To be hacked off with cyclists

Well actually just one...but so angry.
Traffic was at a standstill this evening....I was going nowhere fast!
I was on the inside lane of a two lane road in a small town when I hear a massive crash. A cyclist had tried to overtake me on the inside, smacked in to my wing mirror, flew off his bike and landed on the road infront of me.
I had just started to creep forward in the traffic...thank God I slamed on my brakes, I could have driven over him. Thankfully he was fine. (though his Ego a bit bashed) his bike was fine, but my wing mirror totally trashed, looks like it's been ripped off.
I pulled in to a bus stop that was close to us. Looked around for a witness, but everyone just moved on and away.
In fairness to the guy on the bike, he did admit it was his fault, when I said it was going to be a costly repair he just shrugged. I suggested as it was his fault he should pay for the damage, he didn't respond. I asked for his details, he gave me a card with a number on, but now I'm wondering if it was any random card he pulled out his bag. There was no reply from the number when I tried to ring it an hour ago. I am so hacked off. I was doing nothing wrong, and I could have killed this guy, I may have a costly repair bill, just because he wouldn't wait his turn in the traffic.
In general I admire cyclists, I like the enviromental aspect, the health aspect, the fact it's cost effective etc etc....but AIBU to think they should be more bloody careful and not overtake from the inside!!!!!!
sorry just needed to let off steam

Right, I haven't got my glasses on but I just had to say YANBU. I'm hacked off with cystitis too. Hurts when I pee and then hardly any pee comes out. It's like mouse spit.

Bloody cystitis. Get rid!

To those saying cyclists should pay Road Tax. I think you mean Vehicle Excise Duty. So not a "road" tax but a "vehicle" tax.

And VED is free for vehicles with low emissions. So given that cycles are zero emmissions, even if they were subject to VED, it would be zero cost!

amateurist - these people that think ved should be payable on cycles - it is due to the fact they fart a lot and think it counts as a pollutant.

I still think we should charge cars to be on the road, five pound for a mile and then 3 pounds for the next mile and 2 pounds for the third mile - after that every mile is charged at 1p

I couldn't careless whether cyclists pay VED or not.

But they should have third party insurance and some form of identifiable registration.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/05/2012 09:42

Lots of us have 3rd party insurance. I've said on these threads before, my son damaged a car with his bike. My insurance paid for the damage.

If drivers want cyclists to have insurance and registration then perhaps they should campaign for the law to be changed not be angry at cyclists for not doing something that they're not required to do. It is not the cyclists' fault that we aren't required to have these things. If it was law then we would have them. Well I'm sure there'd be a proportion that didn't bother but such is the way of the world.

ItsAPublicForumWhine · 15/05/2012 10:04

They were having a good ol' bunfight about this crap on BBC breakfast today too.

Amateurish · 15/05/2012 10:36

It's funny how this whole issue about insurance was kicked off by the OP who suffered damage which the cyclist apologised for and is paying to have repaired.

Pedallleur · 15/05/2012 10:52

As has already been stated (many times). there is no requirement for cyclists to have registration/insurance. Let's put it another way. Would we/you all have car insurance if it wasn't mandatory. Statistics say there are 1 million motorists who don't have it but if it wasn't required would you voluntarily stump up £££ every year or if your car didn't reuire a regular mot would you take it to be done?
Anyway, perhaps you should have been with me last night when a black Lexus passed the traffic queue I was in (turning left), proceeded to the red traffic light (right turning lane) and turned 90 deg. left to force his way in to the traffic he had overtaken or the BMW (W11RAG) that went round me (I was in my car) this am at a t-junction to turn left (the direction I was heading). This character regularly drives on the opp.side of the road at high speed to overtake people. I don't think I saw a cyclist going thro' a red light though.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 15/05/2012 10:54

Just because there is no requirement for cyclists to have insurance, that doesn't mean that lack of law is morally right.

And even if it isn't required, that shouldn't stop cyclists who have morals from wanting to do the right thing and pay for any damage they cause.

inabeautifulplace · 15/05/2012 12:22

And it doesn't stop anyone decent from taking responsibility, outraged, as in this case :)

The big winners if cycle insurance was compulsory would be insurance companies. Car insurance would rise significantly IMO, because there would be more minor claims from both groups.

Has the cyclist answered his 'phone yet?

This thread has wandered all over the (well trodden) place but I want to know if he has responded and have you sorted out the repair cost?

applecrumple · 15/05/2012 15:14

YANBU. Cyclists do appear to think they can just have the run of th road & the pavement; the amoun o times I've nearly been run over whilst walkin on the pavement. Oh & a lot of cyclists jump the lights too.

BoneyBackJefferson · 15/05/2012 16:37

Pedallleur

So you know the make of the car did you take the reg? have you reported to the police?
If he does it regulaly have you reported to the police regulaly?

You can get as angry as you like but if you don't do anything about it...

Whatmeworry · 15/05/2012 20:39

It really hailed this afternoon. I counted 5 cyclists caught in it. Proof there is a God and karma exists :o

madmouse · 15/05/2012 20:42

It all depends on culture - in Holland where I'm from all families hold a form of public liability insurance that covers such things as causing accidents on your bike and children causing damage to property when out playing.

So when I started cycling in the UK and could not find PL insurance for bikes I felt very 'naked' and not quite happy. Very happy to have found a suitable policy now.
