimey ladies
"I've never hear do this"
and "rarer bood types"

Seems like this CJD is more serious than we thought, and may be affecting grammar and spelling

BartletForAmerica · 14/05/2012 18:57

freshletticia, they still don't screen blood for CJD now, which is why they are careful about who they allow to donate blood in this country. There isn't a decent test for CJD for blood transfusions, but, when they develop one, there is also a risk of blood donors not donating blood because of the risk of being told that they have the prions in their blood but that nothing can be done about it. It is a complex issue.

TandB · 14/05/2012 18:58

Bollocks. I initially typed 'bllod' and then corrected it to "bood".

Although obviously I meant:

Bllod - welsh blood
Bood - Blood lacking its little-known and recently discovered 'Component L'

mirry2 · 14/05/2012 18:58

Ha Ha Nimpy!. I have a computer with a wonky keyboard and never check what I've written

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/05/2012 18:59

So who did eat all the pies?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2012 19:01

Every thread I have ever read started by the OP has been concerned with BSE, I don't keep spreadsheets or anything but there have been enough of them that I can't help noticing.

Just tell them that they will have to abide by the rules for blood donation wherever they are at the time, the same as the rest of us. No point worrying about something you can't do anything about.

ImBetterThanYou · 14/05/2012 19:03

I've just found out from reading this thread that I can't donate blood overseas, I'm the same age as your oldest and I have to say it's not been a significant, emotional, lifechanging moment for me, if it will have such a dramatic impact on your children then maybe they've not got the emotional maturity to go travelling abroad?

Northernlurker · 14/05/2012 19:03

Oh this is the BSE obsessed poster Hmm

Look I'm sure YOU won't be backwards about coming forward to tell your dcs about your beliefs.

wimblehorse · 14/05/2012 19:04

Love the Cher steal.

Bit worried about the OP and her imaginary selfless adult children.

AIBU to be upset that my children travelled halfway round the world (together?) all to donate their vCjd prion infested blood to the needy Australians, only to have it thrown back in their faces?

GingerWrath · 14/05/2012 19:04

sagger see my post above, they were military rations and ended up being scoffed my the troops!

Pandemoniaa · 14/05/2012 19:09

It must be very boring being a single-issue poster. Don't they ever fancy a change?

storminabuttercup · 14/05/2012 19:10

AIBU to be pissed off that my mum never told me that I won't be able to donate blood abroad? I feel so sad that she has hidden this from me for 28 years? Should I cut her out of my life completely?

Oh wait....

BertieBotts · 14/05/2012 19:17

Could be a bot or an infomorph or something.

I miss the tea and biscuits.

ethelb · 14/05/2012 19:27

International tourists are far more likely to spread HIV than cjd. Maybe they should consider that.

YesMaam · 14/05/2012 19:33

Op - do you really hope these bans are lifted, because that seems completely contrary to your desire to raise awareness of the potential for CJD amongst meat eaters in the UK during the relevant time? And if some of us potentially, unbeknowst to us, have CJD we shouldn't be giving blood in the UK or anywhere should we?

On the one hand, it is clear that you have a cause, namely the promotion of awareness, on the other hand I would have thought disengenuous threads like these harm your campaign as you sound bonkers and obsessed

Beaaware · 14/05/2012 19:42

But just let them donate in the UK. Job done, crisis over.
