To be annoyed at neighbours comment - am I mistreating my dd?!

I've just moved into a new house and was chatting to my neighbour outside, for only the second time. I asked if they could hear our baby when she cries and they said they could sometimes but they don't mind as long as she isn't being mistreated!! They then looked at her and had a discussion between them where they decided she didn't look like she was being mistreated! Now I would hope they were joking around but it didn't seem like they were, she does cry a lot but come on is that rude or what?
Maybe i am over reacting to what was supposed to be a joke but it's been playing on my mind all day and now I'm paranoid every time she cries.

They're either attempting to make a joke or are just very odd. Keep your distance till you work out which. Either way don't let it get to you. Not worth it.

It sounds as if it was definitely a joke - they would never have discussed it between themselves in front of you if they hadn't been joking. It was a crap joke and not at all sensitive to you as the new arrival, but I'm sure it was a joke.

They were joking. They have a shit sense of humour but I don't think there is any malice there.

Nikkim30 · 10/05/2012 20:28

I'm sure you're right, a hint of a smile from either of them would have helped!

I reckon one of them came out with the 'as long as she isn't being mistreated' line and then thought oh-shit-why-did-I-say-that Blush and tried to make a joke of it. Forgetting that when you're in a hole you should stop digging.

Nikkim30 · 10/05/2012 20:38

Yea, the husband probably got it on the neck when they got back inside!

Oh my Dh is ALWAYS saying really odd and innapropriate things...he can't help it...I can't take him anywhere. He said a really terrible thing to a friend the other week and I couldn't believe it and tbh neither could poor dh. His mouth comes out with something and it's like hs head doesn't engage.

It sounds like they were a bit nervous or something.

ShellyBobbs · 10/05/2012 20:41

Or they could just be very strange. There's nowt as strange as folk.

FallenCaryatid · 10/05/2012 20:45

Maybe they are concerned, and wanted to let you know that they can hear her crying.
There are enough posts on here by concerned women worrying about what they hear and observe of babies and young children in the neighbourhood, and asking MN what they should do about it.
