am a fat person who needs to loose the weight before the high risk illnesses start to kick in. however have severe ibs, and high fibre food, such a wholewheat bread , cereals fruit and veg = high pain, and huge gut swelling and frequent trips to the small room.

so, my diet will be very small very low fibre foods, with small portions of certain fruit and veg.

I joined slimming world diet club , followed the diet for 2 weeks and am now ill with the ibs. Have lost 1/2lb a week, but gut so swollen can no longer wear jeans and am in constant pain.
so, have gone through the diet book and crossed off everything that triggers my ibs. pages and pages of food i cant eat.

am now so fed up, diet will consist today of 1 egg cooked in spray light mushrooms and the SIN of one slice of white bread.

lunch. um....rice cake and bananna?

dinner , chicken, boiled potatos, carrots.

strawberries.

sounds really fantastic doesnt it?

I don't think that the slimming world diet is right for you. It will never work if it is making you ill. Could you speak to a dietician at your GP's to see what they would recommend for you?

eragon · 09/05/2012 12:09

Have just got back from the Gp and this is what we have sorted out!

am going to have a slice of white bread and 1 slice of ham for lunch (no spread, or salad) and try and save rice cake for a snack.

Is that seriously what he has recommended you eat? It isn't enough - rice cake and banana for lunch!!

verytellytubby · 09/05/2012 12:13

Get yourself referred to a dietician. My SIL has severe IBS but managed to lose 3 stone with a NHS dietician and her GP.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 09/05/2012 12:14

Yanbu for being depressed about it - I think you would get more helpful advice if you posted in the general health topic, though.

Low carb diets seem to work wonders for lots of people. Is your ibs triggered by protein and fat? If not, then a low carb diet such as India Knights or even Atkins might work well for you.

eragon · 09/05/2012 12:14

I think the rice cake and banana are for a snack. but cant work out what to have that wont hurt for lunch, so a slice of white bread and ham is it.

if i have a jacket potato i cant eat the skin, i could have a small portion of white rice or pasta, but cant eat that at lunch and again for main meal as the wheat might flare things up futher. can tolerate small amounts.

I am going to starve to be thin arent i?

I can highly recommend this book IBS Solutions. I suffered for over 10 years and reading this helped me to work out what works for me and get it under control. In the last year I have lost 3 stone by using the book to work out my own healthy eating plan and using myfitnesspal.com

GobblersKnob · 09/05/2012 12:25

I gave up wheat and sugar and started eating, less carbs generally and as a result the IBS that I have had for the past 14 years has pretty much gone. I still get a very occasional flare up but can usually relate it to eating something I shouldn't have. In all honestly one slice of white bread would blow me up like a ballon and have me in agony with cramps. There is no way I would touch white rice or pasta.

BIWItheBold · 09/05/2012 12:29

Come and join the low carb Bootcamp thread! I am an IBS sufferer and I found that moving to low carb has completely sorted it out - I started low carbing to lose weight but only realised my IBS had gone after some weeks of doing it. If I go off piste, and start re-introducing too many carbs, the first sign is my IBS flaring up again..

eragon · 09/05/2012 12:31

I had my ibs under perfect control before the diet, and followed for some months previously the fodmapp diet which the gp gave me.

firbre and fruit and whole grains are the main problem here, if i over indulge i then cant enjoy milk or wheat for a while and have given them up as well for some time. then gradually re-introduced in small amounts. this gave my gut time to heal and work in a more normal fashion.
i can have white bread, but wholemeal is a deffo no no!

mayo is allowed, but not if you are on a diet, so to loose fat, this is what i am left with.
ibs is pretty indivdiual really, mine was caused from severe food poisoning and have permanant damage from it.

I know all IBS sufferers have different triggers but isn't one of them stress? It's certainly what triggers mine then the list of foods I can't eat becomes endless

your current diet sounds like starvation; are you sure it contains enough calories to stop you gorging in desperation keep you going?

I think a dietitian sounds like the sensible way to go, your GP will only have a limited knowledge of how to lose weight and IBS changes things quite a bit.

I know people think white bread and pasta are the devil but for IBS sufferers brown carbs are simply going to equal pain because your body has to work really hard to break down the 'husk' and this often triggers an attack. Might be worth googling 'soluble fibre' as this is what you need as an alternative. Good luck.. It can be done!

eragon · 09/05/2012 12:37

oh! am under huge stress. but thats not going to go away. when is life less stressful?

Hi op, i can relate totally to your post, i can't have any wholegrain, or high fibre foods, certain fruits are a total no go.
I can eat white bread, pasta, rice, but only in very small amounts, but they don't cause me to have constant diarrhea like water and stomach craps like the wholegrain foods do.

The best type of foods i find that help are mediterranean style, fish, olives, tomatoes (no seeds) olive oil, light cheeses, yoghurt, nuts.

I don't like much animal protien, am fussy, but definately not veggie, and have something like ribeye steak once a week.

It is depressing, i go out for dinner or lunch and have to find something that won't leave me on the toilet for the next day Sad

CiderwithBuda · 09/05/2012 12:56

Well if fibre, fruit and whole grains cause you pain then Slimming World is not for you. And there is no fibre, fruit and whole grain on Atkins or similar so that might work.

I think you need to accept that you can't do Slimming World. Not everyone can.

You can lose weight with IBS as others have said but you need an alternative to SW.

crazyspaniel · 09/05/2012 12:56

My abiding memory of Slimming World (admittedly several years ago) is of eating unlimited pasta on the green days. Has it changed?

squeakytoy · 09/05/2012 12:59

I have IBS and a low carb diet is definately the way to go. I found my IBS was much much better while dieting, and I lost 3 stone too.

lattelov3r · 09/05/2012 13:47

op i have IBS too and tbh i dont know much about what i should and shouldnt be eating but i struggle with weight loss too. I was diagnosed about 8 years ago after telling gp symptoms and sent on my way with a pack of pills that never worked. I constantly have major bloating, wind, stomach pain and gurgling every day after every meal ive just learnt to live with it tbh, i cant eat out at all or eat anything with grease or i get what i call my ibs attack which involves immediate need to use toilet no chance of holding back roughly 3 hours in toilet with explosive runs, labour like stomach pain, sweats, nausea and chills and a truly horrific experaince ibs is evil
