Tooth Fairy!

AIBU to be really cross with DH for telling 6yo DS that there is no such thing as the Tooth Fairy??

Yesterday DS lost only his 2nd tooth and unfortunately for him, out of my earshot, he asked DH if the Tooth Fairy really existed. Well, instead of being all glib (as I would have been i.e. "how else would be the money appear under your pillow", or, "it's magic"), DH just turned around and said NO!

Am so cross as most of his friends still believe, and I think we may now be on the slippery slope to shortly not believing in Father Christmas anymore {sad}.

Also he has a 4 yo sister who he is more than likely to now share his wordly views with.

DH can't understand why I am pissed off, but surely kids are innocent for such a short time these days, why not maintain their fantasies for as long as possible?

YABU. If they're old enough to express doubt and ask the question, I think they're old enough to know the truth.

CrispyCod · 14/05/2012 14:36

YANBU. Your DH should have discussed it with you really before deciding to tell DS the shocking truth ! Grin

CallMeAl · 14/05/2012 14:37

yanbu, miserable git he is.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 14/05/2012 14:38

YABU - do you want DH to lie??? If he is asking then its apparent that he doesnt believe anyway and if he knows that dad is telling him porkies about this......it opens a can of worms.

The tooth fairy is crap anyway, I was blooming terrified of her when I was a kid!

Convict224 · 14/05/2012 14:38

YABU, could you not admit to your child that in fact your alter ego is The Tooth Fairy. Rearing him and leaving money under his pillow is what you do. And the million other things but don't get bogged down in details.

TheFlyingFishFinger · 14/05/2012 14:39

We still haven't fessed up to DD (9)

She knows though, so every time a tooth falls out she sets a bastard trap so it will wake her up when we're doing the "tooth fairy routine" she thinks this hilarious.

I intend on sending DP in wearing a tutu and a wand next time.

I do think that once they ask you should probably tell them the truth, if she is mature, can't you just have a word with her about not spilling the beans to DS?

TheFlyingFishFinger · 14/05/2012 14:39

He, sorry.

MothershipG · 14/05/2012 14:41

I wouldn't worry about it too much, my 2 were much more interested in the 'magic' of the shiny pound coin of their very own than they were in how it got there! Grin Same at Xmas, they are more interested in the presents than in the delivery method. Which, as I'm not a very convincing liar, is probably just as well as neither of mine were fooled by fairies or Father Xmas for long.

Ithinkitsjustme · 14/05/2012 14:41

I always made the rule that we wouldn't tell an outright lie to our kids about Father Christmas, tooth fairy etc. Once they asked they got told. At 6 he's old enough to take great pleasure in knowing something that his "baby" sister doesn't and will no doubt keep the fantasy alive for her if you enlist his help.

picnicbasketcase · 14/05/2012 14:45

I'm probably dreadful but have so far deflected questions about whether the tooth fairy and Santa are real by saying 'Hmmmm. What do YOU think?' listening to various theories, by which time DC had got distracted by something else, thereby neatly avoiding having to give a definitive answer.

Noqontrol · 14/05/2012 14:53

That's a shame. I loved the idea of the tooth fairy, father Christmas and all that stuff when I was a kid. No, YANBU op.

chasingtail · 14/05/2012 14:58

Thanks All

I have never outright lied to DS about Tooth Fairy/SC etc but just remained glib enough for him to be satisfied with the answer.

If he was a bit older I wouldn't have minded so much but he's only 6 & he will be a cynical adult soon enough!

Married to a very "black and white" man so don't know why I should be so Shock that he gave such a direct answer. Maybe next time a tooth falls out will make him dress up in tutu & wand as punishment Grin

It can be a loooong slippery slope you know ... DD was told the tooth fairy wasn't real, by a friend, aged 5. She was delighted, as the tooth fairy scared her witless. Grin She is now 8, has some doubts about Santa, but is not a non-believer yet, still enchanted by NORAD Tracks Santa and intrigued by 'Santas' at tourist attractions etc.
