To think I can manage without a TV? (with a newborn?)

My first AIBU so please be gentle:

So, we've just had our lounge redecorated and the wall knocked through to the kitchen so it's all open plan. Basically there's nowhere to put our big, old style CRT TV so I have freecycled it.
I was going to get a small flat screen TV that will fit on top of a cupboard, but before I shell out loads of cash I am wondering, can I manage with iplayer/4OD etc on the laptop?
We don't have any DVDs so no problem not being able to watch them.
DH doesn't watch TV much at all so doesn't care (prefers not to have a TV, if he's honest).
DD is 2.4y and likes very particular cbeebies/peppa pig type stuff which is all downloadable on the laptop.
When DH and I watch stuff together in the evening we either download stuff on itunes (eg films) or we watch Top Gear/nature stuff (god we sound boring) on iplayer on the laptop.
I like all the X factor/Britains got talent/OBEM/health documentary stuff but often watch it on catch up because I go to bed so early and it starts at 9pm.

The sticking point is I'm expecting a DS in 7 weeks. When DD was newborn daytime TV got me through the endless hours of breastfeeding/boredom. Also I am considering things like Wimbledon/Olympics which may not be possible to live-stream on the internet. Also I'm not sure how much just sitting I will do with newborn DS when I have DD to entertain in the day?

So I guess I'm saying WWYD? Shell out for a new TV (plus TV license which has expired) or not?

we have a television, but no broadcast tv. just watch dvd's on it or play games.

so i would say you'd be fine if you have a computer to watch on.

if you are planning to watch live tv you will need a license though. if you're just watching things that were on earlier you're fine

You can pay to view sports live - if it's only Wimbledon, Olympics etc then it'd be cheaper than the TV license, I'm sure.

oh and when we bought our tv we had a letter from licensing people saying "you bought a tv you bad people! you don't have a license! thieves thieves thieves"

we rang them and said, please... come round and take a look. it isn't connected to anything and we don't have any broadcast tv.

they've never come round yet Confused

Much prefer radio as bf-ing accompaniment.

We haven't had a tv for 5 years or more. I thought I would miss it (DH has never had one and is quite anti-tv) but I don't. When dd was born last summer and fed for hours as it was either that or have her scream non stop I did watch a lot on iplayer and the occasional DVD, but I rarely bother now. The only thing I really miss is the tennis, every year I swear we WILL have a tv for Queen's/Wimbledon but I think it would be cheaper to travel to London, get centre court tickets etc than to buy a tv and license just for those weeks!

You could manage, but personally I would rather shell out £180 for a new telly. I love my laptop but I HATE watching TV on it.

Why not just try without? I mean, you go go to Tesco one afternoon if you really can't bear to be without one and buy a half decent one. They're so light and portable now.

whackamole · 11/05/2012 12:47

*you COULD go

ohdearnigel - I didn't say you didn't need a tv licence to watch live tv Confused
