to expect my money back when I have the receipt?

I bought a couple of shirts (from Sports Direct) for a birthday present which weren't suitable. On the back of the receipt (after buying them) I read that they only do exchanges or gift cards. I'm not sporty so dont need anything from there and wanted my cash back. The manager pointed out a tinypost card sized notice behind the till saying they don't do refunds unless there's a fault. I left the store feeling really p*ed off with a giftcard for £40 which I don't want and am also £40 out of pocket after buying a different prezzie.

I bought a dvd from Sainsburys and it didn't work. Massive deep scratch right across. Changed it for another. Again didn't work and scratched. Took this one back with receipt and said no more i will have money back. I was given a refund card for £10.99. I didn't want that. I had the receipt and i paid cash. Was told this is what happens now. Are they right? I think it is wrong if paying in cash.

Years ago in sports direct I didn't know about their non refund policy. I specifically asked if I could get a refund if the armbands a bought werent correct. I was told yes. So I was livid when a week later I tried to do so. I asked to speak to the manager and told him what his staff member had said. He was really rude and claimed there was no way a staff member would say that. He said he had no way of finding out who it was. But I think the receipt had the mans name or an ID on it. Luckily i sold them on eBay.

Fair enough they have that policy but lying about it is crap.

Nothing like a rude, PA nearly 80 year old Grandma to stop me from ever stepping foot in a shop again Hmm. Of course I'm not advocating asking for a refund on such a cheap item from a charity shop, but you actually allow your staff to talk to customers like that???

wonkylegs · 09/05/2012 07:55

Sainsbury's were in the wrong, if it was faulty and you brought it back promptly then they should refund your money not credit.

lagoonhaze · 09/05/2012 07:55

I just knew this would be sports direct!

Hate the shop but DP and DS force me in their. Rubbish staff giving you very little time to try on trainers before they want to put them away. Sales assistant looking at watch - have you finished yet. Me; no and I'm not rushing cos you don't give refunds!

kiwijesta · 09/05/2012 08:36

Office shoes also do this, I bought some trainers then found a nicer pair before I wore them, luckily DH has the same sized feet as me and he kept them.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2012 08:44

I work in a shop which only offers an exchange if the item is not faulty, and people get so irate, (wrongly) quoting the sale of goods act, threatening to call the police, trading standards Confused

fuckbucket · 09/05/2012 08:52

Re the charity shop thing, one of my favourites has no changing room, so if you like something but aren't sure about the fit, you have to buy it, try it on elsewhere, and take it back if it doesn't suit. But they've streamlined the refund system because of this and it isn't a problem.

anniewoo · 09/05/2012 15:11

We know what to do... Boycott shops that don't give refunds. I always check cos I've been caught out before. Hopefully they'll get the message ,if , when purchasing you ask ' do you give refunds?' if they reply no then say 'oh well in that case i'll leave it, thanks'

Ithinkitsjustme · 09/05/2012 15:14

The only bit of this that surprised me is that every time I go into Sports Direct they point this out verbally when I purchase anything. That has been the case in every store I have been in.

AmnesiaCustard · 09/05/2012 15:25

Lurk in Sports Direct by the till and when someone goes to buy something over the value of £40 offer to sell them the gift card for £39. And loudly proclaim why.
You may lose £1 but you might feel better.

thisoldgirl · 09/05/2012 16:29

BEWARE these gift cards expire after 6 months.

As I learnt to my cost when attempting to spend £95 from a previous credit in All Saints.

Could have cried. Will NEVER buy anything from them again.

duckdodgers · 09/05/2012 16:53

Your item was not fit for the purpose so you should have been entitled to a refund

Dont be so ridiculous - at no point does Op say items werent fit for the purpose - just that they werent suitable, completely different things!

Existential · 09/05/2012 17:27

SportsDirect shops are hideous. SportsDirect.com is good.

If you bear spending with same company, suggest you buy things online where you're covered by distance selling regulations, i.e. you can get a refund if you just don't like it / not what you thought.

mumnosbest · 09/05/2012 17:32

No Wohmum I'm not that friend but will be if you want the gift card! lol
The T-shirts were fine just not the right material, apparently Nike make 'dry-fit' and 'fit-dry' (another story) and I got the wrong one.
I was told this gift card lasts 18 months but I'd better check.
I know there are things I can eventually spend it on but it's not a shop I usually go to (and wont again) so I feel like I'm spending money where I normally wouldn't.
I do like the idea of standing by the till and selling my card to someone (if I only had the nerve). Think I will definately be boycotting this store, due to bad customer service if nothing else.

So, about a month ago I brought three pairs of shoes for my children from Sports Direct Online. When they arrived, one of them was completely the wrong size to which I had ordered and the other was damaged so I decided to return all three shoes via distribution. I made sure that I noted that I wanted the money back onto my debit card on the return slip, however, they returned all the money back onto a store voucher. I don't usually shop in sports direct, it really was a one off and now I'm stuck with this stupid voucher. When I emailed customer service, they said that there is nothing they can do now as it is on a voucher and they can't return the voucher for money! When I called up, one of the representatives basically told me that it's my fault for returning all of the shoes. I can't believe this, it's absurd. Not all the shoes were a change of mind, I'm not at fault and now I'm out of pocket because I had to pay a TWO delivery charges. I had a few of cases like this with sports direct but I thought it would be different if I brought online... obviously not.
