To tell dd I will deduct 5p from her pocket money everytime she fails to turn the bathroom light off?

I am sick of reminding her. She's quite capable of turning it ON but turning it off seems to completely defeat her.

Maybe a financial sanction will have more effect wish I could do the same to DP who hardly sets an example!

Haha, how old is she?

mollymole · 12/05/2012 11:39

You cannot do this to your child if she is being treated differently from any other family member. It is just part of being a parent.

MrsMcEnroe · 12/05/2012 11:40

I recently tried this with DS who is in incapable of putting his toothbrush back in the toothbrush holder (he leaves it dribbling all over the windowsill).

It didn't work.

blackeyedsusan · 12/05/2012 11:42

try having a chart of units of electicity that are used... and a note acoss the bottom about the more money is spent on electricity the less therrer is to spend on toys... pocket money.

faintpinkline · 12/05/2012 11:47

Oh dear MrsMcenroe will have to think of something else then maybe will try Blackeyedsusan's plan

Have a "light box" instead of a swear box and when anyone leaves it on they have to put 5p in!

MrsMcEnroe · 12/05/2012 11:52

please let me know if it works faintlinkline!

I might start leaving DS' dribbling toothbrush in his bed and see if that gets the message across.

Hopandaskip · 12/05/2012 16:20

we just put a timer switch on the boys' bathroom. The max they can leave it on is 15 minutes now. Much less arguing.

YANBU but it needs to be more than 5p to be effective I think

cece · 12/05/2012 16:42

I do somthing similar with regards to dirty clothes on the floor. Works as treat and I only take a penny off per item. Grin

startail · 12/05/2012 16:45

YANBU

I frequently threaten to deduct money towards the oil bill from DDs who leave the back door openAngry

Lizcat · 12/05/2012 16:46

I offer bonus scheme and penalty scheme with pocket money. DD is not treated any differently to any other member of the household DH do not leave the TV playing to no one and clothes strewn across the house. I have to say it only took one week of the pocket being hit for the point to be made.

slowestwildebeast · 12/05/2012 16:50

I suggest removing the bulb and having torches! I'm a genius!

SarkyWench · 12/05/2012 16:52

Does she have a sibling who might leave it on deliberately to get her fined?

:)

jammydodger1 · 12/05/2012 17:00

I think its a great idea but rather that 5p I would remove something for half an hour - if I took my dd1 mobile phone off her she would be like one of those andriod with the battery removed Grin

Dawndonna · 12/05/2012 17:43

I fine my kids for leaving their bedroom lights on. I must be really bloody horrible, I fine them ten pence!
It works after a few days.

Mrbojangles1 · 12/05/2012 20:15

Personally I would be telling her if she can't turn if off she can't turn it on, a couple of days going wee in the dark and she won't forget agin.

Ds kept leving his shoes in the garden, leaving them to get socked weed on by cats ECt so I told him if you can't bring them in you don't go out side with them

Two days of him not being able to go out in he garden due to lack of shoes he learned his lesson

lou2321 · 12/05/2012 20:17

YANBU - I have told my DS this week that I will be taking 10p of his pocket money everytime he leaves his bedroom light on - he is 6 but as he can turn it on himself he is quite capable of turning it off. He only gets £1 a week from his grandad so I think 10p is ok, he will have none left at the rate he's going Grin
