My children can never be donors, what do I tell them?

My children are 19, 22, 24, they were all born during the BSE crisis, the other day one of them asked me 'Mum I want to donate my blood when I travel overseas' , I know that this is not possible because all three of my children are banned from doing this in most other countries around the world.
AIBU not tell them exactly why this is, or should I let them find out for themselves, how do you tell your kids that they have potentially been exposed to deadly rogue prions?

OP,
I'm a bit worried about this. Are your kids intending on donating blood when they are abroad to help fund their overseas travel?

You should tell them what you know about their medical history but on the other hand that will invalidate their medical insurance.

bronze · 14/05/2012 17:15

Oh I never knew that, oh well
Will just carry on donating over here then rather than making a special trip
Abroad to do it

ethelb · 14/05/2012 17:15

Do you really all think there is an entire generation out there quakign about getting BSE?

I am 25 and that whole scare was sooo 90s.

Plus, I am well aware of the blood situation and any country with stupid regs doesn't deserve it to be quite frank.

bruxeur · 14/05/2012 17:15

WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE, PLEASE THINK OF THE (ADULT) CHILDREN!!1!

Flyingwithoutwings · 14/05/2012 17:16

Would this ban apply to vegetarians too? Hmm

GobblersKnob · 14/05/2012 17:16

Op is obsessed with CJD and all it's variants.

She is sitting somewhere in a darkened room rubbing her thighs as she never normally gets many responses to her crackers threads.

backwardpossom · 14/05/2012 17:18

CJD and all it's variants

bruxeur · 14/05/2012 17:18

Anyway "rogue" prions would be the ones sitting quietly in a host, not trying to misfold endogenous protein, before gracefully denaturing without incident.

It's the run-of-the-mill common-or-garden prions you want to watch out for, the tiny little fuckers.

ethelb · 14/05/2012 17:18

Plus I don't beleive that they came up to you and said they wanted to donate abroad. why the hell would they Confused

And I don't believe that none of them would have not heard about it. Or care.

me thinks you are shit stirring about a non-issue tbh.

CatPower · 14/05/2012 17:20

Just searched for Beaaware in the talk archive...

...jesus christ, get a life.

bruxeur · 14/05/2012 17:20

I hear they haven't had a great response to New Variant Creutzfeldt?Jakob, everyone's in uproar. Apparently they're going to reissue the original as Creutzfeldt?Jakob Classic?.

LadyBeagleEyes · 14/05/2012 17:20

Beaware, you are totally obsessed with this subject.
I've never seen you post about anything else Hmm.
It's not healthy.

Blimey...I thought you were going to say you didn't know how to tell them you'd had anal sex with a heroin addicted bisexual male, or similar.

Laughed so hard I nearly peed. Thanks for that Grin

eurochick · 14/05/2012 17:22

I don't understand why you would feel that this is somethng you couldn't discuss with your adult offspring.

I was a regular blood donor when I moved to Belgium. I wasn't allowed to donate there because I have lived in the UK over the BSE years. I was about 24 at the time and seem to have survived this blow without being traumatised. I was actually kind of amused by it, because Belgium had BSE cases too and I was vegetarian at the time and had been for most of the relevant period and therefore probably at less risk of having consumed BSE-ridden cow meat than most Belgians!

TheMonster · 14/05/2012 17:22

Why would they be so bothered about donating overseas? How very strange.

Queenofcake · 14/05/2012 17:22

Is this the same poster that always posts about BSe issues??? Hmm

I am not sure but think there is a possibility the OP here is taking a new angle to get her message about Mad Cow Disease/CJD out there!

Apologies of course OP if I have confused you with the Mumsnet resident CJD campiagner.

GingerWrath · 14/05/2012 17:23

Wasn't there phrase to do with the vinyl they used back then? Oh yes, I remember, change the record!

Gigondas · 14/05/2012 17:23

Catpower there was one piece about Peter Andre not being able to sing- I would agree with her on that

But op- yabu. Just tell your kids

bronze · 14/05/2012 17:23

Why is the op so worried about it? Are they a mad cow?

LadyGummerGummer · 14/05/2012 17:23

Calm down dears, John did say the burgers were safe to eat did'nt he Hmm

Glittertwins · 14/05/2012 17:28

I know someone who wanted to give blood whilst in the US but was told because she was British she couldn't. Nothing to do with her age either and she's vegetarian. If that's the law then that's it, no need for the wailing and gnashing of teeth that appears to be in the first post.

fluffiphlox · 14/05/2012 17:28

Where's the OP now? This isn't for real is it? (I don't know about the blood donation rules but the question seems ludicrous - if it's for real I would suggest you just tell them.)

ShatnersBassoon · 14/05/2012 17:31

It's not a horrible thing to have to tell them. You're not telling them they have an illness. Get a big meaty grip on reality. It's a complete non-issue.

LadyGummerGummer · 14/05/2012 17:32

My John would be horrifed if he read this, the burgers were safe, what is all the fuss about Confused
