To miss "real" photos?

Svrider · 12/05/2012 18:31

Yes, I know digital ones are much clearer, can be posted on face book etc... But I miss real photos
The careful selecting of a photo opportunity, the decision of 24 Or 36 photos, the 2 week wait for the photos....
The fact the with real photos the hard drive cannot just crash leaving you with 0 photos of ds b4 the age of 18 months, instead relying on the few photos your DM took with her £6.99 wow camera
So aibu

YANBU at all!
Mostly because I have been in the exact same position and feel so Sad I have barely any photos of my beautiful first born.

ragingmull · 12/05/2012 18:37

YABU. Why don't you use analog camera? I do and I have hundreds of lovely photos that I don't have to look at through a screen.

Sirzy · 12/05/2012 18:38

Back up the photos and print the special ones off.

Svrider · 12/05/2012 18:40

Thing is raging mull I sort of brought into the whole digital is the way forward thing
I think analogue will be my next purchase

No, my firstborn was the pre-FB days unfortunately.
And he was such a beautiful baby too. Grin

ragingmull · 12/05/2012 18:49

svrider you can get really decent secondhand analog camera for pretty cheap. Also I send my films off to a company that develop them for 2.99 each and you get a free film with your photos!

Yama · 12/05/2012 18:54

You have just reminded me that somewhere we have about 10 disposable cameras from our wedding that we should really get developed. Exciting.

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 12/05/2012 18:59

I upload all my photos to Truprint. I can order prints at a good price and best of all my pictures are held in cyberspace so if my laptop dies (like the last one and I lost my pics) they are still all there :-)

CaptainHetty · 12/05/2012 19:03

YANBU, but I did think it was common sense to back up anything important stored on your hard drive.

Primrose123 · 12/05/2012 19:04

I have a digital camera, and save them all to my computer, but I still get the good ones printed and put them in albums. I like having 'proper' photos.

tb · 12/05/2012 19:05

raging who is it that prints a film for £2.99? Please say - last time we took 5 of dd's films to the supermarket, it cost ?55, and then 2 weeks later it was ?20 for a black and white one.

blonderthanred · 12/05/2012 19:06

Yama, you have just reminded me that I have the same. It's our 10th wedding anniversary in August....

bigbluebus · 12/05/2012 19:11

DH downloads all our photos to Snapfish and then orders prints of the best ones, so we still have photos to look at even when the computer dies (also take back ups on disc from time to time - but saw a program on TV a few months ago about digital storage and the shelf life of disc etc is limited - even they said real paper photographs was the safest way to keep your memories).

We recently went through all our photos and threw away lots of duplicates (often got 2 sets printed when children were small to give copies to grandparents) and duff photos from the old 'film developing' days. As we got to recent pictures, there was nothing to throw as we only had good quality pictures we had chosen to print.

No reason at all why you can't still print photos and put them in a drawer in lovely albums.

gamerwidow · 12/05/2012 19:13

I'm the same as primrose I use a digital camera but I have hard copies of my favourites plus a backup of everything on an external hard drive.
I love the fact that you can take loads of shots with a digital then choose the best. I think if I didn't have a digital camera then I would not own a single picture of my toddler actually looking at the camera because it always takes at least 10 goes :)

The one thing I really hate about digital cameras though is that it makes taking pictures of vain people hard work. At least when the result is not available instantly they can't force you to retake the bloody thing until they're happy with it.

Svrider · 12/05/2012 20:36

Thanks all
Yes printing off digital photos/ sending them for printing seems to be one of those jobs that I never get round to Blush
I do think analogue may be better for me
I do have some photos, printed on paper (didn't get round to buying proper photo paper) , with stripes on where the ink was running out!

I've backed up my photos onto three different hard drives, one of which is only powered up when I load things to it. It is silly not to back them up...

Trills · 12/05/2012 21:50

YABU to be complaining.

If you want to use a film camera then you can.

fortheloveof · 12/05/2012 22:21

Ordering prints online is pretty easy and there are some reasonable deals (especially first orders). I love looking through the 'real' albums with the kids, if only I was a bit more organised I'd have the prints from the last 2 years too!

Aribura · 12/05/2012 22:39

Hardly any of my "real" photos from a special trip turned out. :(

niceguy2 · 13/05/2012 10:06

YABU

Remember also how many photos out of the 24/36 came back over/under exposed, blurry, eye shut etc

OP have you asked a pro to take a look at the disk? Unless its physically broken (eg clicking when you turn it on) there's a good chance your photos can be saved
