Everytime someone mentions going to York, living in York, visiting York there is lots and lots of people saying ooh its lovely there, wish I lived there I love it there blah blah blah. Why?

I was born and bred in York and have just moved out of York so have lived there for 33 years apart from 3 years at Uni in Manchester.

I have got nothing against it, but really don't see its wonderful appeal at all. Is it because Im so used to it I dont see what others see? Is it because I know about a slightly darker side to it? Is it because it truely is wonderful than a lot of other places, but I dont know that as I haven't lived in most other places?

My bus to work goes past the back of the big one. From that angle it looks rusty, rickety and a bloody great big eyesore Grin

York.

I personally dont get why people love york.

I love history but yet I find york ( I have only really been to the city centre) really strange.

cant describe exactly what I mean, but Its not for me!

CallMeAl · 14/05/2012 20:26

York rules. Blackpool, in comparison, is Shitsville Inc.

Queen ethelburgas is nearby... Wink.

It's nice, it's safe, you can walk around at night, it has parks and gardens and theatres and shops and city walls, it's small enough to be friendly but big enough to be interesting, and the schools are generally good.

It is a bit middle class and perhaps a bit insular, but it is one of the nicer places you could end up, IMO.

CallMeAl · 14/05/2012 20:44

I have lived both in and near Blackpool. I would not go back if you paid me. I'd move to York anytime though.

ShutUpMeg · 14/05/2012 20:44

York is nowhere near the ocean for christs sake!!!

SurprisinglyCurvaceousPirate · 14/05/2012 20:57

Who said it was Meg??

irememberthesilverjubilee · 14/05/2012 20:58

Another fan of York here - spent a happy 4 years in early 90s - at college
It was (is!) a fab place and have been back with DH & DC (and went up on the city walls for the FIRST time!!)

I must have staggered past some of you in Fibbers drinking 20/20 Wink
or in The Willow / Toffs on a Thursday / Ziggys on a Wednesday (I think)
happy hour in Oscars Grin

Although there was a big divide between townies and students - that is in every uni town though isn't it?

York has something for everyone?!

insancerre · 14/05/2012 21:04

really meg, well you learn something new every day

dunnoreally · 14/05/2012 21:24

I lived in York in my 20's and I agree the nights out could be rough. Stags and some really really really drunk service men don't mix. It was a meat market and really bland.

No getting away from how lovely it was in spring and autumn. When the weather and nature is beautiful and before the tourists decend.

The people aren't friendly but I suspect that is becasue they are essentially living in a market type town that has been invaded by 'others'. There is a certain amount of snobbery.
It wears off as your face becomes known and the people still aren't friendly but would do anything to help you and enquire after every last member of your family - whilst maintaining a grumpy uninterested air. T'is Yorkshire you know!!

Railway museum, The Minster and Castle Howard are all amazing. True treasures. Also Betty's. But never ever in summer and certainly not at the weekend.

I went to Uni at York st John for 5 years, just graduated last year. I travelled in and you could always guarantee it would be raining in York- no matter what the weather anywhere else!

BUT I loved it- living in Redcar (close to Middlesbrough) I met my first real life homeless person in York. Passed him every day for 5 years and on my last day took him some blankets. (money would have been no good he was mostly high and shouty)

There's something about crossing the bridge and seeing the minster that makes you happy though! And I got to graduate there Grin

FartBlossom · 14/05/2012 22:49

York is nowhere near the ocean for christs sake!!! Confused

Ive never been to Betty's perhaps thats why Im not as enthralled as lots of other people Grin

Meg, I think she was tlaking about Bridlington!
No, I was very put out when I rang our hotel in York centre and asked for a sea view and they said no :o

We stayed in a hotel that has since gone for our honeymoon (when Perky the Peacock was still perky) and while I can see why it's gone, our room had a bay wondow with a chair in it. It had a brillaint view of the Minster, and we just used to sit in peace and read.
Peace, oh yes, i remember that.

Beaaware · 14/05/2012 22:57

York, Pork, Beef, Crete all the same to me Wine Wine hiccup

FartBlossom · 14/05/2012 23:10

Brid isnt near the ocean either. I didnt think the North Sea was an ocean, hence the name Wink

very good point!

I'm like this about Oxford. It's a bit rubbish.

bamboozledAardvark · 11/06/2012 18:04

We live on the edge of TH and, having come from an estate in a 'real' city it is tame, despite our postcode having the highest crime statistics in York. I disagree with people here being insular as well. DH and I are both outsiders and have made a lot of new friends, just by walking around town/saying hello to people on our street. There were also some lovely Jubilee celebrations in the local church - a real community feel.

Culture wise, I agree there's not much going on but there has been loads this year! The barbican's re opened (we're too old for Fibber's Wink) and this year is York 800 so there's going to be lots of celebrations for that. There's also the York Mystery Plays this year which should be fantastic.

Honestly, if it weren't for the busloads of stag/hen dos, the races (as featured on Big Fat Gypsy Weddings!) and the hoards of tourists it would be the perfect place to live.

It may be cold, but at least it doesn't rain much :o
