To have a glass of wine before I start my antibiotics?

I am 34 weeks pregnant, and have a drink every few weeks ( or less in the early months). AIBU to have a glass tonight and start my antibiotics later or in the morning? Damn pregnancy UTI's!

What antibiotics are they, you may well be able to do both.

featherbag · 07/05/2012 20:13

Unless you've been prescribed metronidazole there's no reason why you can't have a glass of wine and the antibiotics!

Have never understood why people who are ill enough to need anti-biotics are so desperate to have alcohol.. Confused

BusinessTrills · 07/05/2012 20:24

YABU to "need" antibiotics and then put off taking them for a trivial reason.

YA also BU to just assume that all antibiotics mean that you can't have a glass of wine.

susiedaisy · 07/05/2012 20:25

Yabu start the AB and have wine next week

PorkyandBess · 07/05/2012 20:29

It's a bit of an urban myth that you can't drink on antibiotics.

It's only a few such as metronidazole or tinidazole (& some others) that you mustn't mix with alcohol.

MayaAngelCool · 07/05/2012 20:30

If you weren't preg I'd say go ahead. Since you are pregnant who knows whether the concoction will affect the baby? Does anyone know whether the two drugs will interact in a way that may be less than ideal for baby?

I wouldn't do it myself, and whoever mentioned the effect of alcohol on your bladder is probably right. Avoid it while you're unwell.

ChopstheScarletduck · 07/05/2012 20:32

I thought with abs the main problem is that you may get drunk quicker, though I suppose it then might affect your baby quicker.

Normally I'd say yanbu, but considering you are pg, I'd give it a miss and say yabu.

EdlessAllenPoe · 07/05/2012 20:37

having watched QI, the reason was that people were told not to drink because the anti-bs were given to stop STDS (and drinking involved whoring of course!)

as you are not likely to be headed off to the knocking shop, i would think the anti-bs would still be effective.

however being a veteran of the mid-pg UTI i would say No booze whatsoever until the infection is gone, no sugary drinks either, no tea - just water. You want to give your immune system the best possible chance of clearing the bug - clear it out with some water and don't give your kidneys anything other than the easiest job to do.

and then have wine when you are better :)

McHappyPants2012 · 07/05/2012 20:43

Yabu the alchol won't do you any favours, finish the course then have a glass.

Alligatorpie · 07/05/2012 20:49

Decision made. I took one sip and spat it out.

Thanks for the reminder of how alcohol affects UTIs. But, I am drinking lots of water. It is 35c here and the air con in my classroom is broken. It has been a very long day!

I will enjoy a glass of good wine in six weeks!

sigh<

my first pregnancy put me off wine for years...and red wine particularly

I know it is nice. but it doesn't taste nice any more...

champagne has always been ok though...

sashh · 08/05/2012 03:42

what featherbag said. Antibiotics (other than metrodiazole AKA flagyl) do not interact with alcohol. Alcohol does not stop antibiotics working.

It is a myth.
