I found the tory-dating thread quite interesting. Clearly some people have very strong and deep-seated political views. I couldn't help but wonder: what would you do if your offsprings became conservatives? Would you be disappointed? Would you try to change their opinions at every opportunity? Would you buy them the complete Ken Loach collection? Would you dare admit it to your friends?
And what about their future partners, wouldn't you at least try to love them a little even if they were tories?
For me, I have right wing tendencies but it would probably be fun if DS ended up politically minded and on the left. At least it wouldn't be dull!

Grin at Oatcake!

ealier, based on what?! Confused

SpiritOfTheSite · 11/05/2012 22:47

I don't find the guardian particularly left wing, it's more New Labour.

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/05/2012 22:47

I would hope my DC voted based on their morals, not on the basis of modern trends. Can't bear folk who flit hither and thither when it comes to politics

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 22:48

I can say hand on heart that my children will never vote Tory

ReactionaryFish · 11/05/2012 22:48

Blimey. I may have many failings as a parent, but comparing myself to some on here, I clearly should be given some kind of fucking medal. It would just never cross my mind in a million billion years to deal with my children like this.

SpiritOfTheSite · 11/05/2012 22:49

What modern trends in voting behaviour??

Iggly · 11/05/2012 22:49

How's that ealier? No danger of me slipping to the right and I'm 30, plenty of voting years left in me. Never have done, never will.

JosephineCD · 11/05/2012 22:49

That's a ridiculous thing to say usualsuspect.

SpiritOfTheSite · 11/05/2012 22:49

Well done Reactionary!!

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 22:50

No voting Tory is sick

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 22:50

No its the truth

ReactionaryFish · 11/05/2012 22:52

I hope they disappoint you, usualsuspect. if this is representative of your approach towards them, and their right to make their own minds up on matter of politics, you deserve no better.
really dreadful attitudes on display here.

paticker · 11/05/2012 22:54

I'm surprised at the responses on this thread, most of my family are left wing socialists but my Brother is a liberal and my sister a Conservative half the family have actually disowned them and the other half barely speak to them but they hope they will "come home". I've always thought this was an extreme and frankly quite pathetic minority opinion but it appears far more prevalent looking at this thread.

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 22:54

Do you feel sorry for my poor LW children?

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/05/2012 22:56

usual I feel sorry for your poor LW children, do you feel sorry for mine? Is it a Leicester thang?

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 22:56

They would never disappoint me , they don't have the I'm alright jack attitude of the RW

racingheart · 11/05/2012 22:57

What if they turn out apolitical? I've only recently realised I am. It's such a relief not to feel guilty anymore because I support high tax and think the welfare state is the most brilliant thing about Britain, but send my children to private school and don't give a toss whether other people think this is horrendously elite.

Why can't we just think what we think without sticking a coloured rosette on it. We're not Best in Show! My DS is a huge fan of Monster Raving Loonies. And a friend of mine is one of their more successful candidates so I can imagine where DS's vote will end up.

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/05/2012 22:57

oh and I live in tory bastard heaven, so by rights should be a money loving tory git, except I'm not Smile

catus · 11/05/2012 23:00

I think all this would be great comedy material. Lefty parents start hating their DIL who they think is the one responsible for turning their son tory for example. Of course, everyone reconcile at the end and learn a valuable lesson of open mindedness and humility!

Iggly- Most of the electorate are not aligned to a particular political party as they used to be, this means that a lot of people are "floating voters" and the number of floating voters is increasing as peoples ties with parties continues to weaken. In their lives your children will experience several political cycles during which their political preference is very likely to fluctuate so they will probably vote for a mixture of Parties throughout their lifetimes. Considering the size and prevalence of the Tories there is a high chance that they will be in this mixture.

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 23:02

I would think WE is Tory Heaven

Taffeta · 11/05/2012 23:02

I am a socialist, DH is a Tory. I expect the DC will be apolitical.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 11/05/2012 23:02

This thread is ridiculous. Membership of the Conservative party makes you into "a Conservative" as with the other parties, not how you choose to vote on a certain day. Within reason, the way you vote doesn't define you as a human being. I actually can't believe people are talking about disowning children because of the box they tick in a (secret) ballot.

ReactionaryFish · 11/05/2012 23:03

I feel sorry for anyone who has to live with the kind of sanctimonious git who wanks on about being morally superior because of the way they vote.

usualsuspect · 11/05/2012 23:04

I feel sorry for anyone who votes Tory
