Whilst watching BGT the television there was an advert for Philadelphia showing one of the interesting wholesome recipies you can make with it. All going well until the family (well couple) sit down to their dinner on the sofa. AIBU or should advertising not be encouraging this? It's a researched fact that when not eating at the table you eat quicker and therefore more. With our country's ever growing obesity problem surely things on tv should be combating this and not condoning it?

I know this isn't the most ground breaking of topics but I was wondering if I was alone in my hatred for not eating at the dinner table!

Do you seriously let advertising influence you so much that a Philadelphia advert would lead you to eat on the sofa?!?!?! Do you seriously think anyone does that??????

squeakytoy · 08/05/2012 21:06

You can only eat what is on your plate.... if you pile your plate high with shite, it doesnt matter where you sit, how slowly you eat it, you still put weight on if it is too much food!

If anything I eat slower if I am sat watching tv while I eat... whereas sitting at the table, there is nothing to distract me from steadily ploughing through my dinner.

My mum was a size ten all her life, and rarely sat at the table to eat her small portions of dinner...

So... YABU

ReelAroundTheFountain · 08/05/2012 21:06

I cant get bothered about this and I'm fixated keen on eating at a dinner table. I don't honestly believe that people see Philadelphia family eating on sofa and think "Oh that has sanctioned sofa-eating, I shall now do it".

Gumby · 08/05/2012 21:08

Philadelphia encourage people to eat a chocolate version

Enough said....

ApocalypseThen · 08/05/2012 21:08

I think this stealth encouragement of gross overeating of processed cheese is a very serious problem. This is clearly subliminal messaging by Kraft.

They should be banned from showing anything other than adults (not children!) eating very modest portions of their product at the table in silent, ascetic contemplation before mortifying the flesh with a cat-o-nine tails to atone for the sin of eating food with a taste.

Post watershed only.

ecclesvet · 08/05/2012 21:09

YABU. I never really understood the importance of sitting round a dinner table; in my family, doing that was always very forced 'family time' and we all just ate in silence, possibly because my mum went the whole nine yards with napkins, china, etc. When we were eating on the sofas in front of the TV, it was much more relaxed, we chatted, and I think it was far more beneficial for family bonding.

Granted you can still have that vibe of chatty informality around a dinner table, but I didn't happen for us.

"when not eating at the table you eat quicker and therefore more."

Does eating food quicker magically increase your portion?

If families eat at the table, they won't be influenced by this. If families don't eat at the table, they won't be influenced by this. So I'm not really sure what your problem is.

I thought you were going to say something about how that woman seems to be quite pleased that she has a fussy family. That is mildly irritating, but only if I'm in a bad mood anyway.

BringBack1996 · 08/05/2012 21:10

I don't Tee, no, but my opinion was that as it's actively encouraged now to eat around a table that advertisement might encourage it too.

As I said it's hardly ground breaking so I'm not overly bothered about the answer, just thought I would ease myself into the AIBU topic gently!

I take all my cues on how to organise family life from adverts. I shall now be putting my dining table on a skip and eating my philly on the sofa. I will also be dancing around said sofa whenever I consume tortilla crisps and lying in a bath/sitting on steps of romany caravan before I even think of tackling a flake.

frownieface · 08/05/2012 21:12

That advert makes me stabby, if its the one i'm thinking of with the guy who doesn't normally eat sweetcorn, and the woman with a shrill voice.

RightsaidFreud · 08/05/2012 21:12

I just don't understand that advert. She says it needs to please three fussy boys, and the husband looks surprised, but their house is already full of toys and kids things?? can someone explain it to my tiny little mind?

BringBack1996 · 08/05/2012 21:14

ecclesvet I'm not 100% sure of the science behind it but apparently it takes 15 minutes of eating before your body 'knows' that it's full. If you eat quicker you can eat more in that time I suppose!

I can see that it's not a big deal at all. Maybe I'm a bit sensitive on the topic due to a cream settee that got mercilessly ruineed by DD and an unfortunate gravy incident Hmm

YANBU OP. This is a deeply worrying subject and I for one will not sleep a wink until Government steps in and makes it all illegal.

ReelAroundTheFountain · 08/05/2012 21:17

RightsaidFreud the joke is that she has only two sons and her dh is the third fussy boy.

Hilarious

EnjoyResponsibly · 08/05/2012 21:18

If its that shite with the pasta, that there is a questionable ad. You need STACKS of Philly to coat pasta, it's like eating a heart attack. Sitting on the couch or sitting at the table won't save you. Fact.

BeeInMyBonnet · 08/05/2012 21:20

Down with this sort of thing..

captainmummy · 08/05/2012 21:22

I take it it's not the chocolate philly one?

FizzyLaces · 08/05/2012 21:26

I live in a small flat in a big city with two kids and don't have a dining room or a table in the kitchen as it's too small. We have a small table in the corner of the living room and both my partner and I work full time and it is piled with junk/mending/letters/textbooks/shit no,not real shit, we have a toilet. I actually do feel guilty about this but it is not because of the Philadelphia advert. And I am fat. Want a fight? Grin

tethersend · 08/05/2012 21:28

Another example of Broken Britain.

BeeInMyBonnet · 08/05/2012 21:32

What exactly is the chocolate one for? Not pasta I'm assuming.

chocoroo · 08/05/2012 21:33

I think the point is supposed to be that she's making a quick, tasty meal so they can all relax together.

I would like to think we're a sophisticated enough society nowadays that the hyperdermic needle model of communication isn't particularly useful...

chocoroo · 08/05/2012 21:33

bee It's for digestive biscuits. Fact.

Marne · 08/05/2012 21:36

Some people don't have tables Grin, we always eat on the soffa and i eat what ever is on my plate.

captainmummy · 08/05/2012 21:38

I did read once that when watching TV you are actually using less energy (ie calories) that if you are actually doing nothing. The point was that we sit semi-comatose in front of the 'entertainment', whereas if we are talking/reading/thinking about doing housework we are using more muscles, moving head/eyes/mouth.

POssibly why we put on weight when eating in front of tv.

Personally i eat at our (new) breakfast bar (which i love!) and i'll tell you all about if you like!
