dh has just been watching a documentary on BBC4 about history. Bloody stupid music in the background! Angry Why do they do this? What the heck does it add to the programme?

Look, here's one about the moon now. I bet this one's the same.

We have orchestral rumblings already Hmm

I take it that "Homes Under the Hammer" doesn't qualify as a documentary then? The soundtrack for that is a work of flipping genius. Grin

weemumbelina · 10/05/2012 23:18

YANBU. Very irritating. And why do the presenters have to 0-V-E-R-E-M-P-H-A-S-I-S-E E-V-E-R-Y- S-I-N-G-L-E- W-O-R-D?

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 14:13

No, I'm only having problems with so called 'serious' documentaries about science 'n' stuff like that. Homes Under The Hammer music is fine Smile

Myleene Class gets the award for worst presenter. She goes over the top with the emphasis and head tilting.

HeathRobinson · 11/05/2012 14:42

I'm ok with it unless they try to talk over it. Then I can't hear what they're saying very well.

Methe · 11/05/2012 14:42

Do you ever watch Points Of View? SOOOOOOOO many people complain about background music!

TBH poor music renders a program unwatchable. And so does Myleene.

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 19:25

Don't know Myleene Class Confused Will take a look on Youtube and observe for head tilting tendancies.

YANBU. If it's done well it can enhance the programme, but too often it's intrusive and of low quality (fake violins, music in the wrong places, too loud etc.)

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 19:30

She doesn't seem to wear many clothes. Is she a call girl? Confused

Holby City always plays emo music and it drives me bonkers. They're a big fan of the singer Sia.

SageYourOracle · 11/05/2012 19:44

Yep Cinny- always Adele for a sad bit! First 4 bars of 'Hometown Glory' on a loop every single time. Would make a good drinking game if you were a bit sad & don't get out much like me - watching a c4 documentary & drinking 3 fingers every Adele snippet. . . perhaps not. . .

ifancyashandy · 11/05/2012 19:49

OK. Announcement... I work in telly and say 'yay' or 'nay' to some of the programmes you watch before they get transmitted.

I promise - absolutely promise - that the music helps. If we made shows minus the music you would turn off. Pauses..... where people.....don't..... speak.....draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.

Don't hate me.

CarpeJugulum · 11/05/2012 19:55

I hate music on the radio when they're doing news, weather and travel...

"and there's a traffic holdup on..." drumroll, guitar solo, cymbal crash - and I have no idea where to avoid.

Drives me (literally!) bats Angry

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 22:52

ifancyashandy the music doesn't help on many programmes or people wouldn't be complaining so much. Sometimes it's suitable, in dramas for example, but stuff like documentaries, you just want to listen to the info. that's being given.

mindgone · 11/05/2012 23:33

What about when they tell you what's going to happen in the next part, after the adverts, then in the next bit, they tell you what happened in the last bit!! Drives me nuts! Also background music that you'd like to turn off or down because you can't quite hear what's being said!! FFS!

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 23:37

Perhaps it's worth muting the sound and just putting subtitles on Grin

what REALLY gets my goat is sad plinky plonky piano music.
shot of child going into theatre: sad plinky plonky piano music.
shot of dog going to the vet: sad plinky plonky piano music.
shot of anything in the world that is remotely sad and tugs at the nations heartstrings: sad plinky plonky piano music. ad-infi-fecking-itum

Why oh why do they do it?!? It drives me to distraction Angry

ifancyashandy · 11/05/2012 23:47

Ooh Lockets! Is your DP a PD?! Grin

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 11/05/2012 23:49

Not as much as I hate laughter tracks. I point blank refuse to watch any programme that uses them.

Oh and news programmes that require an on-site reporter for every story, i saw a reporter going blue with cold outside the perimeter of stansted airport in the pitch dark once. You couldn't even see the airport in the background Confused
